The problem with your analysis is that there are not Penguins, Blackhawks and Kings (who really don’t belong in this group) for every Islanders...there are Oilers, Panthers and Coyotes for every Penguins.

An enormous amount of luck is involved in the draft process. Look at the 2005 lottery. The Rangers had just as good a chance to get Crosby as the Penguins. The Penguins win the lottery and the Rangers end up with the 16th (and lowest possible) pick. They traded up to #12.

You are right, I don’t have a lot of stomach for a long rebuild. I’m older than most everyone here. I’m not expecting a good season this year but from this point, I’d like to see the team start to turn the corner and move quickly from there. I’m less concerned whether the Rangers draft 3rd or 6th next year than I am to see solid progress and development from the first wave of young players.

Whats the common denominator here? Bad management.

Based on their record from January on, they’re at the bottom.

While I think that is a good point, I'm not very confident in what we saw last season as a barometer towards what they will play like this year.

Detroit, Ottawa, Montreal, are pretty bad. There is a whole group of teams that who knows, I put this Rangers team in there with Vancouver, Carolina, Calgary, Islanders. And then there is always the teams who everyone thinks will be better but so far have not been much better, Buffalo, Edmonton, Arizona and Florida. Colorado seemed to have taken a step forward but they too always seem to be on the brink of who knows. Chicago, I'm not sure if last season was a blip on the radar or if they are not falling from grace. Vegas I assume will be okay but I am not even going to attempt to get a read on them. Teams who may slide due to decline of their important players, I'd put Minnesota, Anaheim, Kings and San Jose in there. I question Philly's goal tending like always, and I wonder if the Devils and Hall can repeat.

I guess I just don't see it as a slam dunk the Rangers are among the worst yet I think it would behoove them to be.

We need to stop pencilling in Shumakov, yes he would be a good signing but unless CSKA lets him walk we have no chance. There are teams in the KHL trying to trade for him before the season starts which is a month from now. Unless Shumakov can successfully wiggle out of his contract we cannot get him.

This guy Mark Stone got a career high of 26 goals and he's getting 7+?? What am I missing here?
He had 62 points in 58 games this season, and has basically been a 60 point player for four seasons in a row.

Why do people do this “oh, x amount for this guy who scored x amount of goals????” shtick like goals are the only thing that affects a player’s cap hit?

Without thinking about it too much, this season coming up could be the toughest season I've had to endure. It will be interesting to see what some of the kids do, but I don't know how much more enjoyable they'll make this season.

Our defense is one of the worst in the league defensively. Skjei is our only defensively solid Dman and even he's a work in progress. Lundqvist is not going to be able to make up for that.

Ok that’s pretty good then

In Berserk's defense, one of the hardest things to calculate in today's NHL is the "rate of inflation" when it comes to player salaries.

The cap keeps gradually going up, and the budget for players at particular levels rises with it.

Sometimes it's hard to figure out that $5 million player from 2014 is a $7 million player in 2018 (or something generally along those lines). So in that sense, I totally get it.

It's kind of like having to constantly adjust production "expectations" for what constitutes a first line player, second line player, etc.

Nearly 25 years ago, your first line wingers better be in the 30+ range, with the top guys scoring 40 or more. Your first line center damn well better be scoring 80+ points as well.

That's gradually changed with time, which is to say nothing about having more balanced offenses.

So it's a constant, but very gradual evolution.

Nash had a limited NTC to 12 teams. Boston was not on his no trade list. Skinner didn’t have that. Full NMC. Carolina wanted him off the team and they traded him to one of the teams he was willing to waive to. I had read a tweet from Chip Alexander who covers the Hurricanes and he wrote Skinner had rejected a trade to another team in June.

Another draft with 3 1sts including one in the top 5 and this team will be ready to take off.

Especially if you get one of those as a mid-first, and then trade it to a team that is slightly retooling/has a player that needs a change of scenery

Assuming you did not watch the abomination that was 98-04? That's worse than this team. They were bad, but didn't know it.

Which is why we should all be second guessing our initial reactions.

I wouldn’t be surprised to see the Rangers finish anywhere in the bottom half of the league. I don’t know how people can be so confident one way or the other, especially with Quinn.

The way they are putting Kreider on the spotlight makes you think they really want to make him captain.

I agree he's getting that spotlight exposure, but I wonder if they will with his impending UFA status in two years...this deadline he'll be in the same spot as McD was this year, so it's make or break time for a decision (and as we've seen, the Rangers are either signing guys long-term or shipping them out...)

Think it was the Kings he rejected a trade too

What’s the time table on Shumakov? They don’t have to let him walk, but if they did it would be before the KHL season starts right ?
