Imagine a left side of Dahlin, Sergachev, and Skjei for a decade. Come get some.
This would be incredible.

IF we are definitely dealing McDonagh, here is how the deadline has to go imo:

Nash for 1st round pick '18 + prospect + 2nd round '19

Grabner for 1st Round pick '18

Holden for 3rd round pick '18 or '19

Desharnais for 5th round pick '18 or '19

McDonagh to TBL for 1st round pick '18, Sergachev, 1st round pick '20, 2nd round pick '19

It may be a steep price for Tampa, but things to consider
  • Solidifies them as pretty much the team coming out of the East
  • Mac has a good contract with some term left so he is not just strictly a rental
  • Mac is also a guy who knows players in the room already, Callahan, Girardi, Stralman
  • They traded us an older Marty St. Louis for a comparable price tag
This would give us Four 1st round picks this year, One next year, and Two in 2020.

We could package Two of the 1st round picks to trade up to make sure we get Dahlin.

Next year's defense:

Skjei-Shattenkirk
Dahlin-Smith
Sergachev-ADA

I'm listening to Hockey Central at Noon and Brad Trevling in on saying that because so many teams feel like they are still in it there aren't that many sellers. He also says that many sellers won't even know they are sellers until, possibly, the last minute. He did say that the teams that have gotten out in front of it and are willing to sell early can pretty much ask for what they want.

What I am hearing is that the teams at the top who know they will be in the playoffs may buy early from these early sellers.

I don't think anyone is going to trade the Dahlen pick

Good news for us

In free agency, the Rangers sign:

Tyler Bozak
3 years @ $4m per season

Antoine Roussel
3 years @ $1.75m

Roster next season:

Kreider-Zib-Buch
Galchenyuk-Bozak-Kostin
Domi-Chytil-Lettieri
Martin-Andersson/Nieves-Roussel

Staal-ADA
Skjei-Shattenkirk
Graves-Pionk
Kampfer

Hank

This assumes none of the 1st rounders from 2018 are on the team

Love everything here except the Bozak piece. Just not a fan.

We are not getting sergachev. If that is the make-or-break part of the trade then it won't happen. He is crucial to winning a cup. Cheap, putting up points, good d. His cap allows them to stack the team the way they did. They'll go with green or Barrie or a cheaper option.

I'm expecting their 1st to be a non-issue. We probably get killorn or palat back. Then it's 2 prospects. The issue is which prospects. It's not going to be point or sergachev in any scenario. Gourdie is probably the pipe dream right now, the others are delusional.

We don't have to trade McD to Tampa. There will be other suitors.

The decision all but assures that Rick Nash and Michael Grabner, both with expiring contracts, will be dealt before the trade deadline. Defenseman and captain Ryan McDonagh, who recently sold an apartment he owned in Tribeca, would fit the label of a "familiar face" the team could lose, especially given that he is signed at a manageable cap hit ($4.7 million) through 2019.

What the heck is going on with the Rangers?

Did anyone see this? McDonagh sold his apartment not long ago?

I agree that McDonagh is worth Sergachev, this site overvalues prospects/young players to no end. A bonafide #1 D Captain who's been to the ECF 3 times, SCF once, has been teammates with a quarter of their roster, is just 28 and is on a great contract; is more valuable to them than a rookie who's never played an NHL playoff game and fell off a cliff in terms of production after the first 25 games of the season.

But no one is trading the Dahlin pick

I'd rather they pry Brannstrom from Vegas and use the other high picks to trade into Svechnikov/Zadina territory.

I just dont see teams willing to trade 1st rounders for rentals. Vegas is who they should target because they have prospects and tons of extra picks.

Nash for Brannstrom and a 2018 1st

Grabner to Toronto for a 2018 2nd and 2019 3rd

McDonagh for Roslovic and Vesalainen and a 2nd, or Sergachev and a 2nd.

Zucc to Boston for one of Bjork/Heinen/DeBrusk, one of Lauzon/Vaakanainen and a 3rd

What are the Rangers doing with a 35 year old player who last played in the NHL 5 years ago?
You can't ice an entire team of young kids. He has always been known as a good teammate, and has a connection with Buchnevich as well - could be good for Chytil and even Shestyorkin if he is around when Shesty comes over.

The truth is, if we plan for this rebuild to be anything but a waste of time and win anything it would be a lot more like:

??? - ??? - ???
Kreider - Zibs - Buch
Miller - Hayes - Chytil
Lettieri - Andersson - Fast w. Nieves/Carey as extras

??? - ???
Skjei - Shattenkirk
Staal - ADA

The whole point is that the team lacks top end talent. Now, is it realistic to find an entire top line and top pairing? No. But there are variables. Chytil May eventually be capable of being a top 6 C/W. If we find a better top line C and Chytil or Andersson can be a solid 2C, Zibanejad can shift to 1st or 2nd line RW. Buchnevich could potentially be a 1st line RW. We will need two solid top three defenders and we will need at least an elite first line talent and another strong top six capable forward. If we aim to fill in lesser holes we will still be the exact same mediocre product on the ice. Andersson won’t be a 4th line C long term, nor is Chytil likely to be a bottom six winger but the top 9 is log jammed if we truly want to bring in more talent, meaning 1 or 2 of Kreider/Miller/Hayes/Zibanejad eventually get moved as long as Chytil/Andersson don’t bust. It also depends on how high they reach and how quickly they reach it. We would get assets back for these guys obviously as well. There is a ton of moving pieces right now. Accurately projecting the lineup 18 months from now is almost impossible.
Kreider is a 1st line player throughout the league, Buchnevich is onn his way there, Miller - who will now have 3 straight seasons of 50+ points, is not a 3rd line player. Chytil and Andersson may be 3rd line players next year, but project for 2nd line+ players. Shattenkirk is a top pairing dman for me, it is my opinion and I really don't wanna go down that rabbit hole debate. We are also about to get multiple 1st round picks (I assume) with our own being in the top 10.

No, I disagree with your question mark areas. We do need top end talent, but not in the extreme way you portray it.

Why? They've always done it in the past

e: do you mean 1st round picks or former 1st round prospects

Future picks.

Most teams love this draft so scouts will beg GMs not to trade them.

It's common for scouts to stick around after a GM is fired, so there should be a small group of GMs who say screw it and go for a Cup. But I think the Hanzal and Duchene moves might make them think twice.

Tampa, Boston and Vegas can afford to lose a 1st. Blues just traded theirs for Schenn. Caps wont trade with the Rangers. Same with Pens who also traded theirs last year. Lou hates trading 1sts. Maybe Winnipeg would be willing but they know players arent too keen extending there or keeping them off a NTC list.

Vegas. That's who I target. New team but a GM who desperately wants a Cup
