The point about potential cap hell? That’s why we really shouldn’t be looking at a high price 2C. Chytil needs to be the guy. We’re spending the money and draft investment on game breaking wingers. That means the 2C just can’t be another big money guy gotta let Chytil develop there imo.

Nobody claiming Tyler Johnson right? We would have heard that leak. I really hope no one does Tampa any favors

If it's not "improving" the team then why bother in the first place is all I'm saying.
I do think it's unfortunate that with such a young team how limited their options are..

I think they make the AHL stronger and give us options if we need call ups, which we almost certainly will.

I think they he’ll and improve the depth. But I also think not every improvement is necessarily reflected in a tangible benefit that is inherently clear or that produces noteworthy results.

It’s kind of like putting air in your tires: Necessary, but not inherently something you view as a huge improvement to your vehicle.

Despite the Jack Johnson signing, even if the Rangers do nothing else, they still had one of the best off-seasons of any team in the league. Let’s not forget that.

Not that it's worth much, but NHL network had a segment today where analysts ranked the top 5 offseasons so far and both had NYR in the top 5.

Everyone is talking about the negative impact Johnson has on the ice. No one is talking about the boost a team gets when he leaves. LA traded him and won 2 Cups in 3 years. Columbus ditched him and won their first playoff series killing the giant Tampa Bay Lightning. We only need to wait one season to get that boost.

Or we can look at it this way, Crosby Malkin 1st and 2 overall picks 3 cups, Kakko and Laf 1st and 2ed overall picks...

I'm all for stopgaps when needed but they also need to set the example for the youngsters and not just take up space.
Staal did that in spades but JJ?
Not so much..

I dunno, most reports have him as a solid citizen and he’s certainly learned some tough lessons.

I think his time on this roster will be relatively short and uneventful in the grand scheme of things though. So I am right back to where I’ve always been - I don’t like the signing, but it’s also not something I think regresses our roster or indicates some kind of bold new direction.

So put a shit ton of money on the Pens to win the cup is what you’re telling me

I do think one of the factors in play at least on this board was a lack of understanding (despite @GAGLine best efforts) of how significant the bonus impact was. Taking one look at @Thirty One spreadsheet and it is clear how little room there is (right now).

Now if JJ was the best target to use limited space - I mean sure, have at it. But the reality is the NYR are tight against the cap to start the season. Once some of the accruals evaporate perhaps they have more space to make a move at the TDL if they team is playing well enough to warrant it.

I don't have anything personally against him and for the most part I'm of the same opinion but as you and everyone else knows, I can't stand DQ so we'll see how he utilizes him.

How DQ/ Martin handle him is of more a concern than the actual player to me..

If a rookie LD doesn’t make the roster, I would keep an eye on whether Miller, etc. are a phone call away or whether the AHL becomes more of a bubble that is only tapped into on an emergency basis, or if a guy is coming up to the NHL to stay.

I hear you and I'm gonna try and sway away from always coming off negative.
It's just the common sense shit that JG does in particular that I'll just never agree with since he's taken over.
Bugs the shit out of me while everyone praises this guy when all he's done is lose.
Story for another time..

My concern in regards to Strome and DeAngelo is that both players put up very strong numbers in a shorten season. Both players were(are) expecting to make bank. Now though the market has dropped out from under them and if they stay for less than they believe they deserve I worry about attitude and how that will affect the younger players who will be their teammates. As much as I advocate for keeping Tony DeAngelo if he has soured this may be a problem.
