That's the thing, you aren't going to free up $8-9m in cap space.

Just look at the Gaborik trade. Or the Eichel trade. Or the Tkachuk trade. You're going to be getting contracts back, likely at least one of which we won't be enamored with.

And even if you somehow find a way to offload the 11.6m without taking any contracts back, this team is immediately a lottery team again without Panarin and spending that 11.6m on 3-4 guys to replace his production is going to backfire unless you catch lightning in a bottle. Because those extra players have to replace the guys coming out of the line-up as well, so you are not replacing just 90 points.

I get this debate when it's a guy who is no longer contributing but the notion that Panarin is a net negative for this team is utterly ridiculous.

there's nothing Panarin can do when his defensemen are pinned in their own zone because they're too slow to move the puck up the ice. people will argue "but his analytics are worse than everyone elses" but i would argue back that's probably because he kept going 1-on-4 trying to create offense because he literally had no other option. everyone else was just dumping the puck in so they could get turnstyled in the neutral zone when NJ moved the puck back up the ice.
It was an inherently stupid breakout system. I wouldn't fully blame the D. But there is some truth to such a system being implemented because of the D's lack of quickness.

We need a decent-enough balanced attack among the top 9. We need depth scoring. We don't need top-heaviness. We don't need a bunch of players in the top 10 in scoring just for the glory. It's a nice-to-have, but i prefer being good enough to get into the dance and then knowing we have playoff performers versus those who peak in the regular season.

Can we not have both?

Having those 'go-to' guys also alleviates strain on the depth options.

a big thing that hinders the Rangers' scoring, especially lower in the lineup, is the 3rd pair having absolute f*** all for puck skill.

This is a big opportunity for Gus or Jones to help us out. We can't get absolutely shitrocked whenever they're on the ice.

Gus is apparently more of a presence once he's actually in the offensive zone rather than a breakout guy. Not what any of us wants to hear, but that's the book on him.

Think he's more in the DeAngelo camp where he's good for a couple bad turnovers.

We didn't really fix the speed or puck moving issues this offseason. We just have to hope Laviolette's style works with our weaknesses better.

This is definitely correct which is why I don't blame any of the pessimists for this upcoming season. We basically did nothing about our weaknesses except add Wheeler.

Vegas Top player had 66 points last regular season, granted he was on pace for about 82 points, but the players below fell off after that. Rangers had two guys that hit over 90 points.

Carolina's Top player had 71 points, and they made it to the ECF.

Sorry I’m on vacation from gif posting

8000% this.

That and a coherent gameplan will help. The more skilled players can make it up. The less skilled players need a good gameplan from the coaching staff, especially at 5v5

I've said this before, but The Rangers as a team are actually pretty well built to have a couple of lines who thrive at keeping the game simple, moving their feet down low and getting to and near the front of the net for deflections. Guys like Kreider, Trochek, Lafreniere and Goodrow all play that type of style when playing well at 5v5. That SHOULD lend itself to a simple and yet effective game plan, especially if they space out Fox, Miller and Gustafsson/Jones.

the delusion on here that Laviolette is going to fix everything is so funny. we dont have the right personnel on defense unless Zac Jones becomes Zubov.

this is his last chance.

The arguement, which I fully understand, is regular season is worthless if you choke in the Playoffs. 3rd times a charm. I'm giving him slack becuase the ENTIRE team sucked 5v5. EVERY FORWARD.

The system, effort and teamplay was an embarrasment. All around. Not just Panarin. This is his redemtption arc or he will be shipped out of New York. There's no more excuses.

A top 3 defenseman in the league and our defense is all wrong. Got it.

Lindgren 25, Fox 25, Trouba 29, Miller 23, Schneider 21 (!), and either Jones (22), or Gustafsson (31).

That defense is young and just going to get better. The real question here is will they carry a "chip" into the playoffs or fold again up front?

Jones started off last year with us and he struggled. 16 games 2 points and those 2 points came in the same game. Not sure the team but the assist came on that wild goal from an impossible angle by Gauthier that he pretty much almost face planted on.

Having offensive skills doesn't always mean a player is going to produce a lot. Jones is kind of in the unenviable position when on the Rangers where he's not going to get prime power play time because Fox. Even so 31 points in 54 games in Hartford is good/not great production. He was a go to playmaker on Hartford's power play which for the balance of the season kind of sucked. He also needs to work on his defensive play.

Maybe Jones will come to camp and make the team and nail down the job this year. it's very possible but the likelihood is that Erik Gustafsson is going to be No. 6 and he's an offensive guy too. Put up 42 NHL points last year. Also played for Laviolette. My guess is that Jones is more likely to be moved than make the team.

People saying he’s on a downward spiral and it’s over for him need to watch this

If he was able to do this in the playoffs, he would be a f***ing legend in New York...no, he would be a god.

But he has been shit in the post season. That's all anyone's saying about him. Be that guy in the playoffs. It's a legitimate gripe. As much as you want to pretend fans who say this don't have a point, they do.
