Here's what I think can happen, and truth be told, financially the following trade makes a ton of sense for the health of the league and one of their organizations. @bobbop Would love would thoughts. Plausible? Fair?

Why would ARI do this? Recent Events:

  • Re-Coup some futures that they just traded away
  • Re-Coup some of the futures that they just lost in the form of a 2020 2nd, and a 2021 1st has punishment
  • Most Importantly, move ~$60M of hard cash obligations in their situation
  • New ownership got hit hard by Covid
From ARI:
  • Clayton Keller ($57.2M)- Guy that the Rangers wanted to trade McDonagh for a the 2016 draft, and has history with Quinn.
  • Jordan Osterle ($1.6M)- Defensive Depth
  • Aaron Ness ($325k)- Minor League LHD
  • Robbie Russo ($425k)- Minor League RHD
From NYR:
  • Pavel Buchnevich ($3.5m)- Outscored Clayton Keller in the NHL last year in fewer games.
  • Brenden Lemeuix (RFA- ~$1.25M)
  • Mathew Robertson (ELC) / Karl Henrikson (ELC)
  • Lias Anderson (ELC) / 2021 3rd Round Pick
  • 2020 1st Round Pick (22)

Might be a tad on the high side in terms of quantity, but if you think about it, this is a trade the Rangers can afford. Both in terms of asset management, the Rangers can certainly afford to pay a premium. The cap won't be an issue going forward. In Keller, you have a kid with Patrick Kane like skills who needs the type of work that Quinn would be great at helping with imo.

Oh and uh... he may be that 2nd line center that everyone has been craving. He's played the middle before.

Is that per year for Keller, or total contract value

We need another Finn. It still baffles me that we let an 18-year old kid, who was being hyped as the savior of one of the most storied and popular franchises in the league, come to the biggest city in the world where he barely spoke the native language and we didn't get him another countryman. The only player who spoke his native language was Zibanejad and that's because his mother is Finnish. Get. Another. Finn.

That or the Knicks should trade for Lauri Markkanen and MSG should have a reality show centered around Kakko and Markkanen living together in Manhattan.

This isn't nearly as big a deal as you think it is. Washington didn't go out of their way to add another Russian to their team when OV arrived.

The Rangers housed him with a family of Finns IIRC. If they can add a Finn who fills some holes and is a good player, the national commonality between the two players is a bonus. It shouldn't be the driving force behind making any moves though.

I'm pretty sure Zubrus spoke Russian, but don't know 100%

They had Zubrus. Zubrus speaks fluent Russian represented Russia in international competition, so Ovechkin did have a veteran guy to lean on. And Ovechkin was a more outgoing personality who went out of his way to integrate himself with the North American culture and locker room. Kakko seems like more of a shy, introverted guy.

I don’t doubt for a second JD and Gorts are seeing teams like the islanders and hurricanes playing structured hockey and knowing they have more talent that just needs to be put in position to win. You can’t play pond hockey out there and I’m not sure quinn. Is even capable of it. Martin adds a grown up to the room that gets it. Don’t be surprised if/when Sullivan is next out the door in Pittsburgh that we jump on him right away.

This was pretty much the only thing my grandfather said the last two years of his life.
The last words my grandmother ever told me we how much she liked Mrs. Savant, immediately follows by how much she hated my ex-girlfriend that I dated right before meeting Mrs. Savant. True Story.

Zubrus is less of a Russian than Zibanejad is a Finn.

Helping getting players acclimated to a locker room and city should really be a team thing regardless of nationality. If it was a problem for Kakko, the problem is in our room.

Definitely, Buchnevich seemed to do just fine when he came over. Granted, it's not exactly 1-to-1 because he was older and they're different people

Zubrus is definitely not a typical Russian. Growing up in the Baltics and the Ukraine, he's far from a Moscovite although he does speak Russian from what I can remember. But having someone on the team who speaks your language is a benefit

IDK what that means. Because one is Scandinavian and one is from the Soviet Union. Okay?

Maybe it is. IDK, and maybe we're projecting. But if you take a step back, think of it from Kakko's perspective. 18, New York City, not a fluent speaker of English, under the microscope...

Zibanejad's mom is a Finn. He literally has Finnish blood and is fluent in the language.

So what? Who's to say how fluent Zibanejad is in Finnish? His father is Iranian and I doubt he speaks Finnish. He grew up in Sweden, speaking Swedish. Without growing up in the Zibanejad household, who's to say how much Finnish was spoken at home? Maybe Zibanejad knows basic words and phrases.

He's fluent in Swedish, Farsi, Finnish and English
