It’s funny because if the Rangers had Smith last year as 13F/7D, they could have avoided the deadline cap shenanigans.

I was hoping they would sign him for this reason. Oh and at 5v5 he really isn't a terrible d-man and he plays a pretty physical style. As a #7 he's solid

A player’s contract is part and parcel of the player. Is your evaluation of Smith’s worth to this org wholly in some vacuum devoid of any salary considerations?

I was speaking only of the player. We can discuss them separately.

If you want to discuss them separately, the player was ass most of the time he was here. But if he was making league minimum instead of $4.5m and didn’t cost us a 2nd + a 3rd to acquire, then he could have been a worthwhile 7D, if you ignored the discipline issues that’d get most players without trade protection released from contract.

Is there some rule saying we couldn’t avoid them both?

Smith is still a serviceable NHL player if you can get past the fact that the Rangers saw and evaluated him based on a playoff series and made a huge financial mistake. That's on them. Smith reporting out of shape and losing a year is on Smith. We could've kept him at a lower number than Nemeth and had a better player.

Nemeth though. Woof.

I think the best term to use when describing him is useful. Not good. He is a useful player because scoring is important. When you score even strength points the team has a chance to win and Lafreniere is above average at finishing his chances. I wont take that away from him. He should probably take more shots and try and score more goals, or take more chances. This season I'd like to see his shot attempts per 60 increase.

Most of his hits aren't separating player from puck, they're hits after the puck is moved because he's slow on the forecheck and the backcheck. If you want to see hits on the stat board, great, but our problem has been puck separation, not hits.

I haven't looked at graphs lately but based on watching last season, I'd probably guess his defense declined over the prior season. (Maybe it hasn't and I'll look later to double check).

I will say that I think we got 2 different views of Lafreniere last season. Hopefully this season doesn't start out as bad for him. I'm rooting for the kid. Everybody wants to see their #1 overall pick succeed, but we need better overall play than what we got last season from him.

It's a good point about Laf's hits. His forechecking could do with some improvement. That said I'd rather have hits after the puck moves than no hits at all. His physical play mindset is proactive. On the shooting more.....for me that's even a bigger problem with Kakko and also for me Kaapo will make a significant step towards becoming the player he should once he starts getting more shots to the net. He has a very nice defensive game and he cycles the puck really well in the offensive zone. Towards the end of last year he seemed to be driving the net more but he does need to shoot more.

I like Brendan Smith but he's not a piece that makes or breaks us. After he got his act together and back into shape there were still some issues such as playing outside his skillset.....taking chances in the offensive zone he had no business doing and the team getting burned on the other end. One of the things I liked most about him though is he stuck up for his teammates all the time--even taking on guys much bigger than he was.

The one D I don't want to see on this team ever again is DeAngelo. Don't like him at all.

Brendan Smith and Brady Skjei both played dumb when they were here. Smith's "signature move" if he was a WWE wrestler would be doing the "me?" arguing with the ref on his way to the penalty box.

I wish we could go back to reminiscing over Tyler Motte.

I think had my full turn on AV in the Ottawa series when Skjei had his two goal game in G2, which then led to Skjei being benched for some unfathomable reason (I guess the first JGP goal?), and then they lost on Pageau's OT hat trick.

Hurt extra hard watching that live at Hudson Station, and I went with my Caps-fan friend.

So like...yeah I guess I'm fine going back to reminiscing on Motte, though I do kinda miss Skjei. Smith I could do without although I appreciated him emotionally filling in when needed.

Best memory of Smith was that breakaway goal against Montreal. Wew.

By not signing over 700,000 it clearly sends a message that you are not that committed to the organization. Plus, with no contract for next year it very likely does mean he’s sitting at home in bubble wrap doing nothing because if he blows out his knees and is not under contract he will be paid 0 dollars next year.

Guys, I’m sorry if I come across as strong but really and honestly, this argument that Laf should hold to his guns and wait out the team is insufferable to me. This entitled attitude is exactly why he’s done nothing to make himself into anything in 3 years and why I have absolutely no confidence he will amount to anything other than a mediocre NHL player. That is supposing, of course, that someone does not get in his ear and set him straight. Again, indications are that no one is doing that— especially because of how he’s handling this contract.

Lafreniere, and every other player for that matter, should be committed to themselves 1st and foremost.

And only if it doesn't interfere with the above, commit to the team.

Rangers don't beat Pittsburgh that year. It's like Rangers fans who get upset at the Morrow goal in 1984. It stunk. However they're not touching the 1984 Oilers.

Now 1981, 1990, 1992, 1997, 2012, 2015...yup, those were worse.

I thought that was the one where AV said he "lost him on the bench"

And I am not talking about fighting.. just finishing their checks and back checking!!!
