Khaira could be a good fit, but he's on an actual contract, not league minimum. Plus whatever the league protocol is with guys moving across the US-Canada border. Plus he's not actually a good player, he just hits and kills penalties

So just going to point out, everything that fast does well, drives into corners, forces puck possession, and makes his linemates better, are all things that laf does but also brings high end skill and an even more physical edge. He's 19 but I have a feeling no one will complain about missing fast in the next month or so.
Is he going to PK? We didn't have enough defensive minded forwards with Fast. Even if we're generous and say Laf is a decent replacement in that regard, we're still lacking.

IMO our middle 6 centers need to be much better defensively and our top9 RWs could add some defense for balance. ( LW is locked for the foreseeable future. Zibs is locked for the next 2 years. ) RW and middle 6 center are the only immediate/realistic areas that can be interchangeable.

Ideally,
Strome is upgraded to an a better defensive option, hopefully Chytil develops over the next few years into that player.
Buch/Gauthier is upgraded to a better defensive option.

I remember expecting D to shape up earlier than forwards but with our draft luck and signing Panarin it looks like it will all come together at the same time, maybe even F core a bit faster.
If Gauthier and Howden/Barren prove out /improve that is a HUGE PLUS for the Rangers...filling them spots from outside the organization would sting . It might not seem like much....but being young and eager in the bottom six has it advantages and they still have the chance to move up if need be . A big question now is how will they evolve under Quinn ? Is he the guy that lights that fire under them ? It's a big season for him and not just some players . Remember....he was not the man put there by Davidson and Gorton also knows that .

Flames put 23 year old D Oliver Kylington on waivers. only makes 787k... shoots left. I haven't watched him play a ton, but this seems like something to at least consider.

Think he was the guy CGY offered to the Rangers during the trade deadline sell-offs. Think it might have been for Hayes. Kylington's been out there for a while. Not a great defensive player, but is a very gifted skater. He's one of the rare guys who played pro in Europe and stuck around in the AHL the last few years during his ELC.

Word out of CGY is that they tried to get him into their roster openings, especially the last two years. He is a 'high-event' player who needs sheltered minutes, and the trade-off has not been favorable at all. He might be a great fit on a very tight system where he can try his hand at being a more boring defenseman, especially outside of his own offensive zone, but you aren't getting a lot of assurances here.

NICK HOLDEN on waivers too.

So much bandwidth was tied up here debating Holden’s potential, when it seemed so clear he was a career AAAA guy. Maybe it was the lack of exciting players in the system at the time.

The boards, like a lot of sports fandoms, typically spend a lot of energy debating the fringe players.

Contract year Buchy:
"I just want my team to make the playoffs,” Buchnevich said. “I don’t [care about] the points or that stuff, lately I just want to help my team win the games and make the playoffs. That’s it.”

“The guy that’s kind of jumping out to all of us is Buchnevich,” coach David Quinn said. “Obviously, he had a real good second half last year. This is the best camp he’s had since I’ve been here."
Not enough love here, Buch is gonna take another step this year

Personally, I want to see a Robertson/ADA pairing.

Now that is something that actually has some long-term potential.
I doubt Tony is in any long term plans...that is his script to write and so far not looking great and I am one of his bigger fans in here . I'll cheer for him and hope for the best for him and for the team . But...the team has to come first and not Tony . He is a 3rd pair guy right now on this club and likely for the near future . He is a hard guy to discuss without crossing lines. I sure hope he can see the light soon .

Interesting note is that Kylington was a player the Rangers scouts liked in 2015. Had he slipped to 62, I wouldn't be the least bit surprised if he was their first choice.

I remember wanting the Rangers to take him with what ended up being the Gropp pick. I'd be fine with taking him and putting JJ on waivers - how much worse could he be?

ADA is one of those players who has a higher probability of being moved sooner rather than later. But, there's no way of knowing for sure.

Even those high probability scenarios throw you a curve once in a while.

That should have been the argument against Kreider, not Mika. Almost all our youth is at the wing position and very little at center (even before Lafreniere). Kreider will be cheaper but that is just because he is worse.

If we traded Kreider and ended up with the 10th OA and picked Lundell (for the sake of argument), our LW depth going into this season would have been Panarin, Chytil (or any other "technically out of position" young guy), & Lemieux. There was no way to foresee having three top-line LW a year ago. Sure, Kreider's deal would have been shorter and for less money if it was signed after COVID hit, but at the time it was a good deal where sure, the last two years wouldn't be very good.

Where do I sign?
Rangers whiffed badly on that one. Our left side is the weakest in the league and he still can’t get a spot

I see the infusion of young LD at the time (him, Lindgren, and Rykov) as an entire "at bat." Lindgren is an RBI double, so it doesn't matter if Hajek and Rykov were two strikes.

Kylington would be an interesting claim. Thought he might be a name that popped up when Hayes to Calgary was rumored. Not sure where he fits in though.
