This is also a giant screaming problem as Florida is fairly slow and just wants to get it deep anyway and the Rangers would slowly back in and let them carry the puck to the tops of the circles.

That's a tactical issue and entirely the coaching staffs fault.

As an organization they never seem to ask themselves "Wow this thing is really hard for us to deal with. What if we did THAT to other teams!" Very reactive, not very proactive tactically.
eh..........it's hard when traffic cones like Trouba and Lindgren literally can't take space because of their shite skating.

Maybe you're unaware but Colleen Cavanagh is a solid all around professor but you can't discount Stephen Blacklow. He may not be the prototypical professor but brings the intangibles you need to excel at this level.
watch out for Colleen's elbows though

I mean, the quickest way for this team to get to that next level would be Kakko making a Lafreniere-like jump.

Laviollette, Muse, and Peca did wonders for Laf this year. If they can work their magic on Kakko watch out.
A coach can only focus on so much. Laviolette did a wonderful job turning this team around, and he unleashed the 2nd line and especially Laf. His next project (should Drury still hold on to these guys) is to get more out of Mika and Kakko. And of course a full season with Chytil. And make Rempe a regular 4th liner.

The only way Kakko could have a success is if we transition from a rush team to keep the puck below the dots team, which I can’t see happening with tofu crew and the boys.

Only other way he would is if he had space on the Pp but he’s nowhere close to bein given that shot.

I don’t see any miracles like what happened with laf. He doesn’t have the speed to play on rush team in the nhl

You are implying that

- Kakko has always been this slow. False, he was pretty fast before the draft (I wouldn't say it was a specific strenght but he beat NHL defenders in the World Championships). Growing and getting bigger has taken a serious toll on his speed.

- That skating isn't something that can be improved. Also false, you can do things to improve it. I just hope Kakko really realizes that what he has done previously hasn't worked. He did imply in his exit interview that his speed is his biggest issue now, so let's hope. Hit the gym less, lose some muscle (=weight), and figure out a new skating program. Change your skating coach if you have to, call up Barkov and ask what he did. Barkov drastically changed his skating over the course of one summer when he was 22. Kakko is now 23. It's absolutely not too late to do stuff about it.

Rangers need their version of Ekholm to play with Fox. He has formed arguably the best pairing in the league with Bouchard. Big, good skater, extremely sound defensively but has offensive capabilities as well.

I mean, Vancouver got Hronek and paired him with Hughes and they were one of the best pairs in the NHL as well. Hronek isn't even that big

The bottom line is the Rangers just need someone to play with Fox that does more than bleed when they're checked face first into the boards 10 times per game

I think that pair is a bit overrated but yeah it doesn’t necessarily have to be the elite of the elite. Just someone who isn’t a zero with the puck and isn’t a free zone entry.

I'm not saying we should have done this because Laf worked out so well, but Laf playing with Panarin & Trochek was incredibly helpful for his game growing.

Much of KK"s "failures" this year were due to his lack of performance with Mika and Kreider. The issue with that is, no one can succeed with those guys. It's repeatedly been an issue. I would rather see KK get a chance with quality players who aren't Mika and Kreider before we ship him out.

Theres room to have different lines with different styles within a team or a system. It's actually preferable rather than having a team that just plays one way.

With Kakko though, even on a cycle heavy team or line it's not going to really result in goals unless he (or someone else on his line) takes the puck to the paint. Hemming a team in their own end is cool but eventually it has to result in something.

I think some of the concerns we all have with Zibanejad at 5v5, right wrong or indifferent, would be helped by getting more d-men who can move the puck to him in space while he moving up the ice. Too many times I see him so low trying to be that 3rd defender or flip the puck out out of necessity.

I'm less concerned with the teams center ice play, although Goodrow should be an obvious candidate to move on from if it's possible, replaced by a good center, say Blueger for less money. Improving the defense, both in size and skating ability, is a key.

I'm thoroughly convinced that this team, as currently constructed, could beat the Panthers if you just substituted Matt Roy and Dylan Demelo for Jacob Trouba and Ryan Lindgren. Net/Net the cap hits will be around the same.

I mean when you look at the top pairings around the league... Bouchard-Ekholm, Hughes-Hroenik, Makar-Toews... The 2nd guy is usually pretty good. Not necessarely another #1, but a clear top-pairing guy.

Good players play better when they play with good players. So bite the bullet, and try to find Fox a good partner. Pesce?

Pesce is a RD. Skjei would be a good one but the Rangers have one already, it's Miller

Admittedly, didn't even check that. Frankly, have never really cared about putting an emphasis on handiness or which side someone prefers. If you are a winger or a defenceman, you should be able to play both sides, period. It shouldn't be that hard. Laf was a career LW until this season. Turned out all right (no pun intended).
