The Tanev trade was good news for the Rangers and other buyers.

Vatrano/Henrique is a plan C or even D for me. Gourde/Eberle are A. I couldn’t tell you what plan B would be but I would exhaust other corners of the earth first before settling on Vatrano/Henrique. I much prefer Tarasenko to Vatrano. Even Duclair. Others. I dont like having to pay the price for the retention and term left for Frankie freakin Vatrano. Like him but no way.

That's going to cost big time.

I have trusted Drury to this point. Outside of the Buchnevich trade I have been fine with the moves made.
Nemeth was a bad signing and then he had to give away assets for Arizona to take him. He's had more good than bad but Buch and Nemeth transactions were woof.

Calgary was holding out for a first round pick or a better prospect that they ended up with.

Kevin wants a first round pick for every Flyers player.

Dallas did very well here. No first round pick. No Ty Dellandrea. No top prospects. 25% salary.

Is Drury paying attention?

Just wait until next Friday when the prices drop even more, there’s no rush here unless players start flying off the shelves, which doesn’t seem like it’s happening.

I do not have Gourde/Eberle costing us Kakko/Othmann/Perreault. So outside of those pieces i am all in. I like where this team is at. I like the depth with Edstrom and to a lesser extent Rempe. You then have Othmann churning along plus i expect one of Berard/Sykora to remain past this deadline.

The Nemeth signing and then trading does not bother me as much as it bothers others here.

I was thinking at least a 1st, 2nd, and either Berard/Sykora + Jones. Something like that, maybe more because there will have to be some retention as well.

Listen, you can think it's dumb, but all you are doing is coming up with your own sample size, forming a different conclusion, and then saying your projection is better. The chart is at least done with numbers.

I think you just don't like the conclusion.
The NHL standings also represent a chart done with numbers. The Rangers are at the top of that one. Kind of amazing which conclusion you prefer...

I can live with that package parameter. Would suck to lose one of Berard/Sykora but as I have said before there are only 12 forward spots. With the emergence of Edstrom, who is already here, and Othmann not far behind, there is maybe 1 spot available next year. That’s a maybe. Oh and throw Rempe into the mix. Jones does not have a future here. Great college career. Has potential to be an offensive defenseman in this league but he needs minutes for that to be determined.

Have to give to get.

I'm getting prepared to lose one of them. Just too many wingers and not enough spots available.

They may get sent back to the A at the deadline, but Edstrom and Rempe give me a lot of hope for next season and filling out this roster. Might even be able to sign another top 9 forward because of their deals (would rather see Othmann)

When you can go into an off-season and have a couple young guys that will fill roles, you have tons of possibilities. Edstrom on the PK will happen. It's a perfect fit.

This is what organizational depth looks like. I don't remember the last time they had plug and play young guys for the bottom 6, even in a limited role.

It is limited, but it looks good and passes the smell test. Neither look out of place.

Now, Suburban Phoenix. Then, Long Island
So the Devils got a 4th to retain 50% of the 50% the Flames retained, so Dallas got Tanev at 75% retained.
Don’t know if you’ve seen it but over on Twitter, the Coyotes have a calculator that shows the value of 3rd party retained dollars. You can project the pick you have to trade to have dollars held by a third team.

I swear, I couldn’t make this stuff up.

Only in Arizona.

So in the last two weeks here’s what we learned; a) the Rangers have solved their sandpaper problem internally. (Even if Edstrom and Rempe spend some time back in Hartford, they will be available as needed for the playoffs. b) The Rangers need an offensive boost. That could be either a RW to go with Mika and Kreider or a 3rd center. Right now, they are not scoring enough goals.

I’ll go back to something I said a couple of weeks ago…one relatively big splurge and one small move. Many, many options.

Stay tuned.

You also said that the relatively big one would be for beyond this year. Which is what I think we all want after spending so many 1sts on rentals.

What the Rangers haven’t learned: their biggest problem is their defensemen. If I am taking a big swing, that’s the part of the ice that I am aiming at, but I just doubt they see it that way

Dallas owes Calgary an extra pick if they reach the Cup finals. 3rd round pick. If they don't win three playoff rounds, it's nothing.

If Drury made this trade, a first round pick was ending up in this deal.

One of the two round picks became a first when the Rangers won two playoff rounds in the Copp trade. Did Copp do anything for the Rangers in the playoffs? He got hurt before the playoffs started. There wasn't one moment in the playoffs. Copp missed an empty net in game 5 against TB. That's the one moment. Winnipeg didn't even retain money. The Rangers didn't need them to retain but the Rangers gave up too much for a rental with zero retention.

Even now you hear Vince say the Rangers will make a similar deal to the Copp deal. The draft pick will elevate to a first round pick for the rental if they win two playoff rounds. How do you measure that player's impact on the team? So dumb. So Rangers.

All of these teams wanted Tanev. Dallas. Vancouver. Edmonton. Toronto. Colorado.

2nd round pick and some filler prospect for Tanev at 50%. A 4th round pick for Jersey to retain 25%.

Just wait until next Friday when the prices drop even more, there’s no rush here unless players start flying off the shelves, which doesn’t seem like it’s happening.
I fully expect Chris to make some stupid trade where the Rangers end up giving up a first round pick for a rental.
