With all this Laf to the right talk, I'm thinking they want to give Laf the keys to Mika's right and see what he can do.

Thats all fine and good for his development, but if you ask me Kakko has earned that spot more than him, or Wheeler.

Balance and combinations will also be stronger, imo.

Panarin Mika Kakko
Kreider Chytil Lafreniere
Vesey Trocheck Wheeler
Cuylle Bonino Goodrow

But do you really have to force him to the right side? Just drop Kreider to the 3rd line with Trocheck which is a good fit, as discussed. Vesey can play either side.

Panarin Mika Kakko
Lafreniere Chytil Wheeler
Kreider Trocheck Vesey
Cuylle Bonino Goodrow

This is close for me...

Panarin-Chytil-Vesey
Kreider-Trochek-Kaako
Lafreniere-Zibanejad-Wheeler
Goodrow-Bonino-Pitlick

I will say that should someone like Cuylle or Othmann impress in camp then that is where someone like Lafreniere MAY have to move right. Say it's Cuylle, I'd consider:

Panarin-Chytil-Lafreniere
Kreider-Trochek-Kaako
Cuylle-Zibanejad-Wheeler
Goodrow-Bonink-Vesey

And if it's Othmann, that's simpler:

Panarin-Chytil-Othmann
Kreider-Trochek-Kaako
Lafreniere-Zibanejad-Wheeler
Goodrow-Bonino-Vesey

We've swing a little too far the other way when a guy with a Cup and a ten year NHL career is less of an authority on his profession than mooks on a messageboard.

I know appealing to authority is a classic fallacy but cmon.

They didn’t reduce his power play time and he went from 26 goals to 8 there… his even strength goal scoring went up by a goal. The problem wasn’t reduced TOI, it was lack of pp puck luck.
it's kind of insane how many deflections and stuff he had last year that went just wide or off the post or something. All those went in the year before and last year just barely missed. Luck is weird!

There were at least 5 that he ended up deflecting into himself.

Not like he was mispositioned and he hit a skate, but like the puck just took a weird hop and instead of going up and over the goalie, it would ride up his stick and hit his own glove.

There’s no way Mika plays 3rd line center. No way

Kreider is 32, not too old and in terrific condition. Still, if we can cut back his time (esp EV) in the regular season and the kids continue to develop, and can match or better his EV totals (and 20 year old Laf by himself was right there last season 35 EV points each) that would be the ideal. Kreider would be more rested for the post season, and suffering less wear and tear would bode well for his longevity. PLUS we’d be investing in development which is helpful short AND long term.
I absolutely think reallocating time and responsibility is a must if we want a team that can compete in the post season. I don’t care if costs us a little in the short term, and it may not. But if we just do the same thing as last year we stand a great chance of being out before the third round. I’d rather have a few less regular season wins.
Exactly why i am hoping krieder is a third liner. With 2 or 3 fewer shifts per period, maybe he doesn’t feel he needs to pace himself, goes a little harder to the net. And he still gets his power play time where he’s very effective.

Pretty sure he deflected one into his own throat at one point last year unless I'm remembering it incorrectly

Yeah, I wouldn’t even number the lines. Except the fourth line. Haha. The top three lines can get close to the same amount of time As each other.
Oddly enough, it seems the same folks who say a few extra minutes and responsibility for Laf or Kakko won’t do anything for their play (I disagree, I think it makes a big difference for developing players) seem to think a few minutes less for vets, like Kreider, will have a big negative impact… (I disagree, these players are fully developed, their skills won’t diminish over it) And as far as the team goes, Laf already shows EV point totals matching Kreider. Any minimal drop off is IMO worth getting these players developed.
