There is some question as to whether he can just tell him to "stay home". I don't think it's as easy as that.
Tony has already been sent home and Gorton is working on a trade. I don't think there will come a point, prior to the trade deadline, when Gorton says "sorry, I can't find a deal, just stay home and wait".
The longer it drags on, the more likely it is that Tony and his agent start getting restless, and at some point, the NHLPA will likely get involved. They are going to want Tony to be able to play somewhere, so he can stay in game shape and actually have value to a team trading for him. Maybe the Rangers eventually let him play in Hartford, or loan him out to some other AHL team. But the Rangers are under no obligation to trade him, or to play him. The only reason to trade him is to get something of value back, and to stay on good terms with Pat Brisson, Tony's agent.
