He can fix the position but I don’t think he’d be able to get those two to play better. There’s a difference between these two things. For example Vatrano helped fix the position and complement Kreider and Zibanejad who were already playing well.
Yea i mean it wont feel great but this is an acquired package that could put you ahead of the pack of contenders. And this is where we are at with the holes we have. Not all of these prospects will be able to play here, just not enough spots.
Laughton has been in the league 10 years. One doesn’t need fancy stats to know that he is having an off season this year but for the last several years has been a reliable and valued checking center. He would fill a very specific role on this team. He is also affordable for this and next year, probably taking Goodrow s money next year. Laughton is versatile and has moved up to the Flyers top six many times in past years.
He is a perfect example of where a long term eye test trumps short term analytics.

Kreider is fine, Zibanejad is horrible but I think even he would start playing well with two serious play drivers on his wings.
the long term analytics aren't good either and no one should really trust your eyes.
Although I like Laughton (a lot) I think the priority here is someone who can slot in with Mika and Kreider. Unless Seattle tanks, I think Eberle is a pipe dream and Guentzel is just too expensive. I suspect the Rangers have probably identified someone in their price range who may be a little under our radar.

This spring will be fun. This is a bit black and white thinking but at the end I only see two outcomes. Either this group raises a cup or Drury will trade a core piece next summer.

I think ideally you find someone that will be able to slot in the 3C spot (I think Wenneberg would be best here and not cost anything crazy).
Then you look to add a depth D, I like Steeler here.
Then as Bobbop calls out, someone to slot next to Zib on the RW. I think that is going to be the most difficult piece if adding a rental. The 2 major pieces would likely be too costly (Eberle/Guentzal) and the rest is just meh. Would love to identify someone on the younger side that is still under team control control for another 2-3 seasons (ie could be an rfa after this season for example). It's a rare trade at the TDL but it has happened.
Then you can have Vesey on the 4th line and add depth in case of injuries.

Panarin - Trocheck - Laff
Cuylle - Wenneberg - Kakko
Goodrow - Edstrom - Vesey
Brodz/Rempe
The one thing to call out here is every "contender" has some major warts. There isn't a clear favorite currently. That has to do with years of a flat cap impacting team depth.

Unfortunately I feel like only an Eberle move nudges this team towards contention but that still leaves the Trouba issue.
FYI giving up 40 shots for 5 consecutive games is worse than it sounds. The record is 7 games.

It's all so tiresome
I am a proponent of them adding, even if I think they aren't good enough for all the reasons you mentioned, as well as the fact that this core group is only heading further into their 30s and this is potentially their last chance to make a run. I'm just not on board with the idea that this team is anything close to a favorite or just as likely to win as any other team. They still could fluke their way to the conference finals like they did a couple years ago which was a fun ride I just don't expect anything more than that.

The problem with moving him is that we then need someone to replace him. I'd rather just keep him and fill the other spots cheaply.

I had Othmann last week, but for some reason, today, I'm leaning Cuylle. For me it's REALLY a tough call.
It would be Othmann. Cuylle has shown he can be a middle six NHL winger. Othmann is unproven . But the player acquired CANNOT be a rental. Has to be someone with some term to give up Cuylle or Othmann because both are more valuable right now then giving up next year’s 1st Round pick.
