From what I read, only three teams made an offer to Jagr. One of them was Calgary, another was the Blues (after they lost like half their forward roster to injury. They have since settled on Scottie Upshall.) This assessment of Jagr is more than just NYR and Florida not wanting him.

I think it’s a tad crazy to call Jagr the best player on a team that has Barkov, Trochek, and Huberdeau, but that’s just me. Jagr will fit well in Calgary, and he’s still a valuable top-6 guy. There is always going to be that worry that his game will fall off a cliff, just like it did with MSL

Florida is a weird situation.

They went all in on the advanced stats thing, but then backpedaled on it before they could even see what they had for the future

The owner set an internal cap for the team at 65 million, so they had to cut costs somehow. But them trading away guys like Smith and Demers for basically nothing is kinda puzzling.

There was rumors they were trying to trade for Gudbranson back, which is also weird

I don't think they'll be one of the worst teams in the league, because they have some high end forwards, and they have a fine defense. But they won't be great. Middling I guess

I thought we should have claimed Jurco also, but Fast is only out a matter of days at this point. If all we need is a fill-in for Fast, Carey is the man. (spoiler alert - we dont need a fill-in for Fast)

Well, i wanted Jurco because he's solid depth, him being able to fill Fasts role (both 5v5 and PK) is just an added bonus.

I hate Vesey on the 4th. Should be Grabner. I understand the history aspect, but believe that Grabner will have a hard time repeating the goal scoring from last year.

On Holden.....if he is here, he is playing. The leash afforded to him and Staal is rather long. No matter what promise some of the younger defensemen show.

He scored 20+ goals 3 times in his career, and 16 in the shortened season. Pro-rated that's 20+, making it 4 out of his 8 NHL seasons. Let's not pretend that last season was a fluke. Grabner has the tools to score 20 goals. It's more likely than Vesey doing it.

The deal was supposedly Demers to Vancouver for Gudbranson. Demers has a NTC to Vancouver. Tallon didn't trade Gudbranson or sign Demers.

Yeah Grabner is a better player right now, team wants to win, it's about putting your best players on the ice now

He scored over 20 goals in two of his first three years. Prior to last year, the last time he scored that many was back in 2011-2012. So yeah, I see his 27 last year as a complete fluke.

Vesey netted 16 last year. He has many more steps to grow and take forward. If he were not playing on the 4th line, I would say that I think that his chances of scoring 20 were better than Grabner's.

This not a disparagement of Grabner. He is a good 3rd/4th liner who brings various things to the team. But I would be very wary of him coming close to the offensive outburst of last year again.

And I would be surprised if Vesey ever turns out to be more than a 3rd line winger. At this stage, he is exactly what Grabner is. But without the defense, speed or ability to decide games. Vesey is very vanilla (To use an HF term).

He is Vanilla? I'm not the biggest Vesey fan but in the playoffs he sure didn't seem Vanilla to me also considering it was his first nhl playoffs.

He had flashes of brilliance on the ice but he still needs to put everything together. It was a good overall showing for his first playoff experience.

Agreed. He seemed to work well with Nash as well. Would have been nice if Kreider and Stepan had those flashes of brilliance as well in 2017 playoffs ( i know both of those players have had huge playoff goals especially in 2015)

I disagree.

Years he didn't score 20:
09-10 (Rookie Year): 5 in 20, pace for 20 goals
12-13 (lockout year): 16 in 45, pace for 29 goals
13-14: 12 in 64
14-15: 8 in 34, pace for 19
15-16: 9 in 80

The years that stick out are 13-14 and 15-16. 15-16 was a Leafs team that was actively tanking for Matthews. More often than not Grabner scores or is on pace to score around 20-30 goals.

Vesey and Grabner both should be on the third line. Everything I saw of Grabner in preseason says he’s going to score goals again. Maybe not 27 but I’d be surprised if he didn’t put up around 20.

The wild card continues to be chytilmania. If he had gone back to Europe Miller would be in the middle and vesey and Grabner would be on the third line together.

This really is what I expect soon enough

Then the question is who comes up to play with Jesper and DD? Carey is your 13th so who gets the call? IMO it’s probably Nieves at that point.
