This is really looking at everything in a vacuum. We have covered this quite a bit, especially Edge.

While it may not turn out this way, Tony D had his breakout season last year. He is 8 months older. Who is to say Bennett wont breakout this year or next? And maybe the change of scenery would help him thrive. Regardless he plays a physical game. He can provide insurance at Center even if we played him predominately at wing. He has been good in the playoffs. He is a gamer. This would be a good depth addition for a team that needs more depth.

Plus we don’t have room for more high end offensive players, besides maybe a 2C if Chytil doesn’t pan out. We need to build a better, more stable bottom six. The guys there are doing well this year but they’re tweeners. Barron, Bennett, Berard would potentially be a really nice third line one day, and the kind of bottom six depth you want in the playoffs.

But TDA showed flashes before last year. A guy that broke 30 points once, what flashes has he shown? If he were a defenseman he'd be slightly above average in terms of offense. I don't get, but I guess I can go back at Edge's posts, there just so many posts in this thread.

Well, for example, he’s got 19 points and 107 hits in 30 playoff games. I’d take a guy like that.

They can't buy him out until after the season. That is the point. And if he's their employee, without going through league rules on suspensions (which have very definite criteria and set terms) they can't just say "Stay home".

He has no control over if they deal him or not. Of course he wants to be dealt and to play somewhere. So I'm not sure what your point is about poking the bear. If 2 weeks go by and the team hasn't traded him this will be an issue.
It creates almost no leverage to force a trade, however.

This is a short season. Even if they push it to the NHLPA, by the time the lawyers get involved the season will be over. And then Tony is twice as unemployable as he already is, which is why he wouldn't bother, and why Brisson, as a smart guy, wouldn't touch that strategy with a ten-foot pole. He's getting paid to do nothing but wait until his next chance.

This is a non-issue.

I mean you're not getting him for his offense. If that's what you're betting on then you're setting yourself up for disappointment. Bennett isn't, and probably won't be, a point producer. What he can be is a one man wrecking crew on the forecheck. You could probably just make a highlight video of him laying out Jets and Stars in the playoffs last year.

It's pretty much a foregone conclusion that the Rangers won't get a comparable offensive talent in return for DeAngelo. However, maybe they can get a guy who impacts the team and the game in other meaningful ways and he makes them better in the aggregate. He could also finally give the team a capable net front presence on their 2nd unit PP.

Well ok, but my point stands that he's a monumental bust. He sounds like a good 4th line player, not what you're hoping for at 4 overall.

I think a lot of the thinking from Rangers fans is as maddening as they can be, we're getting the best years out of Strome and Zibanejad. Those guys might have had prettier statsheets on Isles/Edmonton/Ottawa, but they were on worse teams. On the surface level it's similar to moves we made that worked.

Personally I don't consider any player who carves out a legitimate NHL career a bust. Is a disappointment relative to his draft position? Sure, but we didn't draft him so why should it matter?

It was more of a comment when I saw where he was drafted and his production. I'm not lamenting it.

Two questions:

1) Why did Tony clear waivers while teams want to trade for him? His contract?

2) What do you guys think we can get for him?

It’s important to remember just how extreme this season is financially and in relation to the cap.

1. Bettman is on record saying that the teams will lose a combined billion this season. Some teams like we and Toronto will be in the black anyway.

Many teams will in other words be 40-50m in the red.

2. In itself, the cap remaining flat one season puts a huge strain on everyone. Now we know that it won’t only be flat this season, but next season too.

-> I think it’s hard to underestimate how hard it would be to find a team that is willing to take on a 2 year deal at 4-5m period, for any player.

There are only 4 teams per cap friendly with room to take on a 4.1+ m deal. Many teams have huge issues next season too.

In short, it’s the mother of all buyers market.

Sam Bennett is the new Evander Kane on HFNYR. At least Kane was/is really good.

This is not a player ready to breakout:

That is consistent production (until last season, which was actually worse).

Top-5 pick predigree only gets you so far. Ryan Strome was a 5th overall pick who actually puts up points and this fanbase can't wait to get rid of him

We don't need Bennett. He's not a bad player, just more of the same. I rather stick with Gauthier

Nah.

No one expects Bennett to be a 50+ point PF. Middle six 30-ish point shit disturber? I don't understand why thats so easily scoffed at.

It wont be long until this group does get into the playoffs and needs to get through rounds. We'll be much better equipped to do so with dudes like this than we would with the likes of some fancy schmancy perimeter players.

IF we're talking about DeAngelo pre shenanigans, Bennett doesn't sniff him in a 1 for 1. Said Shenanigans happened so here we are. I don't see us doing much better than that.

waiting for Bennett to finally break out is a futile exercise, he's one of hundreds of high draft picks who ended up as bottom 6 grinders in the NHL. Theres value in a guy like that, and getting that in exchange for TDA while not great value from a production standpoint, he's probably the best we can hope for.

I’m not scoffing at the player, I’m scoffing at this board’s obsession with him.

He’s also probably going to cost twice as much $ and trade assets as an equal player who wasn’t drafted #3OA.
