I can never root for a lose. But man would a top end talent in the way of a high draft pick make that so much easier.

I also find myself rooting for teams like Florida, Montreal, Edmonton, Detroit and Vancouver to get points.

I have already accepted this season is going to be painful. I'd rather get it over with and snag a high pick so that next year, hopefully, won't need to be the same

He is handicapping Smih just like the rest of the team. Smith isn't the only one who fumbles pucks. Your boy McD does to. If one player is playing this bad then yea maybe its the player who is playing scared cause the coach will put him in detention, but its the entire team who looks like crap. That is on the coaching staff. When 20+ players look like crap, I blame AV. If it were up to you, I bet AV would be here next year to coach the team.

God, how else is AV handicapping Smith? Is he the one that’s making him fumble the puck and take all the stupid penalties? The line must be drawn somewhere.

I have to wonder if the rumors in regards to Tampa are a smokescreen to get the Bruins to up their offer. The Rangers should have a nice opportunity between Boston and Tampa. Boston would be more of a long-term home for McDonagh as they should have the cap space and need to re-sign him while Tampa would be looking to not only block their inter-divisional opponent from acquiring him but also bolstering their blue-line to the point of absurdity. Gorton should have other bidders, I'm sure, but those two teams seem to make the most sense and both have stocked systems.

Don’t forget Toronto who is also in that Division

Yeah I thought of them. I just don't see them as on the cusp like I do those other two teams.

They’re not as far ahead as the other two but it would certainly be helpful to them to see that their two division rivals don’t get a fantastic player who could also help them. And the fact that they are probably the one team out of those 3 who needs a D like McD the most.

This is very true, but looking at the core groups on all of those teams, Boston is in their prime, Tampa is in their prime, Toronto still has some growing to do. I wouldn't rule them out, but I also don't see the real needed push on their part. It may be more of a year or two from now

Dunno..next year they'll be paying marner and losing I've and bozak right? Year after nylander and Matthews get their big deals? Add to that what they are paying marleau...their window might be smaller unless they draft exceptionally well. It all depends on the cap and their prospects...I'm not as enamoured with the leads going forward as many others are...same with the oilers..they are now paying Mcjesus and draisaitl a metric ton...it hurts them to fill out their roster around those 2.

I think I would harken with that Inferno said a bit. When they signed Marleau it was in large part because they know that their cap space is going to be serverly hampered in the coming years when their big guys need deals. They have their eyes on a run. And even if they aren’t ready they are just another team with which to play off the other two.

The Draisaitl thing is why I think McD and Zucc for Draisaitl would be the deal I try and make if I’m JG. They get top pairing (maybe) defender and a top flight winger. We get our #1 center for the next decade.

The problem is that McD and Zucc aren't going to sign in Edm longterm. They aren't giving up Draisaitl for two years of McD and Zucc.

Why not. Doesn’t hurt to ask. Young team. Unbelievable talent level. New arena. Chance to win. At least ask!

9 Games to go to the deadline. Flames, Jets, Wild2x, Isles, Sens, Flyers, Habs, Wings.

Miraculously, this team is still only 3 points out of a wildcard. Apparently nobody wants it bad enough.

They are currently 9th worst in the league by record, qualifying for the lottery pick. At this rate, I expect them to start winning a few games. Maybe after the big moves are made. I don't think they will finish in the bottom 5. Not even sure they will finish as a lottery team. Its funny...This team isn't even good at sucking!

All non playoff teams are lottery teams. There is no way in hell this team is making the playoffs. Hank looks completely burned out and he was the only reason they have won games this season.

Did I spell phoenix wrong? lol mythical creature that rises from burning ashes that has incredible power.
It was a joke about the team that plays in Phoenix (Glendale actually), and then a second joke about Harry Potter

Hank is definitely burned out. Seeing his face on the Bench was very telling.

I just think that there really aren't any teams above them or around them that are truly better. Safe to say, they are very close to Rockbottom right now. Only way to go is up. For the posters that want to see them throw in the towel and lose every game. I just don't see that happening.

did smith have a diffrent coach his 30 games as a ranger last year? when he played well...i am not saying av isnt an issue but when do we start putting blame on the players for continuing to make the same mistakes over and over i dont care who the coach is hes not on the ice making decisions for them

I think some of the teams won't 'sell' as much as the Rangers will that are around them which could play a role

Would anyone consider Galchenyuk + MON 2nd for Hayes? The reason I ask is because I think the Rangers should have the cap space and ability to sing one of Backlund/Bozak/Stastny in the off-season and if that's the case, one of those guys can easily replace Hayes' minutes. It would allow for them to bring in a young player who can play the wing and put up some points. Might be a good way to maximize an asset and replace via UFA

That's 6 games against teams in the hunt. The games against lottery teams are right before the tdl and trades may have been made at that point. I think it is unlikely they win more than 3.

It's fortunate, like last night, that the flames and jets get a peak at our players.

I think there's a growing philosophy that for a trade to have an impact, the incoming player needs as much time with the team as possible. We can eat salary and grabner is cheap. I'm hoping trades go down sooner than later.

Yes, I would do that.

Hayes has improved his well-rounded game this year but I still don't believe his skillset fits with the rest of the team, or the vision of how Gorton wants the team constructed. Furthermore, we should hopefully be flush down the middle with Zib, Chytil, Andersson.

Galchenyuk shoots left and seems to be LW. Kovalchuk is a RW for what it is worth.

Smith was better in Detroit at times, he was better in the playoff for the Rangers, he is still a 3rd pair D who can, at times when he is playing well, take a 2nd pair shift.

The stats that extrapolated that he could be a full time 2nd pair defender were based on him playing either with Green or behind Green, which they tried for a while, As well as, depending on which side he was placed, he was behind Kronwall, Dekeyser Ericsson Quincey, Marchenko. That was taken by many to indicate Detroit was not deploying him correctly, yet they gave him chances at pretty much every pair, with pretty much every other defender, on both sides of the ice, and he was never able to run with it consistently enough for him to play above those guys all the time.

I watched much of it, I have a family member who is a Detroit fan so I catch a fair amount of their games, not religiously or anything, he always had some promising stuff, but it always ended up being fleeting and it was largely dependent on who he was playing with.

For those who would like to read about it.

Detroit Red Wings Trade Bait: Brendan Smith

Why Brendan Smith Really Is That Damn Good

Red Wings make smart choice by dealing Smith

I expect should the Rangers keep him, he will be better next season, but I do not expect him to evolve into all that much more than something between what he is now versus what he was on Detroit, yet there could be times that he plays like he did in the playoffs.
