What's the last major roster shakeup to happen not over the summer or at the deadline? It would be pretty unprecedented.

Plenty of teams have fired the coach early, but I can't think of the last time they made significant, core-altering trades early.

In the NY Rangers organization? We started to hold out McDonagh like a month or two before the deadline I think. Leaguewide it's unusual- I think of the Joe Thornton and Marian Hossa- Dany heatley trades but those are going on 20 years ago now.

I think i accidentally quoted the lines instead of the Ruhwedel Hartford assignment. Haha

But to the lines point, also useless. Trade Vesey, Smith and Lindgren. Those aren't core-altering massive moves. Make changes and get younger players in here that want it more.

So what? I see a lot of good players at both positions listed as slow.

So he’s going to continue to lose speed and agility as he ages and he is already listed amongst McNabb, Martinez, Suter, Schenn, Cole, Savard, Hamonic, Brodie, etc. who are regarded as good largely because of what they accomplished earlier in their careers, before slowing down. He also is one of the smallest guys to be that slow, especially at a young age. Most of the guys I just mentioned are pretty large and play a physical game. Fox is a great player, but - if I were a betting man - we’ve already seen his peak. Is it a problem? No. Is it great that we’ve probably already wasted the peak of both Fox (turning 27) and Shesty (turning 29) and are now looking to rebuild/retool with them as potential centerpieces? Probably not.

At least for the Rangers, there's really no comparable in the cap era. Maybe trading Higgins and Kotalik for Prust and Jokinen? 2 underperformers that they expected more out of to clear cap space. Neither of those were core pieces the way the current players are though. There's just not many trades in general I could think of. Maybe Spooner for Strome or Del Zotto for Klein but again those are more players that fell out of favor.

They dont need to make a trade right now. They could get Trouba and Lindgren off the roster today if they wanted but Drury and Laviolette, like the players, are cowards.

Those were pretty marginal moves.

I can't think of a single trade in the NHL involving a core piece that happened before the new year.

They dont need to make a trade right now. They could get Trouba and Lindgren off the roster today if they wanted but Drury and Laviolette, like the players, are cowards.

I don't disagree, but realistically, the above is probably what our expectations should be.

The NHL is all about their norms and decorum.
