I’m not scoffing at the player, I’m scoffing at this board’s obsession with him.

He’s also probably going to cost twice as much $ and trade assets than an equal player who wasn’t drafted #3OA.

He's available, a player we could use for sure (completely disagree with @Amazing Kreiderman that he's more of the same, he's definitely what this team needs more of) and hes been rumored to possibly be on his way here...

I mean who else should we be discussing?

Btw my comments on Bennett have nothing to do with DeAngelo. People have been talking about him on here wayyyy before shit went down with Tony. It’s not just here either, people are always talking about him on the main boards too.

waiting for Bennett to finally break out is a futile exercise, he's one of hundreds of high draft picks who ended up as bottom 6 grinders in the NHL. Theres value in a guy like that, and getting that in exchange for TDA while not great value from a production standpoint, he's probably the best we can hope for.

I don’t think anyone (many, anyway) are expecting Bennett to breakout. I do think that some players “figure some things out” around his age. For Bennett that may just mean becoming a consistent 35 point physical force, rather than fluctuating in the high 20s and not having a defined role. I also think some people are suggesting that a change of scenery and a good fit could happen.

Ryan Strome had one outlier 50 points season 7 years ago, but otherwise had been 28, 30, 34, 35 ever since. He was a #5OA pick, and anyone would have said “waiting for Ryan Strome to breakout is an exercise in futility”. Then at 26/27 years old he found himself centering Artemi Panarin and has 65 points in his last 80 games. Did he “breakout”? Is it just a good fit? Who knows. 30 point Ryan Strome did less good things on the ice than 26 point Sam Bennett does.

Do I expect Bennett to come here and put up 65 points in 80 games? No. Is it possible he finds a role as the puck hound on Panarin’s wing and becomes a 40-45 point guy? Is it possible a change of scenery helps him take a step forward, even if that’s not a “breakout”? I’d say it’s possible, at the least.

At a minimum he’s an agitating high energy player who does elevate his game in the playoffs. 20 points and 107 hits in 30 post season games fits on any teams bottom six.

No one should be expecting Bennett to be a 50-60pts player. The potential is there though if he tags along with Panarin. Just like we should not have expected Strome to be a 60pts player when we trade for him. Strome too, was a 30pts player. We've seen it before. 24-25 year old players taking another step in their game. It should not be expected but it's a possibility. Bennett has decent hands and at the least, will make us tougher to play against.

Last year, all of CGYs players had bad years. Their team struggled immensely. Ryan Strome had more points than Johnny Gaudreau.

Also as a counter to his regular season numbers...

Hes gotten it done when they play for keeps. Bennett has a better P/GP in the playoffs than guys like Kreider and Zuccarello.

You know damn well 30 games is not a counter to 373 games.

He’s obviously not a worthless hockey player, but I bet he’s going to cost twice as much as he should. He’s already making $2.5M and he’s a pending RFA. Jesper Fast was making like $1.8M at the same point in his career and he was a much better player. Shit, Fast doesn’t even make $2.5M right now. Grinder making trade requests FFS.

Still think there is almost zero chance we are getting Bennett. DeAngelo isn’t going to be able to fetch a player like him at this point. We can try, as we should, but it’s so unlikely IMO. As there even been any more rumors about him and the Rangers since LBs tweet yesterday?

I didn’t realize we were gearing up for a playoff run.

He’s 24. It’s not a rental... if we have to “dump” DeAngelo a solid third liner who brings it in the playoffs isn’t a bad return.

It's part of why hes getting paid what he is.

His game works in the post season. Even if we aren't a contender or even a solid playoff team yet, its not like you're going to trade for the guy for a single season.

It goes beyond the production though. I highly advise watching what he did to opposing defenses in the playoffs last year. Thats how you wear another team down, we don't really have any of that.

We miss Fast. He's not a top player but he does the things most of the team does not. Hard nose grinder and he's a great leader...

Bennett sucks. He's not a top player and he's a 4th liner. Bust.

Is being consistently, inconsistent a consistency? If we could use Fast.... we could use Bennett. Bennett is a tier above Fast and if we were to compare 'timelines', he's light years ahead

At 22: 0 points in 11
At 23: 14 in 56
At 24: 30 in 79
At 25: 21 in 68
At 26: 33 in 71
At 27: 20 in 66
At 28: 29 in 69

Currently 29 with 147 points in 425 games.

Bennett is 24 with 129 points in 373. Production wise they’re very similar. Play style they’re very similar while Bennett is a lot more aggressive. Age favors Bennett heavily. Fast is a better two way player. Bennett elevates his game in the post season and has the versatility to play center. He’s a good Fast replacement. Bennett isn’t viewed for what he is but for where he was drafted. If he’s a 5th, or even 3rd rounder, he’s loved.

Just watched a vid of Bennett beating the shit out of Trouba. Bring him here. If they don't get along figure it out later, IF YOU KNOW WHAT I MEAN.

I wonder if what's happening is Calgary is waiting it out to see if the NYR has any other legit offers, trying to eek more value out of the deal. If so, there may be no deal. It's also possible Calgary is reconsidering the PR aspects. Or really, none of this. We really need Edge right now.

Obviously he wouldn’t return as much in real life but have you seen what Flames fans want for Bennett? It’s insane.
