We have young bottom 6 , borderline middle 6 players on the way

I don’t give them up unless it’s for a very good longer term solution.

They are pivotal to keep in a hard capped league and staying competitive imo.

Not to be dismissed either is the fact that guys like Sykora, Berard, Edstrom, Rempe, Cuylle and others will allow Drury to play more in the UFA market. He can go out and sign a Hanifin or Forsling this off-season knowing he has good, inexpensive depth options coming. The team shouldn't need to go out and sign a Goodrow or Hathaway, or someone like that and pay them ~$1-2m more than a young player will be making. That adds up

If Sykora and Berard are kept and we don't pawn them out for a rental.

Jamie Drysdale left the game yesterday and it was listed as upper body.
Cal Peterson has shown this year that he is not capable of playing in the NHL, even as a backup.
Trade Proposal:
To Flyers- Zac Jones and Louie Domingue
To Rangers- Nick Sellers and 2024 7th round pick

Shoutout to GAGLline

I like Seeler. Physical guy who can defend. I think we desperately need that element on D. A stay at home guy with size who can keep teams away from Igor. I see that as our biggest weakness. Every team gives up odd man chances. Im worried about the Dzone play. Yes, the forwards need to get back but our guys are not strong enough (Lindgren/Gus) or not consistent enough (Trouba/Miller). Foxy and Schneider have easily been our 2 best D this year and they actualy do a good job keep guys to the outside and away from the blue paint. I know people hate Edmundson/Seeler types but we need a guy like that.

2022 Drury brought in some more under the radar guys, Copp, Vatrano, Braun... Copp did cost a lot. The other 2 were bargain bins. In terms of cost/benefit Vatrano brought a ton to the table for what we got him for. We just missed a cup appearance.

2023 Drury goes for the big fish, they crash and burn. The big names didn't work out. 2 years in a row they gave up a decent chunk at the deadline.

There's so much randomness that the cost/benefit doesn't add up. Vatrano produced at a rate of a c*** hair below Tarasenko. He carried that over in the playoffs. One cost a 4th round pick, the other went in a package that cost a first round +.

You can improve the team without selling the farm. Drury has traded a number of picks away. He should be in the bargain bin looking to fill these spots. Roslovic, Kerfoot, Bjugstad, Duclair, Barabanov, Kubalík, Tatar, Texier, Olofsson, etc... some of those guys will cost a mid to late round pick, the better ones you dangle Zac Jones and some of the less prominent prospects in a deal

We have a legit chance to win the cup, and nobody here wants to part with anything to fill the holes we need to get better.
Correct, we don't want to trade our future away to add players who barely do anything to move the needle. Let Drury figure out a way to get a couple players by using our 2nd, and lower level prospects like Robertson.

yeah, it is tempting to say 'add'
but
no
odds are it is not gonna be smart/worthwhile

also, remember having ample picks is how, come draft day, you bundle and trade up to get a better prospect [KAM, etc]
let's stop pissing them away

smart move now is bring up Othmann, Berard
play twin towers
roll dice on Vesey deal if return high enuf
I've been saying hold onto the picks the last couple years but at some point before Panarin drops off we need to go for it. This appears to be that year. No way I'm dealing Vesey, he's probably the best value deal in the league. I'm against moving young roster players or Othmann and Perrault.

Our first is as close to a 2nd rounder as it gets.

The team isn't missing a major component though and you have to look at roles. The player being brought in isn't going to be on PP1. That's solidified. The PK is already very good so there isn't really a need to bring some elite PKer to fix that issue. You're going to be looking at a player who, predominantly, needs to be able to produce at 5v5 and the Rangers should be paying for such as player as such.

Getting a guy who has 50 points right now with 40 points scored on the PP will not improve the team because he won't produce in the role he is going to be looked at to play here. That same 50 point player would cost a 1st + but wouldn't move the needle much in terms of the on ice product.

The Rangers could use a 3C. Push Brodzinski down. The issue is paying for guys who play A LOT MORE minutes than what they will be seeing here and who will not be seeing any PP time like they were on their non-contending teams.

Because nobody is convinced this team has a chance to win the Cup.

Oh stop it. They just won 10 in a row with Igor rounding into form. We have as good a shot as anyone in the East and have beaten Colorado and Dallas recently.

I do think the most +EV path to take is to capitalize on teams trying to get anything for their rentals in a buyers market. If you can add guys like Zucker/Wennberg for a couple 3rd or 4th round picks, I think you do it. Id also look out for a trade in which Jones is moved for a bigger more veteran guy to be the 6/7. Jones has been a good sport and I personally like him a lot but hes blocked here. He'd need to hit waivers with any move on D and that second year gives him value. I think we will get more than expected for him.

I feel pretty confident in a roster like that.

How many times have we won the cup after trading away prospects and draft picks at the deadline? Once, by my count, and while no one can claim that we wouldn't have won without those moves, I think everyone would agree that those moves shortened our window to compete.

At some point, we have to realize that the strategy rarely works and try something different. That's not to say that we should make no moves, but we shouldn't always be advocating for the biggest, most obvious and most expensive upgrades. Anyone can throw money at a problem. Anyone can recognize the players who produce the most. Smart teams identify players who aren't necessarily the most productive or expensive, but who fit what the team needs.

This is a cap league. That means that the more production you can get out of less cap space, the better your team will be. We should be trying to acquire players that provide high value for low cost, rather than players who cost a lot and probably won't provide commensurate value.

Can someone do me a favor and post Scott Laughton's graphs from this year and the past 2 years?

I've watched him a bit this year and he always seems to be a high energy guy but his chart this year looks bad. His stats this year, for whatever reason look bad. I'm curious if that was the same last year or the year prior or if something was going on in the first part of this year

You feel confident in a roster that's burying Lindgren-Trouba as a third pairing. You know what? So do I.

You know what else? That's never happening.

The top 4 is THE problem. It's two pairs, taking up like 45-50 minutes of ice time, that get clowned almost every shift. Trouba isn't an NHL player right now. Lindgren is so bad that this partner is in the 90th+ percentile at literally everything and the pair still gets destroyed.

This is worse than Girardi and Staal. Before Girardi and Staal got super old, when those teams were competitive, you could put those two with a good partner and the pair was good. Lindgren and Trouba are destroying pairs and Lindgren has the best partner in the league.

All the indications we have are that the Rangers love the defense and aren't touching it.

He has played really well but he is Flyer through and through. I dont doubt Philly will sell around the periphery but i think he would take an overpay none of us are comfortable with. Dare I say Goodrow has picked up his game with Rempstrom? We need C depth but if we can hide Goodrow being a pest and winning faceoff's between the 2 giraffes, I think they go the cheap route at 3C with Brodz as the next man up.

I'm good with that approach, I was mainly just curious about what his past years have looked like.

Here, have three years of Laughton just because I'm in a bad mood and I want to spread the carnage.

He's usually not as a bad as he is this year, and I think Torts feeds into his worst habits, but he was never good.

I went off about this the other day: Laughton is a high-energy guy and he's very noticeable. He makes some impact plays and people notice him making impact plays.

The problem is that he runs around the ice like a Roomba and has never been in position in his career.

Trouba has single-digit numbers for the same reason. It's like five guys versus four guys and wherever Trouba feels like running. Imagine if we got Laughton and they played at the same time. It would be pretty close to killing a penalty at 5v5.

Laviolette has thrown the D pairs into a blender a few times in games and at practice, but nothing has stuck for long. I think they need another option thats more defense first, and you are right, the coaching staff needs to realize this. Trouba and Miller should not be giving up the blue line this easily. They are both 6'4 220. Too soft on their man and lackadaisical with their passes. That being said they had been better recently imo.

I do not expect it at all but if Drury wanted to send a message to the team that shit's real, he would deal Lindgren for a clear upgrade. I wouldnt hate it but the locker room chemistry would be a factor.

We have a legit chance to win the cup, and nobody here wants to part with anything to fill the holes we need to get better.
Is it legit though? This is reminiscent of the "YOU ARE YOUR RECORD" arguments from the 2012 team which also had the best record in the EC (and ironically enough Vancouver was the best in the West and won the presidents) but many of us argued weren't good enough to win the 'Cup without Lundqvist going absolute god mode. They had two grueling series against Ottawa and Washington, particularly the Ottawa series was bad. This team is on track for the same fate. they may squeak through 2 rounds but if they do it's likely they get smoked in the ECF. Spending any significant assets will likely be throwing them in the trash because I don't think this team is one piece away from having the depth for the playoffs, it's closer to 3. Can Drury fill three holes with good players without selling the farm? I wouldn't spend anything other than mid-late round picks and expendable prospects like Jones trying to find value players that aren't the big fish, but could be enough to make them more competitive.

Drury is likely adding C, RW and depth D at the deadline. I want to see Edstrom stay on the 4th line with Goodrow and Vesey. Brodz can be the 13F and Rempe can go back to playing 14 minutes in Hartford.

The 4th line goals the past two games are the type that win tight playoff games. The size speed and crease crashing will make a difference

How many time has any team won the cup after trading away assets and draft picks?! This is a ridiculous point only one team wins the cup every year.

Can you do Eberle and Gourde's 3 year charts as well?

When you get time that is.

Big Ed has been lost in the shuffle with Rempe getting the deserved headlines. His is a horse. Remninds me of a poor man's Franzen.
