Wanted to get some opinions on an idea I have. Its easy to imagine 4 years from now that Kakko and Laf could be 11-12m per year players. Igor might be getting 9m, maybe the same for Fox? Its hard for me to imagine a world where we can afford Zib. Or really any high end Center. What if our top 2 line Centers were more in the mold of a center version of Hagelin or Fast. A great defensive center that can win draws and doesn't have complete hands of stone. Not to date myself, but something similar to what the Ducks did with Steve Rucchin playing with Selanne and Kariya. Someone like Phillip Danault.

I mean if it all works out that way then to some extent it's a good problem to have. Lafreniere should project as a winger who can drive the play of a line by himself like Panarin. Kakko may not be that kind of player, but we'll have to wait and see on that. The other part will be trying to find young talent and leverage ELC's and lower cost contracts throughout the lineup and some of that may apply to the guys you mentioned (rather than jumping straight to long term high priced contracts we may see more attempts to space things out with bridge contracts, if that works).

Also remains to be seen what the economic impact of the pandemic is going to have on the league 4 years from now. It sounds like the league is really getting hammered...Bettman just said losses aren't in the millions but in the billions

Re: Miller's comment, I think he's not calling himself special, I think he's talking about his dream of making it to the NHL and how special that would be.

Also, just thinking about how there were some rumors that part of the reason he left college is that he struggled to concentrate on school work and the school part of things were just a distraction to him. What I find interesting in that is here he is with an offseason + to focus 100% on hockey and getting ready for this chance and it seems like he threw himself fully into preparing, on a level we might have really expected otherwise

It's way too early to make those assumptions. None of those players are even close to earning those types of contracts, and it's unlikely that they will all reach those levels.

thats exactly what he said...on the verge of something special (meaning playing in the nhl). nowhere did he say 'i'm a special player' not sure where you got that from :naughty:

"Special" is a strong term, but yes playing in the NHL specifically without going to the AHL could have been all he meant.

how is playing in the NHL not special? you misread it and are now trying to double down on a point that was an honest mistakes. we've all been there :)

I hate to be one of those people especially since I always criticize hockey players for boring interviews, but he's a rookie, chill out before you call yourself special (or being on the verge of something special).

Making the NHL is pretty special. You’re being one of those people. He said he felt he was on the verge of something special. He didn’t say he was going to be a star or BE something special. He’s making the team. That’s pretty special. And, while I didn’t take his comment to be at all arrogant or needing to chill out, I’ll take a guy with some extra confidence and an edge on my team any day.

Edit: I see others had already responded. I didn’t mean to pile on.

Capfriendly says 3 GP remaining for Bitteto

The thresholds for player protection have been officially changed. I believe your numbers are correct. It’s a done deal.

thanks guys - i had checked CapFriendly
they had not updated the FAQ - Expansion Draft FAQ - CapFriendly - NHL Salary Caps

however, i went back after your posts, and yeah, this page calls out 27/54
Seattle Expansion Draft Simulator - CapFriendly - NHL Salary Caps

showing Rooney needing 5, Bitetto needing 3
Howden, Strome, Lemieux having met
Gauthier, Hajek, Blackwell needing 26 or 27

just to remind all, team must expose 2 Fs and 1 D meeting cited threshold,
but all players eligible to be selected unless
(a) protected 7F(Bread, Zib, 20, 89, 72, plus 2 vet Fs TBD) , 3D(8, 77, 55) and 1 G(Georgie)
or (b) 1st/2nd year (Fox, Kakko, Igor, ...)
or (c) UFA after this season (Smith, Johnson, PDG,...)

see FAQ URL above for more

I'm not doubling down I admitted that's all he might have meant. I just associate the word with special NHLers. I, just like most people think making the NHL is not the bar. But yes if that's your lifelong dream it's special for you. I just took it differently.

According to Dan Rosen the projected Blue line is:

Lindgren - Fox
Johnson - DeAngelo
Miller - Trouba

if true, that’s an all American d corps
The other day someone made a topic on the main NHL boards about Florida possibly having all Finnish centers at some point in the near future and I spent like half an hour trying to find an instance of this happening on another team (all players at a certain position from one country) to no avail, and here it was, right under my nose the entire time.

Love the idea of Miller with Trouba.

BUT — from day 1?? Oooooooh playing that role takes something completely else than “just” being a regular NHLer. A lot of wear and tear. Heavy duty. Have to play really banged up for long stretches (most likely).

Just saying, that is one big challenge. I am not against it really, just saying that I don’t think many NHL coaches even would have considered putting a rookie in a role like that. Even for a really really good young D it usually take several years in the NHL before you are ready for bigger harder minutes. Often up towards 26-27 y ears of age.. Many can do great getting sheltered and easier minutes. But that role is the opposite of that.

That is pretty awesome. It’s not common. Detroit might have started with all Russian or Swedish skaters a few times.

BTW, in before @Thirty One comes in with like one example of how the Canadians once had 4 centers from Canada in like 61’... ;)

the simple solution is to not pay the goalie 9 million dollars
