I agree I dont understand waiving Beleskey over McLeod. I really dont.

Also, my interest in Nylander is growing by the day.

Probably want Beleskey to get in some game action before challenging for a spot.
Could've used a conditioning stint for that.

I'm thinking they try to get "lucky" and see if someone bites on his contract. It's a little disappointing. I think Belesky was on his way to winning a spot before he got hurt. And obviously, would like to see him on the NHL roster over McLeod.

Think we'll know more about how the team values him if he clears.

When he clears. Beleskey is owed $3.9m this year AND next. Nobody is taking that contract unless it’s a dump to trade for something else.

He's 50% retained at roughly $1.9m

Seems like a waste of cap space to me. Yeah, I think cap space won't eventually be a factor for the Rangers this season, can't think of a compelling reason to be reckless with it in this case.

Maybe he should actually show that he deserves more first?

After returning from being a healthy scratch Namestnikov definitely earned himself a regular spot in the line-up and, at this point, a chance to get ice-time with more talented linemates.

You’re right, totally forgot. Still don’t see him getting claimed at $1.9m given his struggles in Boston.
I don't know. 1.9 is very manageable, especially considering you can bury roughly 50% of that cap hit in the minors. If he doesn't work, you're left with less than a million in dead space.

TBH, McLeod has been "fine" when he's in the lineup and especially coming off of injury it would be very surprising if Beleskey can brings more. Let Beleskey get into playing condition and show what he can do with Hartford and then think about swapping him with McLeod. Plus, that "lucky" thing that @silverfish mentioned above.

Having trouble understanding. I think what you're saying is you don't see cap being an issue for the team this year, but why waste the $ on this just in case? Which I can agree with. Let me know if I've misunderstood.

I think that cap space won't ultimately be an issue for the team, but they should still preserve it wherever they can, for many reasons.

In this case, it seems to me that waiving him or sending him down on a conditioning stint have all the same pluses and minuses, except one: one will count against the cap (and require a roster spot) and one won't. There is the risk that he will get claimed but I don't see that as (1) remotely likely or (2) a negative outcome.

No one is biting on Belesky even if it's just 1.9 cap commitment. It's that extra year next year. If his deal was expiring, I could see a taker.

Beleskey makes $2m in real salary this season and $1.5m next year. Average $1.75m in real money and he has had ~10% paid as we are ~10% of the way into the season so that would be ~$200,000 of the $2m already paid. ~$1.8m left this year, $1.5m next year.

That's not a horrible deal for a team looking for some edge and to take on a veteran forward who may be able to return something at this or next years deadline. Especially if he puts up 8-10g and provides some tenacity and aggressiveness on a lower line.

I thought Belesky looked decent in pre-season until his injury.
And hopefully he continues that in Hartford.

If he were a free agent, would you consider giving over $3 million over a two year contract to a guy coming off 12 points in 35 AHL games?

If you love "tough" guys, yeah. He is one of the few that knows how to actually play hockey.

We can retain also correct? Reduce that cap hit further. I don't think he's part of a solution for us... just hoping to get another asset for him this yr or next.

San Jose gave up a 7th for 14 games of Eric Fehr after a long stint in the AHL. That's a comparable. The bigger factor is the commitment next year and the fact it's still October. There will be a dozen or so Beleskey's available at the deadline. No one is ravaged by injuries on their 4th. Teams won't let that much cap accrue for that level of player. Ask again in February and there will be a taker.

Nah, he'll be a useful player to have around after the TDL when the team's depth is completely gutted.
