I don't really get why OTT would trade for Strome. Like, unless they offer him some outrageous deal (which they won't as they are OTT) why wouldn't Strome just elect arbitration and leave after the season?

In Strome's case, he could get a decent deal and has a chance to get regular playing time for a while.

Probably has to weigh security with a longer term contract playing somewhere he may not want to vs rolling the dice and hoping he can produce the way he did last season to get a better deal else where.

Rangers trade him, he goes to arbitration and gets 1 year $4MM say. He gets hurt or has a poor year, he likely won't get that $4MM AAV in his next deal. Or he does awesome and can go to the team of his choosing and likely more money, but its a risk. And a pretty big one for someone who doesn't have a good track record sans 1.5 years with the Rangers (while he was playing with a star winger for the majority of the time).

Or he can sign longer term, say 3 or 4 years at a higher AAV, let's say $4.5MM, now he's set to make $18MM over the term of the contract, no matter how good or bad he plays next season.

Could be them wanting a veteran to take some pressure off their young centers and hope they get almost as much or more coming back when they trade him at the deadline at worst.

I really don't mind Strome. I just mind how we use him. On a contender, he's a 3c. He's going to get paid more then he's worth though. So, deal him and recoup some assets.

I think sometimes we get so used to shitting on certain guys that we convince ourselves that we're the only team that would employ them.

Ryan Strome has been a good player for this team over the last 2 years. He plays both wing and center. He's a younger veteran player who has quite a bit of experience in the NHL and he's a known guy who teammates gravitate towards in the locker room. I could see why a team like Ottawa would be willing to go 3-4 years for him. Especially considering they will have issues attracting veteran guys as UFA's.

@Edge So we are currently talking to San Jose and Calgary for a center or defense.. While talking to the sens about strome going there.. prob for picks?

Anything else im missing?

And likewise, Strome could see a situation where he's not going to get bumped any time soon, has a key role to play, and maybe even get himself on last good contract at the age of 30 or 31.

San Jose has at least asked about a goalie.

Calgary has expressed past interest in a forward.

The Sens have kicked the tires on Strome.

There are at least two other teams they've chatted with in the last 72 hours.

Unless he's hell bent on winning a cup in the next few years or absolutely hates Ottawa as a city I don't see the benefit in passing on the term to try his luck in free agency.

Especially as a mid-range free agent in what could still be very uncertain times, and with the knowledge that if he signs a a four year deal, and maintains some success, he could still go out at 31 and pursue a Zucc type deal.

Strome feels like he's been around forever, but the guy just turned 27. This doesn't have to be his last contract.

Ottawa does not exactly seem like an organization that is going to go out and offer the big money or term that he would regret turning down.

They're cheap but I don't think they're so cheap that they wouldn't throw a 4yr deal at him worth $5m per. Which is probably much more than the Rangers are willing to offer at this point. He can weigh that against a shortened season on a bad team in a flat cap era possibly driving his FA market value down further.

To build on the Sens nugget Edge dropped in the Staal thread, this came out of a Garroich article about two weeks ago:

GARRIOCH: The decision to let Mark Borowiecki go to market will be just one of many changes in Ottawa | Ottawa Sun

Wonder what team has a veteran center that can play in the top-six they'd be willing to give up for picks?

Sens have 7 2nd round picks in the next two years. Sure makes it easier to trade one of yours with Staal if you're confident you can get one back for Strome.
If Ottawa drafts Byfield, perhaps they would be willing to part with Norris or Brown for Strome.

Maybe an outside chance on Brown but Norris had a hell of a year in the AHL and I think he's someone they really like. I think it's more likely they offer up some combination of 20/21 picks.

I could see the Sens sending a 2nd for Strome and a guy like Anisimov Returning.

Only if DeAngelo gets a 2nd line C

Still think we are going to hear Krug rumors

Ahh okay. So we are possibly trading Lundqvist or georgiev. Geo for picks, lundqvist giving up like 2 3rds to get rid of that albotross contract.

Calgary is buch and maybe something more for Elias Lindholm .

Strome for picks. and maybe we use those picks for something else..

This is getting interesting
