A lot of times, yes. But if 1/5th of your TOI is shorthanded, that's gonna happen anyways.

Also true and in most cases a blocked shot here is fine.

The problem is what happens 5v5. If he’s tops in the league in blocked shots with the minutes he’s getting that’s not really a good thing.

So glad all you guys can outcoach Lav. I don't know what I would do without this forum...
When multiple coaches resort to the same ideas, they blame it on some organizational disease, even though we had a recent change in organizational leadership, which these people bemoaned at the time (LOL!), because they can't fathom that maybe their ideas are nubs, case in point being that they preferred the kids on PP1, which is THE ULTIMATE scrabble face idea because it doesn't even make geometric sense.

There is not much of a correlation between blocked shots and amount of time playing defense - especially for forwards. Blocking shots is a conscious decision. A player like Panarin will be at the bottom of the league in blocked shots regardless of if he's on the ice for 50 CA/60 or 70 CA/60 because he chooses not to block shots.

Auston Matthews is 4th in 5v5 shots blocked. Nathan MacKinnon is 10th. Elias Pettersson is 14th. It's not because they're constantly hemmed in. It's because they choose to do so. Bonino leads the league in 5v5 blocks (for forwards) with 43. His linemate Cuylle has 6.

I haven't checked but I believe it's a bit different for defenseman just because by nature standing where they do they will get hit with a shot by accident much more often.

The same is really true for shots versus the amount of time playing offense once you remove the double counting effect of individual and team shots while on the ice. Guys who shoot, tend to shoot, regardless of all other factors.

When everyone is healthy the lines should look like with how players have been playing/producing:

Kreider - Zib - Wheeler
Panarin - Trocheck - Laff
Cuylle - Chytil - Kakko/Vesey (possible upgrade here if Lav has lost faith in Kakko)
Goodrow - Bonino - Vesey/Kakko

I think if we were going to make a pre-deadline trade it would have happened by now.

Drury is riding it out. Team is overperforming which buys us time. We're making the playoffs. That the roster isn't complete is something far more likely to be addressed at the deadline once we have accrued a little cap space.

I agree that there's no reason to make any changes to the roster right now. Kakko & Chytil will come back at some point. Othmann needs to get some games at some point to.

We need a top 4 D upgrade but im not naive enough to think Drury is going to trade Lindgren mid-season. Guys like Jon Merrill or Nick Seeler are probably the best we can realistically hope for under the cap constraints at the deadline. As I mentioned last night, pretty much the only way they can add a difference maker (outside of LTIRing Chytil for the regular season, which i doubt highly that they will do) is to use Kakko to add a real piece at forward.

Drury really can't do anything until they get some clarification on the Fil situation. He needs to know if he needs a 3rd center or just a depth piece.

You can totally give up on Kakko for perfectly reasonable reasons. If THREE coaching staffs in a row go from:

Gifted top 6/PP to start the season > Demoted to get him going > Tough Love > Try bumping him up again a few times > f*** this guy

Then it's his fault. 3 coaches with very, very not confusing things they like, such as "skate" and "be strong on your stick", and "go to the hard areas" and he still humps the boards then f*** him. Life goes on.
Sure. And you can hold off on giving up on Kakko for perfectly reasonable reasons as well...
Like he's still only 22 and he's already had a season where he put up 40 5v5 points while being excellent defensively, and realizing a 19 game bad start on the scoreboard, while maintaining his defensive play, isn't that f***ing catastrophic for a player that young.
