Roster Building Thread - Part XI (Off-season edition)

He’s better than Kravtsov, the player the Rangers took over the guy I wanted at the 2018 draft. 🤬
 
Rangers getting Zegras would be a great get.

Fans whine about young players not producing and then scoff at a 23 year old that scored 60+ points back to back as a 20 and 21 year old on a terrible Ducks team.

He has elite hands. He never had the kind of talent around him that the Rangers have.

The Michigan comments are snarky. He has elite level skill. Far higher level than Kakko and Chytil and it's not close.

That all sounds great, and then you bury him to the 3rd line with no special teams time with Chytil and Edström/Cuylle. I guess he could score 35 points and a Michigan though.

If you get him, you better f***ing staple him to the top-6 and powerplay. And that means more PP time than Lafreniere BTW, so enjoy that one. Otherwise, why bother?

He also has an attitude and cockiness. He’s pretty slight physically but attitude can make up for a lot. I can see him going really hard for his hometown team. I’m on board assuming the players moved out to make room are some combination of Trouba/Lindgren/Kakko/prospects (not Gabe)/picks

Skjei would instantly be our 2nd best defenseman and he doesn't miss time. He's a great skater and can move the puck, he's also got the size/reach.

Rangers need to completely revamp the D core that can't move the puck. Our D are incapable of basic break outs.

Rangers should never have traded Skjei to begin with.

Skjei is not someone I sign at 30 years old to what will likely be a 7 year deal. No thanks.

He’s a product of Carolina playing him a ton of minutes in a structure that fits his playing style. He doesn’t need to think, he just attacks and plays man on man defense. That’s not most teams and his downfall in NY was his brain farts.

He would be the RW on Mika and Kreider's line.

Laf and Zegras on the PP together would be ridiculous. Rangers haven't had that kind of young talent since 92.

KK was also the RW on Mika and Kreiders line. Like 8 other players before him. 9th being Butch, who actually worked.

Like I said, I'm not totally against the prospect of getting Zegras. I'm scared of what they would pay to get him, and how they would deploy him. That is all.

Just to point out the flaw in that logic. Per money puck

Kakko in 22-23 played in 82 games, and put up 36 pts at 5v5. 12.5 expected goals (10 total)
Zegras in 22-23 played in 81 games, put up 41 points at 5v5. 11 expected goals (16 total)

kakko at 1.72 points per 60
Zegras at 1.98 points per 60

Zegras is a gifted offensive player. Dynamic and fluid.
He's also absolutely terrible defensively

Kakko has some solid offensive talent, but he is very good defensively.

I dont care about the michigan. I care that we're comparing two players as if one is absolutely head and shoulders better, but the gap isn't that big, and for a team that just got pushed around in the playoffs, moving a 6'2 power forward who hasn't finished developing, for a 6'0 skilled forward who also hasn't finished developing. Seems really backwards.

Skjei is a perfect fit for the kind of defenseman the Rangers need.

He was a young player when the Rangers had him and they gave up on him way too soon. It would be like trading Miller right now.

Again, he doesn't miss time. He's durable. He hasn't slowed down. He has snarl, he has skill, he can skate, he can move the puck, he's got reach and size.

Unless they can trade for similar players that are younger, I don't see better options.

I wouldn't give him a NMC. Being 30 isn't an athlete's death sentence the way it used to be.

Matt Roy is a year younger and a better player. He’s the guy I’m hoping they sign and he will be less expensive.

Isnt Skjei the best defensemen available? Dude is going to rightfully ask for a ton of money. I'm not sure we want that contract.

Skjei got us schneider. 1:1 thats a move I absolutely make over and over and over again.
I dont care about moving him too early, we got an unprotected (better of two) first round picks.
That was an insane swing. And then covid shut the league down.
Had we won that round vs carolina, that unprotected first would've been 1st overall, and would've been Laf.

Zegras' skill level is far above Kakko. I don't care if Zegras isn't as good defensively. Defense can be taught. His level of talent can't be. He's also never been on a team like the Rangers. The Ducks are a mess and he carried them offensively for two years and then got hurt.

Kakko couldn't stick in the top 6 because his offensive talent isn't high enough. He's a 3rd/4th line defensive specialist, that can be filled via free agency or trade for depth.

Players with Zegras' talent level and age don't get traded often. If the Rangers can get Zegras it would be a no brainer. Especially if they don't give up much to do it.

Yea I don't get this narrative about him, I think it's mostly people see a few highlights of him pulling off Michigans and think he's a p***y who's afraid of contact. He carries the puck up and challenges defenders one on one, goes right to the net; stuff the much bigger Kakko is extremely timid doing. Even just talking pure grit and attitude, Zegras has had multiple misconducts in his career and when angry can be pretty feisty.
Anyone try telling me you could see Kakko ever doing this:

If Panarin couldn't stick next to Zibanejad and Kreider, is the issue talent or the way K+Z play?
