The AAV might not be horrendous, but that’s a lot of term for a guy who might be our 3rd best LW in 2-3 years. If that contract ages poorly then we are going to wonder why we went for it for a guy having a great season on a team at least two years away. The assets acquired would have likely been pretty valuable. Obviously, no one knew we were miraculously winning the lottery and no one foresaw a pandemic causing a flat cap. I get it, just didn’t like it at the time and like it less now. It’s not the worst thing in the world though. I think he’s got quite a bit of good hockey in front of him.
Listen, there’s no disagreement here regarding a lot about CK..

My only concern and knee jerk reaction was this:

He’s certainly paid like he is!

Reality is he’s not. That’s all bud.

Kreider is the 50th-ish highest paid forward and the 100th-ish best producing forward, which is just fine, imo. While there are obviously better producing forwards on better contracts, CK is just fine where he is. There are SO MANY worse players on worse contracts.

We can figure out the LW logjam over the next couple years easily, anyway.

Dvorak is someone I am highly interested in.
Me too. Have been for years. Would easily give up the CAR pick + to get him.

I wonder how a team like ARZ world view players like Andersson, Rykov, and Hajek, who were all highly rated within the last 12-18 months but have hit speed bumps to varying degrees. Do any of them move the needle, or do you have to give up a guy like Robertson? Honestly, I might still do it, if push came to shove...

You know, the more I think about it, the more I think the Rangers’ plan on defense for the coming 2 years is as follows:

1) Sign ADA to a bridge deal.

2) Buy out Staal.

3) Sign a vet LD to a relatively low-cost 2-3 year deal.

4) Miller and Reunanen remain in NY on an expanded COVID era roster. (If HFD actually does play, great, one or both can go there, but I don’t see it as of this moment.)

5) Miller and Reunanen are given every opportunity to win (a) spot(s) out of camp, with the understanding both may have ups and downs, and be in and out of the lineup.

Result:

Smith*-Trouba
Lindgren-Fox
Vet LD*-ADA

*Sub in Miller/Reunanen over the season as their play allows.

Then, next offseason,

6) Trade ADA for a haul.

7) Expose the vet LD in expansion.

8) Depending on whom Seattle selects, sign a vet D as insurance again (could even be Smith on a much cheaper and shorter deal).

9) Sign Lundkvist and give him every shot to win a spot out of camp like they did Miller/Reunanen the year before.

Result:

Miller/Reunanen-Trouba
Lindgren-Fox
Reunanen/Miller*-Lundkvist*

*Sub in vet D or another prospect, as needed.

Obviously, there are a fair number of moving parts to all that, and it doesn’t take into account the possibility that a trade for a core LD presents itself or another guy like Hajek or Robertson comes into camp and absolutely seizes a job (or heaven forbid, the kids all bomb out), but it makes the most sense to me given what we have/know now — especially in a flat cap era, when players on ELCs will be roster building gold (to an even greater degree than they already are).

Looking through it, that's a pretty sad list. Have we really never drafted a forward who reached the hall?

Who even gets the honor of best forward the Rangers have drafted? Vickers? Kovalev? Weight?

I’d probably go with Middleton. Amonte, Sandstrom and Savard are also in the conversation.

This is why you need a diverse lineup of player types. You cannot build your lineup just to be all one dimensional players. You need sandpaper. Yes they need to be able to play hockey and Reaves certainly can so Vegas did a great job bringing him in. I have watched this series and Reaves has terrorized Quinn Hughes and Vancouver. Yes during the regular season the need not be as dramatic, but come postseason it certainly will be. Hughes could be Kakko, Lafreniere, Fox, etc. And while Reaves linemates have always played hard, Carrier and Stephenson are absolutely playing an even heavier game knowing he is on their line.

I’m curious how many teams would even be interested in Keller right now. Do we all think the offers would need to be that great considering everyone knows ARI would be mainly looking to dump salary?

Also yes to Reaves if Vegas looks to trade him. I’m still a fan of adding Roussel if Vancouver is looking to dump salary. Find guys with a year or two left and the Rangers should be able to fit them under the cap. Their contracts will expire right when the Rangers will need the cap space.

Here's what I think can happen, and truth be told, financially the following trade makes a ton of sense for the health of the league and one of their organizations. @bobbop Would love would thoughts. Plausible? Fair?

Why would ARI do this? Recent Events:

  • Re-Coup some futures that they just traded away
  • Re-Coup some of the futures that they just lost in the form of a 2020 2nd, and a 2021 1st has punishment
  • Most Importantly, move ~$60M of hard cash obligations in their situation
  • New ownership got hit hard by Covid
From ARI:
  • Clayton Keller ($57.2M)- Guy that the Rangers wanted to trade McDonagh for a the 2016 draft, and has history with Quinn.
  • Jordan Osterle ($1.6M)- Defensive Depth
  • Aaron Ness ($325k)- Minor League LHD
  • Robbie Russo ($425k)- Minor League RHD
From NYR:
  • Pavel Buchnevich ($3.5m)- Outscored Clayton Keller in the NHL last year in fewer games.
  • Brenden Lemeuix (RFA- ~$1.25M)
  • Mathew Robertson (ELC) / Karl Henrikson (ELC)
  • Lias Anderson (ELC) / 2021 3rd Round Pick
  • 2020 1st Round Pick (22)

Might be a tad on the high side in terms of quantity, but if you think about it, this is a trade the Rangers can afford. Both in terms of asset management, the Rangers can certainly afford to pay a premium. The cap won't be an issue going forward. In Keller, you have a kid with Patrick Kane like skills who needs the type of work that Quinn would be great at helping with imo.

Oh and uh... he may be that 2nd line center that everyone has been craving. He's played the middle before.

Ouch. We’ve had pages of discussion where Buchnevich was reasonably called out as an eventual cap casualty and you come up with proposal to replace him with another top-6 winger who ALREADY carries this level of contract? And not just a one-for-one trade - the Rangers were ALSO to give up a 1st round pick in the process? Then you’re throwing in LD or C prospect either ranked #1 or #2 in these positions on the Rangers prospects depth chart.

Arizona has not been strong down the middle and still Keller hasn’t been given a chance over (next to) elder Stepan or youngster Dvorak.

I’m sorry but this is not a trade to take advantage of Arizona’s difficult situation.

what is the site that has individual player heat maps in the offensive and defense zones?

Edmonton doesn’t have a good experience with our backup goaltender. If anything Georgiev would be a good but secondary piece in a trade.

Talbot had 2 very good seasons there, including a 42 win seasons where he finished 4th in Vezina voting and was involved with Edmonton's deepest playoff run since 2006.

Don't know if I'd call that a bad experience.
