What about Alex Carrier?

Jones has to be in the lineup next year.
honestly not sure he's going to be because of his size and the Rangers won't want to keep running out a relatively small defense

but they should trade him and not just make him sit around as the 7th D in that case

I hope this isn't a trade for a trade... i really don't want to trade kakko just to move up 9 spots in THIS draft. It's slightly unusual for trades like this to happen before the draft. These usually happen because there's a player the team is targetting and isn't sure they can get at their spot. and that's usually something you pull off as you see how the board is shaking out. so, this feels like it COULD be a deal for a deal regardless of Kakko. But if Kakko's value is 9 spots in a draft like this, it kinda seems pretty terrible.

It absolutely is terrible.

To me the only way moving Kakko to trade up a few spots in R1 makes sense is if his camp is forcing the issue.

A team trying to contend shouldn’t be trading NHLers to move up a few spots at the back end of R1.
Yep, if Kakko is being traded to move up a few spots then someone else better be coming back to the Rangers as well

but even then that's a big old meh

Yeah, I don't think they'll be able to get a suitable replacement for him at $2.4M that makes trading up in the first round worth it. It's why I've said that finding a player that 's in a similar situation as him that needs a change of scenery is a better idea for a swap. Depending on who those players are, I'd honestly rather just keep him and let him hopefully have a rebound year. We know what his floor is, and that's still a useful player on a contending team.

I think Detroit outbids us handily - unless his number is drastically lowered market-wide

I think he’d rather go to a contender. I can see the Wings missing the playoffs again this year. Their defense is suspect and goaltending isnt as good as playoff teams

EF was on McAfee's show. 8 years/$64M for Guentzel. He would take that deal from Carolina. It seems Carolina will give it to him. The 8th year. $64M is over $9M AAV from another team in free agency over 7 years. EF said 8 years for Reinhart in FLA. $9.5M-$10M AAV.

I think if he really wanted out desperately, he would not have signed the deal. The deal might make it easier to move him, but also retains the possibility of him starting next season with the Rangers. I would have to think both parties are OK with that possibility.

Not really sure what Carolina is doing. Signing Guentzel and letting all their depth walk. Their new Rocket scientist GM must know something I dont. Didnt work well for the Lions and Matt patricia.
