Mikkola is pretty ass too tbh. Easily the worst defender on that Florida team and that was a group that included Kulikov who is the quintessential what ever journeyman bottom pair/depth defenseman that gets traded at every deadline.

They should have cashed in on Lindgren 2 years ago though. That was a change that should have been made after the Tampa series, as valiant as Lindgren's efforts were during that run.
I was saying this AT LEAST 2 yrs ago
but do peop listen to bern?
often no!
and do they later regret it?
often yes!!

Not for nothing but Panarin and Mika scored at a PPG pace in the playoffs. I don't think their overall play was very good but I feel like the goalposts move for these guys every year, it will obviously never be enough until they win the Cup, which I accept.

I also dont think this is the time to lose faith in the core. We have a really good team, they need to augment their top guys. Can we play Mika on a line with 2 top players? Can we have a 3rd line that scores more than 3 goals in 16 games? Can we play our Norris winning defenseman with a guy capable of playing top pair minutes? These are easily correctable problems if the team has loyalty to the guys who actually win us games, instead of the guys who we want to amount to something. The window is wide open now, but some would let it pass waiting for Chytil/Kakko to happen.
Well, considering Pan scored at 1.5 PPG all season, thats a 33% drop off... he was no more than okay. He did NOT live up to his cap hit.
Mika was very good against Wash, meh against Carolina, and invisible, except for glaring errors, against Florida. I don't care if he paced for 5PPG all told, he completely disappeared halfway through the second round. NOT GOOD ENOUGH.
This is not to say they can't BOTH be better next year... or that they will not be exactly the same or worse next year. Not getting any younger...

I'm warming to the idea of Kane. It all depends on the cap hit and contract of course but in terms of a fit on that 2nd line, it makes some sense.

The #1 and #2 priority needs to be the defense however and then just sign Dakota Joshua. If the top-6 is going to be:

Panarin-Trochek-Lafreniere
Kreider-Zibanejad-Kane

Then I expect the bottom-6 to not only be able to create some offense but also bang bodies. Edstrom and Cuylle are good examples. Add Joshua and obviously Chytil is the 3rd line center. Find a couple of guys who play with pace but are a PIA. Berard would be one for me and then find another one.

I met Gilles Villemure’s daughter at a Ranger game in Las Vegas. She was wearing her fathers jersey from one of the jersey retirement games ( think it was Hadfield) she was very surprised when I told her I had seen her Dad play for the Long Island Ducks.
The woman who wore the Villemure jersey to the Winter Classic was too young to be his daughter -- maybe another relative.

A RW is 33% of a top line. Salary doesn't make a player. How many top 8 teams are playing with KK or Ros caliber producer as their top RW?

KK played on that Mika line as well as with Bread in the past. If he was playing as a top six RW he would never have been moved down. Its hard to compare KK top top 6 players coming off last season so its almost an apples and oranges discussion. Im not happy with CK and Mika vs Florida but if you want to bring up KK he has been a guy that disappears in the playoffs to the point where he has been a healthy scratch by two different coaches.

In regard to a trade there may be a guy that Drury really likes in the draft and he may be able to use that $2.4 elsewhere. Or maybe KK and the team agree that he could use a trade to start over? Im not inside so I can only speculate.
Disagree with the bolded. The LINE wasn't working, and we refuse to break up 20-93 so the RW was moved off it... just like EVERY wing they tried there in the last 3 years including Pan. If this was one season, or maybe even two seasons, we were talking about I could kind of agree with you. But it's been three f***ing years. Time to try each of them with two other linemates. Zib played like a 3rd liner at 5v5 all year let him be 3C at 5v5. Maybe he will ask for a trade if he can't play with Kreider and we give Laf some of his PP time. Or maybe it will make him elevate his 5v5 game.

Yeah I mean Im not defending their play in the playoffs because it wasnt good enough. What I am saying is, it's a waste of breath to talk about them being replaced in any way. But you mitigate their limitations by improving the team around them. Kakko and Chytil havent shown us they can be replied upon for depth scoring. I dont care about them "earning their cap hit" or whatever but moving on from them to better augment the core is a no brainer from my perspective.

He's not their top RW. Lafreniere is. And the worst second line wing on all the teams to make the second round of the playoffs in their last game was:

Holloway
Rodrigues
Marchment
Teravainen
Frederic
Joshua
Parise

So I'd say most of them.
KK is better than Machment? Teravainen?

Hollaway is a top 6 wing playing 11 minutes a game?

Frederic is a top 6 wing playing 13 minutes a game? What did KK do better this season?

Was KK better than Joshua this season? How so?

39 year old Parise played around 30 games and 12 minutes a game this season but yes KK was probably better than him. Did Nichuskin and Ratanen play RW this season?

McDavid with a 56% CF and 58% xGF against Florida

Panarin was 55% CF and 63% xGF. he showed up.

the big difference was the Oilers had 8 players over 50% xGF, the Rangers only had 2 (Panarin and Lafreniere)

Florida is just really good at shutting down top forwards. get Panarin some more defensemen who can move the damn puck, nobody can do it on their own.

Well the fly in the ointment is it's going to be hard to find players who will outperform KK and Chytil for the same money. That's why "earning your cap hit" matters. That's why we cant just make Trouba a 3rd pair D and get a "legit" 2nd or 1st pair to put in his old slot... we cant afford it cap wise.

What did KK's play on any line this season in the regular season or playoffs say he should be a top line RW? When KK played on the third line this season how many games did people come away saying OMG that guy is a top line winger he should be stapled in the top 6? When KK plays well I will be thrilled to be one of the first people to say so. I was very happy with his play/improvement 2 seasons ago. This season he was bad. It is not logical for us to pretend that KK played well this season and just played on the the wrong line imo.

salary doesn't make a player, but value does.

Kakko and Panarin don't fit. It's known and borne out by the numbers: worse together than they are separately.

Opposite is true for Zibanejad. Only difference is Z wasn't scoring while playing with Kakko and Kreider last year. if you recall, MZ and CK stunk. tilted the ice, created chances, just couldn't finish.

I reject that it was Kakkos fault.

Not interested in someone who chokes in the final. We've never seen Zib in the final
At least her performed every round up until then! Can’t say the same about Zib. Would be nice to buy low on Drai. I could see EDM moving him

Only because I just mentioned him but Colton gives us much more than Chytil does for ~4mil AAV. And I think Brett Berard can manage 20 points next year for half Kakko's cap hit. Id rather have small guys who play bigger than big guys who play small.

KK is being paid $2.4 mill because that is the value his current play calls for. If he improves his play his value/salary will increase.

No offense but when KK doesn't produce it is never his fault. It is always the GM, his coaches, and teammates fault. If only we signed another player from Finland he would be a annual 80 point scorer.

I do not like that it seems like I'm bashing KK. I just do not think its fair for some posters to blame everyone but KK for KK's play.

At the end of the season yes they were. Holloway was on the Draisaitl line. Parise on the Mittelstadt line. Frederic on the Marchand line. Most teams do not have six top six level forwards.
