I said something similar last year and was attacked...beware!!!

This is an epidemic on this board. I don't know how anyone looked at this FA class and said to themselves "HOLY SHIT WHAT A GROUP! SO MANY AMAZING PLAYERS! WE NEED TO GET THESE GUYS!"

Between the choice of actual players available and the pandemic, to think the Rangers were going to improve this team into a contender via this free agency is baffling.

I've said it before and I'll say it again. There are only two things that are going to make this team better: The play and growth of our young players, and trades. That's it. And the trades will come - they always do. But they happen always at the last minute and at the right time.

Years and years and years of having to build a team via free agency, we finally have a million prospects, including a #1 and a #2 overall in the system, and people are bitching about not signing 100 year old Miko Koivu. What exactly are people's expectations for this team next season? If it's "Win the Cup" your expectations are not the same as those running the team.

I mean, we signed f***ing Panarin last season, and now people are pissing their pants because the Rangers didn't sign Wennberg?

yeah that cap space can disappear in a hurry especially if we lands a 2C...and are lucky enough that are kids are good and earn big raises.

Elite young talent eventually comes with elite costs if they fulfill their potential.

So we all love Fox and Kakko and Lafreniere. We all want them to succeed.

But we also need to understand that if they’re as good as we think they are, that’s going to be our big ticket money for a while.

Considering the $15M in dead space or whatever and the $10M in rookie bonus allotment, this year is basically over before it began. Forget about making moves for this season. It's all about cleaning up the books and lining up center depth for next season. I'm not too worried about the holes on defense or JJ for that reason, prospects will be ready for 21-22. We'll have to trade for C this season and sign for C next off season. Re-sign Strome at whatever and deal him at the deadline and go from there.

Something to consider is your first point.

The Rangers committed big dollars to Panarin, and to a lesser extent Trouba. They have A LOT of young talent and it’s going to cost them over the years to keep that talent.

We might not be players in the UFA sweepstakes for a while - even with money coming off the books.

To take this point further. When Trouba and Panarin were brought in and to a lesser extent, when Kreider was re-signed -- we didn't know we would be get #1 OA. We were likely getting a player in the first round that was a year or two away from their ELC. We likely didn't need to worry about having another bonus baby THIS year. And on top of that we got ANOTHER 1st rounder who has a shot at turning pro. We've gotten very lucky in this regard, but it's changed a lot of the financial planning.

Lastly, in regards to Fast, if we had stayed around pick #12 we likely would have targetted a Center. And maybe that would have left a slot open for Fast. But we are now flush with young offensive wingers. The money we have really needs to go to a Center and MAYBE a top 4 LHD.

I get what you're saying but how do you rationalize bringing reality mediocre talent?
It's a head scratcher for sure..

A lot of those guys are AHL types, depth signings and AAAA players. I honestly don’t think the Rangers look at any of them as key pieces. I really don’t.

Truth is it might happen next season. I have to warn everyone that is a possibility - especially depending on if Miller and others are kept away.

Now, if they resign him to a multi year deal and building the left side of the defense around him, I’ll be right there tearing down the wallpaper with others.

That seems to be the trend these days in NYR-Land but again.. Not sure how he helps us other than on the PK but I'll sit back and see how things shakes out.
I honestly don't think these kids are going to be ready but certainly hoping otherwise.
TBD..

From July 1, 2019 to March 2020 we committed $24 million to three players to improve the roster.

That’s a lot of money before we even get into drafting a potential franchise player and factoring in his bonuses.

Well that last point is exactly why they potentially needed a stopgap in the first place.

Edge, do you see this as a big problem? Like, is it likely that we are going to be in cap hell in about 2-3 years? Or does the organization have a plan to fix this? I don’t know what the Rangers can do.

We did get the best player of the offseason.

We also got the worst player of the offseason.

but yes we did get the best player this offseason no question

That’s a false equivalence if I’ve ever seen one. The negative impact Johnson may have on the outcome of the season is nowhere close to the positive impact Lafreniére will have.

With Hall being very hit or miss, and Pietrangelo being inconsistent (coming from what I heard from Blues fans), you might be right

A bunch of excellent points here.

If it's not "improving" the team then why bother in the first place is all I'm saying.
I do think it's unfortunate that with such a young team how limited their options are..

Its a net positive imo.

As of now, Johnson is replacing Staal ( I still dont think Johnson plays, much if at all ). The offseason is not over. We're months away. Lafreniere replacing Fast?

We still need help from defensive side of things. A 2way middle 6 center. And a solid 'shutdown' LHD. Nothing has changed and UFA was not going to change it

I'm all for stopgaps when needed but they also need to set the example for the youngsters and not just take up space.
Staal did that in spades but JJ?
Not so much..
