Back to the Nylander thing again. Signing Panarin was a good move. I wasn't in love with the timing of it but it was a very good signing that cost the organization NO ASSETS. If the Rangers could make it work cap wise, which is a tall ask, signing another Panarin would be another good move and it would actually correlate to good timing, especially at the same contract Panarin received 3 years ago. I'd give Nylander $11.5m for 7 years.

How would the rangers “make it work” in a cap.
We will have something like 6-9 million in cap this off season, for 3 players.
It’s not happening

Trade Lindgren and Chytil for a young, cost controlled center with potential + picks
Trade Goodrow
Bring up Berard or Othmann and find a 4C that makes less than $1m

There's a path towards making it happen but it's difficult.

Need a D too if you're doing all of this, maybe 2 if Gus also walks.

Our lines need a rejig imo. Something has to happen to get Zibs, Kakko and Kreider scoring at even strength.

Cuylle Zibanejad Kakko
Panarin Trochek Lafreniere
Kreider Goodrow Wheeler
Vesey Bonino Pitlick.

That’s what I’ve been thinking too, but that 3rd line oof.

Honestly...should the rangers try Kakko at center? Kreider/Kakko/Cuylle? Can Cuylle play RW? He can't be worse than Bonino or Goodrow and Mika needs a demotion to hopefully get his head out of his ass. Rangers need Chytil to descend from the rafters. If not then just roll with Kreider/Mika/Kakko so they can defend well at least until Chytil or something else happens at the center position.

No it wasn’t. Lundkvist is just as bad defensively.
and say goodbye to Gabe Perreault by far our best prospect

I haven't thought about it much but something like:

Chytil + Lindgren for Hayton + ARI 1st '25 + NYR 2nd '25
if you're ok with punting away the season. I haven't watched much of Hayton (I know he looked good with Lafreniere in the WJC days) but that trade makes us much worse this season unless you turn around and trade the first and second rounder for a very good d man

Not sure if id break things up after 1 loss against a very good team on the road where they had a 2 goal lead

But - if they do - I def think they need to split the bromance and Vesey could be the one elevated. No offense to Cuylle dropping down.

Its also time to designate the correct line numbers. Breads line is not only line #1 on this team, its one of the best lines in the game right now.

I get it, Mika is the matchup line so therefore needs to be labeled #1C - but maybe start giving him some zone starts against weaker d pairings and see what happens. Wouldnt be against the Cuylle Mika Kakko line either.

Panarin Trocheck Laf
Vesey Mika Kakko
Kreider Goodrow Wheeler
Cuylle Bonino Pitlick

I'm not sure I agree and of course it depends on what else can be done around the roster. Hayton was just an example but I'm sure there will be other teams that would be interested. That or you split them up and trade them individually.

Kreider-Zibanejad-Nylander
Panarin-Trochek-Lafreniere
Cuylle-_______-Kakko
Berard-_______-Vesey

Miller-Fox
Gustafsson-Trouba
_______-Schneider

Maybe Edstrom is the 4C and if they can't find a good young C, go sign someone like Wennberg or someone of that ilk. Perhaps they target a good young LD in lieu of the center.

All I am saying is it's possible. It's difficult and it would mean a shuffling. Better? I think so. Long term I could get behind the move for sure especially if it added assets to the organization that would help backfill open holes moving forward.

I hope a month from now we aren't saying, "Remember when we were 12-2 and we lost to Dallas on the road, after leading by a goal going into the 3rd, then giving up a 5 spot? We have sucked ever since then".

Punt Zac Jones to the moon. He sucks defensively. Sucks. As RB and others have pointed out, against bigger teams he is no match for them. He was terrible tonight.
Yeah in order to justify keeping a player that bad in his own zone in the lineup- they basically have to be a DeAngelo level player offensively.

We need to give someone else a look before Fox is back so we know we have a dependable option

The team has an issue where they have 5 NHL defenseman in the entire organization and one of them is hurt

They need to work on backfilling defensive depth because what they got now isn’t cutting it.

Sammy Blais has 5 5v5 pts this year. Buch only has 3. Is it possible we actually got the better of the trade and just didn’t know how to use him?

All jokes aside maybe this just shows the pitfalls of breaking out 5 on 5 and PP points.

Edit: That Buch stat can't be real, he has 11 points and the Blues have a 7.7% PP. Are all 8 of his non-5 on 5 points in OT, 4 on 4, and shorthanded?

Buch has 6 goals:

3 PPG
2 SHG
1 ES Goal

Wow.
