You know what I’ve never fully understood? Why do GMs who are looking to buy wait until the deadline?

Ok, yeah sometimes it’s for cap reasons. But if I were a GM and had the space, I’d make a strong play for a player well earlier than that. Why? Because it would give my new acquisition more time to adjust and ingrain himself into the team.

Learn the lesson from Shattenkirk last year. Or MSL the year he came to the Rangers.

Usually because the line between buyers and sellers doesn't materialize until the two weeks heading into the deadline. A lot of teams fancy themselves in playoff contention right up until the end of the year. Once teams declare their intentions, then it takes a number of days to figure out the market and hammer out a deal.

Part of the reason I think the Rangers are in a good position this year is because both conferences have pretty tight battles going on for the wildcard spots. Like Bobby Mac said, they have two of the top three rental assets on the market in Nash and Grabner, plus some decent depth guys as well. I think the McDonagh and/or Zucc trades will wait until after the season unless teams really decide they want to try and separate themselves from the pack by adding either of them.

Stepan, younger and a center, had/has incredibly more value than Zucc.

Zucc has also played like crap this year. Teams are not trading for what he was but what he is.

Regardless, you are not even in the same stratosphere if you think you are getting more for Zucc than what you did for Stepan

I don't know that this is true.

Stepan's contract and pending NMC with out a doubt hurt his value. Zucc's contract (especially if the Rangers retain) is much more appealing to contending teams.

If you figure that Stepan's value was a 1st and DeAngelo with Raantaa being the difference between picking in the 20's and the top 10, then I don't see why Zucc doesn't return a 1st and a good prospect or a very good prospect and a 2nd.

This is assuming the market doesn't change. As it stands right now Zucc would be one of the, if not the best forward available. If that holds, someone will pony up for him.

Jesus no. We already have the reputation and rightfully so of the softest team in hockey. Now we trade away 2 American kids and one being Vesey who actually plays tough for 3Euros?

Tampa Bay would be a team I’m sure would be interested. They just acquired Sergachev for Drouin. McDonagh at half cap hit for Sergachev +. The Rangers traded Duclair + 1st + 2nd + Moore for Yankees who is not McDonagh. Duclair had broken in to the NHL that same season and appeared to be on the cusp of being a true high end winger. That’s a deal Gorton would be looking for.

Both. They need both. Why is this always so difficult?

I agree, but toughness should not come before considering the overall ability of the hockey players. It should be grouped into the same list of considerations like L-R shooting, age, size, skating, special teams ability, things that do make a difference towards the team on the whole, but shouldn't be how the team is deciding which players to acquire and which players not to acquire.

To NY Rangers:
Draisaitl
Kailer Yamamoto

To Edmonton:
R. McDonagh
C. Kreider

We get our franchise center and a speedy prospect, they get a bonafide #1D and their dream huge fast winger to play with McDavid. It's well known that they want Kreider and that they're trying to build a team to contend next year.

---

To NY Rangers:
M. Zuccarello

To Dallas:
D. Gurianov
V. Nichushkin

I think Zucc would be a great fit in Dallas and their window is wide open and they should go for it. Gurianov is a great Russian prospect to go along with Buch and Nichushkin could be our future Nash replacement.

---

To NY Rangers:
N. Hanifin

To Carolina:
K. Hayes
J. Miller

Carolina is so strong on LD's and has abysmal offense

---

Sign E. Kane

Had a great season, would fit well with our speedy style and he's someone who I think would thrive in a major city and a huge market. He seemed miserable in Winnipeg & Buffalo. I think NYC would rejuvenate his career

Kane - Draisaitl - Buchnevich
Nash - Zibanejad - Nichushkin
Guryanov - Chytil - Yamamoto
Grabner - Andersson - Fast

Hanifin - Shattenkirk
Skjei - DeAngelo
Graves - Pionk

Lundqvist
Shestyorkin (once he comes)

I can get on board with that sentiment.

No reason to license Kreider imo, he and Buch and zib are a great line that is more than the sum of their parts.

Yamamoto worries me a bit because he’s having a pretty bad post draft year so far.

I don’t think Zucc gets anymore than what we paid for Eric staal.

If Gorton trades Zucc for 2nd's that an epic fail. 60pt producer, leader, most well liked Ranger in arguably a decade, affordable contract...Wouldn't make any sense.

If the only offers were E Stall return Rangers shouldn't move him. Doesn't make sense to.

Return would likely be a 1st and a 2nd or a 1st and a prospect.

Even more. A 1st, 2nd and 3rd, two 1sts and a 5th, or a 1st and blue chip.

JEE is a lot tougher than Vesey but in principle I agree with you for sure. However — must we fix the toughness problem with the McD trade? By all accounts Gorton is looking to make a couple of moves. McD is our most valuable asset. Secure a potential top offensive asset (Kaprizov/Mittlestad/Puljujarvi) with him and get character in some of the other moves.

One thing, someone noted that Brooks sources had Gorton looking for young prospects as much as for picks.

We need to get this:

Why is this info leaked to Brooks? It’s very simple — Gorton want to send the message out there. Shake things up, see what he can push a certain group of teams to offer for McD and co.

Why does it mention that we want young prospects as much as we want picks? Look the most interested teams at the deadline will surely be teams looking to win now. They have late picks in the draft.

For a while there have been a concept of requesting non specific assets in trades, like “a 1st, plus a prospect plus ...”.

Awful return for McD. He isn’t a rental. He is an under 30 No 1 D with term left that is really really good in the POs and have awesome attitude. You do not in any way want a bunch of insecure assets for him, you want a prospect who you know who it is or a top pick guaranteeing you an exlcusive kid from a smaller group.

Trading Zucc and McD in packages thats only picks is taking a huge gamble on the future of the whole organization. If our picks turn out to be McIlrath, what then? "worth the gamble"?

McD for a pick is at the very very best going to be a level trade. The only thing tbe Rangers going for is McD's advanced age of 29, near retirement. Rumours says he wants kids to get off his lawn.

Zucc has been this teams leading scorer 3 out of 4 past seasons, is way ahead this season, and still gets shit on daily, despite being on course for his most productive season to date. He's worth more than a couple seconds like someone suggest, jesus christ.

If we're trading these players, it needs to be for a NHL ready bluechip prospect with minimal risk of falling through. Or better yet, as part of a package for someone whos actually going to improve the team immediately.

What teams would be the most interested in McD? Dallas, Winnipeg, Boston, Tampa and Toronto? What should the Rangers be looking for using the young NHL player or NHL ready prospect formula?
  • Jets: Connor +
  • Dallas: Heiskanen
  • Toronto: Marner +
  • Tampa: Sergachev +
  • Boston: DeBrusk ++
