It's not Goodrow's fault. It's the GM. I don't understand why they didn't just buy him out. Two years of a small cap credit and a savings of 3.6 mil could have gone a long way.

Drury to his credit has done a good job cutting his losses with guys like Blais, Reaves, and Nemeth. Might be his best quality. I guess he thinks Goodrow is good?

He's a 4th line plug and is worth nowhere near his 3.6 mil salary especially with a flat cap. He's making more than Wheeler, Pitlick, Gus, Cuylle, combined. Saving 3.6 a year and getting a cap credit for the next 2 years seems like a no brainer to me and we could have used that money to fill some holes.

Mikkola wasn't a fit here. I enjoyed the fire that he played with but we desperately needed a defenseman who wasn't going to nuke the team's ability to get up ice.

They ended up signing a better fit and a better player for 825k. Now if they let HIM get away bc Goodrow is kept then thats something really worth getting pissed over.

They’ll do it this offseason I suspect

Why wait though? They lost a year of a cap credit because they didn't do it this year. Cap savings would have been 3.8 mil. He's just not worth that money to waste.
Because its not a pure 3.8m you have to replace him with someone.

Not sure if id break things up after 1 loss against a very good team on the road where they had a 2 goal lead

But - if they do - I def think they need to split the bromance and Vesey could be the one elevated. No offense to Cuylle dropping down.

Its also time to designate the correct line numbers. Breads line is not only line #1 on this team, its one of the best lines in the game right now.

I get it, Mika is the matchup line so therefore needs to be labeled #1C - but maybe start giving him some zone starts against weaker d pairings and see what happens. Wouldnt be against the Cuylle Mika Kakko line either.

Panarin Trocheck Laf
Vesey Mika Kakko
Kreider Goodrow Wheeler
Cuylle Bonino Pitlick
line 1 has been a problem all season. Its just that we've been winning so dont want to rock the boat. If we lose again tomorrow, Lav has to make some big changes to get some of these idiots going in the right direction.

I mean look at Jere Lehtinen. He was an extremely important player to a cup winning Dallas Stars team.

Yes the team has to answer for why they turned Kakko into a defensive winger instead of developing his offense further, but that does not mean Kakko is a useless player and can’t contribute in other ways.
Dear Mr. Kaapo Kakko,

We know you are capable of scoring 50 goals in 50 games but we would like you to stop shooting. We would like to win games without scoring goals. So we as the NYR organization are requesting that you only play defense. If you have the puck in the offensive end please do not do anything with it. If you score a goal by accident we will understand but please do your best not to score.

Thanks in advance,

Jeff Gorton
John Davidson
Chris Drury
David Quinn
Gerard Gallant
Peter Laviolette

Ok, so you could have replaced him with a considerably cheaper alternative. There were plenty of 4th liners who could have done the same for a fraction of the price with the current flat cap. We signed Gus and Wheeler for 800k each. Then use the savings to possibly upgrade RW or D depth. IMO it doesn't make sense to pay him 3.6 mil for what he brings to the table when every dollar matters.

The buyout is cheaper in both real dollars and cap hit, as well as 1 year shorter against the cap, if they wait until next summer vs last summer.
Yes, slightly, but who cares about that. We have a team now that can make some noise and we are paying 3.6 mil this year to a 4th line plug that has 2 points and got his 1st goal of the year last night in garbage time. I think the money could have been used more efficiently. Some players and contracts the team is stuck with but in Goodrow's case the buyout numbers were reasonable and gave them an out. They passed and I think that was a mistake.

What a kick in the balls that they would have gotten a cap credit if they bought out Goodrow this past summer, and if they do it next summer he costs more than his cap hit

Lord that contract stinks, shout out Chris Drury

If they do it this coming summer it’s still a cap benefit.

He might be saving it for a bigger buyout — eg Mika.

I wanted to, but Chris still isn’t taking my calls

Have you looked at the buyout numbers for Mika? Not team friendly. They only save 600k a year for the next 6 years. That was one of the contracts I was referring to when I mentioned that they are stuck with some contracts.

Keep trying. Just don't call him on the weekend.
