I dont think you need to be an ex-NHL player with success to be deemed a good skills coach.

There are a plenty of ex-semi pro and pro players turned coaches who excel at understanding how to teach. Also, some of the best power skating coaches are ex-figure skaters and/or women who never played hockey.

If Muse hand-picked Hmura then he's probably really good at what he does. Judging by his website he's got a successful development process and is well respected. He's also younger than Ciaccio and may identify easier with the younger players, Laf, etc.

No doubt we needed a change in this position and we got one. At least the Rangers are identifying this as an area they need to improve upon. Lets see how this guy does.

Get Lafreniere to this dude ASAP

Get Laf to Peca and Muse!

How many NHL games has Allaire played?

Allaire is proven. These guys aren't. Jed Ortmeyer and Tanner Glass? Sure, they could be wonderful coaches and maybe they just didn't have the ABILITY, but they weren't known for their skills...

Allarie was unproven at some point.

Ortmeyer and Glass played almost 900 NHL games combined. Its not easy to make the pros let alone the NHL and stick there. They know what it takes to survive in the NHL and what it takes to be a pro amongst 10 different franchises, which is more than half the battle when trying to develop prospects.

Player development encompasses much more than just stickhandling and skating.

I know the Rangers havent had the most sterling results with certain prospects, but several players like Skjei, Buchnevich, JT Miller, K Miller, Fox, Lindgren, Chytil etc. all progressed well as of late. You can twist this argument however you like.

I'm fine with seeing what Ciaccio can do at a lower level. Our issues have been guys making the jump to an NHL game.

Was just typing that, and let's not forget all the great NHL players who were horrible coaches.

Hmura is proven. He's an extremely well-regarded skills coach who has worked with young players for a generation now.

Name one skills coach besides Ciaccio. You can't and neither can I. It's not a mainstream high-profile role. It doesn't mean the guys doing it aren't proven.

Take a look at some of the shorts on this page. Who is this guy and where did he come from?

He is a fantastic skills coach who's built a very successful brand for himself.

He is such a great teacher who talks WITH his students and not TO them.
He has a great knack for making things easier to understand, digest and then perform.

Not every person, let alone ex-pro player has that ability.

I'm a fan of more coaches in general, not less. I think that not only does the cream rise to the top but it pays to have different voices and tones in any organization. Some people will gravitate towards a specific type of leader or teacher while others will go in a different direction.
100%, and this is where you should take advantage as a big organization. Salary cap sucks and evens out the playing field when it comes to the roster. But there should be no excuse for the Torontos, Montreals, Rangers etc. to have the best possible environment, coaching, SCOUTING etc. You can spend all the money you want in that area, it's not restricted by the cap. So do it.

When you have an absolute dinosaur in Sather who still has so much pull within the organization , despite what people here might argue, that won’t happen.

There is no evidence to support this and it's complete conjecture. It shouldn't be stated as fact. I think he has zero weight on the decisions that Drury makes. He might be consulted here and there, but I don't think he has any "pull" whatsoever anymore.

No reason for either side (Laf or Rangers) to budge until training camp, which is not until the third week of September.

Also, why wouldn't Sather want as many coaches as possible to give his team an edge? It's not like another coach's salary comes out of his pay.

Does Barb count?

That’s all I’ve got
