Yeah Smith`s camp is awful. I know it`s preseason, but I`m worried for him unless he find a way to improve his game. I hope he is not injured or too busy with wedding plans, and too little time to prepare
for a new season. Hopefully Smith improve the next couple of games in regular season.
So he has a good playoffs and a bad preseason and even though the playoffs was a larger sample size we are already looking to ditch him?

Brilliant logic.

The Blues have some injury issues, just lost Fabbri for season, same knee injury. He may yet rebound, but not unreasonable he is now a question mark.
They are also thin at LD.

2 deals, possible to package...maybe.

Nash at 4m, DeSharnais and NYR 2019 1st for Fabbri and SLB 2018 1st and 2020 Blues 3rd.
explain: Blues going for it, but don't wanna go overboard
no Fabbri in any case, thereafter he is RFA --- if he can return to form.

upcoming draft is stocked. following one, I'm not sure.
swapping 1sts does not kill teams long term, but advantages NY with earlier pick likely higher, likely better
NY also gets cap relief
DD is not key for us given Boo immediately and L,A FC around the corner
they get a pivot along with a higher end 2 way W.
DD not worth a 3rd, but we are eating on Nash, and the third is pushed way down the road.

The other deal is something around a reduced Staal for Bouwmeester, who is UFA after not this upcoming season but next one and is IR right now w.5.4 cap hit, and is older than Staal.

Staal is a mess, but if partnered with a speedy RD, maybe he is a stop gap 3rd pair this year, bought out next

Like Fabbri, Bouw will stay on IR, costing only $.
Cap relief for NY.
Rangers add since Staal is carried on their active roster.
Some deal should be possible though.

Gorton deserves a lot of credit. The team added a lot of pieces and had a lot of turnover in the last few years. If Staal ends up bought out at the conclusion of this season, the longest-tenured Rangers are Lundqvist, McDonagh, and Zuccarello.

There's a new core coming through in Hayes, Miller, Skjei etc., and the team is rebuilt into more of an AV team. The defense looks better and more modern, and there looks to be a lot of promise in our prospects. This season is a bit of a sink or swim one. You want to see your new core take the next step.

As for Smith, he's what you want in a modern defensive d-man. He can skate and he has some offense to his game. Inconsistent, perhaps, but the talent is there. I'm not writing him off based on a bad pre-season. I can't when Staal and Holden are still here.

Look at where our pipeline was 2 or 3 seasons ago. We've managed to use that minimalism pretty effectively and churned out a few players, but now that we're in a better spot, the future is already looking a lot better with the higher-end talent in guys like Chytil and Andersson.

I was pretty young throughout the dark ages, but I remember enough. The last few years have been a lot of fun in comparison, and the future's looking better, too.

its much more likely that we move one of our young dmen in a deal for help at the deadline. moving smith and promoting one of those guys may not be the best play right now. ADA, pionk and graves are all in play especially if they develop and start to turn some heads. dmen have value. we have young dmen.

keeping brendan smith here seems like a no brainer. we was moved for picks and resigned to a decent cap friendly AAV. he's a much better player than many here believe.

Blues are in a tough spot with recent loss of Fabbri to re-torn ACL. Berglund, Steen also starting the season injured. Armstrong says they will explore options to replace his scoring. They have a glut of C prospects. I would explore Nash for Barbashev and a 2nd or 3rd round pick. Barbashev would be fine at 3C, could have 2C upside eventually

Smith’s Preseason play was not awful. He was more than fine. Showed his skating ability, jumped in the play, and was physical at times.

A lot of veterans who know they have a spot, which he absolutely does, do not go full blast during preseason. When the ganes count he will be ready to go.

And lets not forget one of those games he was paired with John “What is Defense?” Gilmour.

Finally a proposed trade with moving parts.

I still do not see Nash being moved.

I had Stastny on the list of potential deadline targets at the deadline a few weeks back. He is a free agent to be. I dont like the makeup of the Blues. But now Fabbri is out. And as you mentioned Steen and Berglund are banged up. This can go wrong fast for them.

id be surprised if Chytil is here more than the 9 games...kids got skill, but hes not ready for the NHL yet...especially in his own zone where he's closer to brutal than acceptable.

I was saying sending Anderson to Sweden is the best move. He is young. Let him grow his game more before facing NHL players. We are a young team. The people that act like we are a old team are misinformed.

I`ve notion that Kampfer is AV`s new pet - no doubts about that. Kampfer was just awful in a preseason game. @Gardner McKay I believe Smith will be replaced by one of our ELC guys within two years. It cost much less compare to his contract if our ECL Graves can improve the next two years and use him in Smith`s role. And that`s my reasoning, but, of course, I could be wrong as well.

Even for the new NHL I don't think we have a lot of defensive/traditional bottom six forwards. Carey isn't really that kind of player. But if you want one in the mix, maybe the decision's between Desjardins and Farnham - Farnham had a better camp IMO, but Desjardins has to have more skill, has much more NHL experience, can play center etc
