But how much of that production is because of Matthews?

Gotta be honest with you, that's a concern for me.

I think Nylander is a talented player, and would have success outside of Toronto.

However, we might need to qualify success with some context.

For starters, what's the cost? In other words, are we paying a higher price for a player (both via trade and via contract) based on how he'd perform in Toronto or here?

That leads directly into the second question --- can we provide him a similar environment to Toronto where he'd be likely to be as successful?

Make no mistake, the cost of Nylander would be high. And while I personally don't think there's a match with Toronto for this type of deal, my bigger concern would whether or not this team, as constructed after a potential trade with Toronto, would be in a position to capitalize on its new, high-cost acquisition.

Nylander is tempting but the assets to get him would probably be a little too much for comfort. don't mind paying him. No way Hayes isn't traded in my opinion.

Yeah Jost isn't coming back unless Hayes is extended. Even then I doubt it. Not that I'm a huge Jost fan but he is considered a high end prospect by most. Not sure Hayes gets that kind of player back.
Yeah, he’s been really solid but hasn’t really hit that scoring level that many thought he would after crushing it in Penticon. I think he’s probably a LW long-term and agree that he’d require an extended Hayes.

Another interesting team could be Vegas, especially with the Statsny injury. They’re going to need another C moving forward if they want to be competitive next season. It would take some interesting maneuvering to sign him long-term, but they’ll have a ton of salary coming off the books after next season.

I think the only reason why Jost is a possibility is desperation.

Colorado has a loaded top line but not much after that.

I'd package Zucc and Hayes and see what we could pry out of there.

What can we add to Hayes to get Makar from them? That’s the real question.

It would be too much. They hold him in extremely high regard.

I do like the idea of Hayes to Colorado though. Feel like he’s going to be a popular target for a lot of teams.

Think this is more about conditioning than preference. He may come up after a week or two in Hartford.
Probably, but they could have put him on a conditioning loan instead of regular waivers if that was the case.

Though I'm not sure if conditioning loans remove him from NYR's cap. That could be the only reasoning you would choose regular waivers over conditioning loan.

Hayes is strictly a rental right now. After the New Year though, teams interested can talk extension.

That’s when Gorton moves him, imo.

One other thing to consider: Hayes is on a 1-year extension, meaning the team holding his rights can't negotiate a new extension before January 1st. That limits the options for now

This came up on the trade board and we’ve been talking about it on HFavs, but what about Kerfoot + COL 1st + 2nd (or Timmins) for Zibby?

Not necessarily right now, but if you’re season doesn’t go surprisingly well, maybe sometime after the holidays? That time frame would let Timmins get back onto the ice for your scouts and would still giving us enough time to fully integrate Zibby before the postseason.

I'd be really surprised if Zibanejad wasn't a player that Gorton requires an overpayment for.

Right, I was looking at his ELC age for some reason. 16 months.

Still, if Kerfoot shows that last year wasn't a fluke, it's really not so amazingly far off.

I don't see it.

Zibanejad is a legitimate top 2 line center. Kerfoot looks like an undersized tweener.

Its going to take more than that, a late first and a 2nd (or a B/B+ Prospect, I like Timmins but he isn't a major needle mover.) Zibanejad is locked up for multiple years at a fair price.

I'd expect that kind of return for Hayes.
