Roster Building thread - Part IX - (2024 edition)

Curious if people re-consider trading for Trevor Zegras if you feel like Chytil's career is hanging on by a thread. IMO, Chytil is all but done. The next big hit, it's all over. If he somehow plays a couple more years, its gonna be a scared Filip Chytil, not an NHL caliber version ( See: Nash, Rick - Guy was never the same after his 2nd and 3rd concussion )

If something is brewing in Anaheim and he wants out, how do you not pull the trigger for a guy who can clearly put up points as an NHL center and is only 22 years old....... so long as the ask isn't insane of course?
Well a lot of cap space will be needed

I vehemently disagree about Perry not being a fit here. He’s a perfect guy to play with someone like Vesey or Cuylle in the bottom-6. Go get the puck, move it back to the defensemen and get to the front of the net.

This is a guy who has won and proven to be a playoff contributor. I don’t care if he’s considered ‘slow’. So are Goodrow and Bonino.

He’s a free asset and the type of guy the team should be looking for at the deadline anyways and he’d cost no assets, which are in rare supply within the organization.

If you spread up Goodrow and Perry it’s not a big deal. And let’s not forget that one of the more effective 4th lines in the league last year was Maroon, Perry and Bellemare. Maroon and Perry aren’t exactly burners and they worked together

You can’t spread them when everyone is healthy/other additions are made.

I won’t go as far as to say that he’s just a name but we have bigger needs and not a whole lot of space to make adds (unless Chytil is actually out for the year, but then you need to factor in his replacement as well.)

Every dollar counts.

I’m keeping a list of everyone who’s fine with Perry being slower than molasses.

He’d replace Bonino or Pitlick on the roster. It’s not a factor or adding $$. He’d be an improvement and won’t cost anything.

If I were to tell you that this would be the roster after the trade deadline what would you say?

Panarin-Trochek-Lafreniere
Kreider-Zibanejad-Kakko
Cuylle-Chytil-Perry
Pitlick-Goodrow-Vesey

I think that’s a vast improvement and it also improves PP2. If they prefer Wheeler in lieu of Pitlick fine

How is Perry replacing Bonino on the roster when Bonino is their number 1 PKer and Perry has not killed penalties regularly in 10 years? It's not the same role. Pitlick, yes.

Because the team has a shitload of options to PK.

Zibanejad
Kreider
Trochek
Kakko
Vesey
Goodrow
Chytil

And this assumes they won’t start using Cuylle out there too.

I’m sorry, PKing isn’t a good reason to keep Bonino in the lineup

I wouldn’t want him in my top 9.

If you can move Goodrow and commit to not playing Bonino? Fine. Other than that, no thanks.

Ok but do you seriously think the coach is going to take out his number one most trusted guy on the PK? It's illogical to think so.

Will Cuylle has 0:00 PK TOI in 37 career games. Why would you assume they would start using him there? Chytile has 13.5 PK mins in his career. That's not going to happen.

If you want to replace Bonino you need to be looking for guys who play the similar role but are better. Not guys who play an entirely different position. Here are some guys of varying quality and cost that could be available: Bjugstad, Girgensons, Evans, Eller, Acciari, Sundqvist, Dowd, Kuraly.

Robertson getting a twirl in one of these games might not be a bad idea. Again, get a look at someone. He's the #5 LD organizationly.

Idk if Laviolette has done 11 and 7 before but it might be a decent idea at some point.
