Yeah, we don't have as many assets as people think.

We can't really afford to do a lot of 2-for-1s or 3-for-1s anymore. We might have one big move left but then we will be hurting elsewhere. As much as people don't want to hear it, we stopped the talent acquisition phase too early, simply put, and even setting that aside, the Copp, Tarasenko, and Kane rentals were just terrible ideas and terrible values for us. We could really use another 3-4 good prospects right now.

They simply cannot buy this deadline. Yeah, they have talent. But most of that talent isn't at their "last chance," moment quite yet. At the same time, it's not so painstakingly close to winning it all that they just have to try to insulate themselves. They are one of the best 8 or so teams and they could win or lose any round, but you don't throw assets away on a toss-up.

They need to get their youth some experience down the stretch and try to feed minutes to Lafreniere, Kakko, Cuylle, Berard, Othmann, Rempe and Edstrom. Losing Chytil this year really killed them. They would need to go on a legit miracle run without a real 3C. They won't have the firepower at 5v5 in the playoffs - they never did before, they definitely won't now without a real 3C. It would have been nice to have another young center they could have inserted but they don't listen to me or they would have had one or two.

They need to move out Trouba and Goodrow in the offseason at any cost. They have to get out of those salaries. We can table the "is Trouba actually an NHL defenseman," talk but whether he is or isn't, he's too expensive. We can get 2-3 guys who are better than him for his salary. I'm also open to moving Lindgren if he can bring back a package for a long term piece. He has had a very bad year but his prior years were measurably better.

In an ideal world, with the cap going up slightly, you pawn Goodrow off on someone for free (ie, you don't have to pay assets for someone to take him), you trick someone who thinks they need size into paying you a first for Trouba, and Lindgren is swapped for a young center.

Perrault probably isn't ready for next year yet. With Goodrow, and probably Pitlick and Vesey gone, you are looking at

Kreider Zibanejad Kakko
Panarin Trocheck Lafreniere
Cuylle Young Center Othmann
Bottom line some makeup of Brodzinski, Rempe, Edstrom, Berard, journeyman grinder

If Chytil comes back, Cuylle can play bottom line.

Then you use whatever assets you have to go get a top pair defender. Let's say you can use the first you got for Trouba to package for Chychrun (just an example).

Chychrun - Fox
Miller - Schneider
Gustaffson, Robertson, Jones, cheap UDFA
Vesey is signed through next year for 800k. He's not going anywhere. I agree about Trouba and especially Goodrow.

Worked so well last time 🥸
I'm not necessarily advocating for it, but it's a logical solution to a problem.

You can add him at 100%, Hanifin at 50%, and Dowd at 50% and make it all fit. Someone like Pacioretty instead of Dowd wouldn't even require retention.

Again, do I want that? Probably not. But it's not terrible asset management if Kane and Dowd/Pacioretty don't cost anything more than a 2nd and other later picks. If Hanifin costs a 1st + Robertson but ends up signing, that's well worth the 1st.

Why are we punting off on this season when we are comfortably in first in a bad Metro/Eastern conference, just to make the moves people have suggested we make now, in the summer? That doesnt make sense. You can try to move Goodrow Trouba and Lindgren in the summer, and still add the necessary pieces now. Panarin is playing the best hockey of his career. No future draft pick is contributing for the Rangers before his contract is up. Watch the pregame addresses to the team yesterday. The Stanley Cup is the goal this year, not the Entry Draft

Why do you always trade laf? Jesus man

Watching yesterday's game, which was a playoff type game, what popped out at me was who stood out most of the game. Trocheck & Laf were making things happen all game, especially 5V5. What do they have in common? They play hard, physical and take the body, unlike Mika, Panarin and even Kreider, who produce mostly on the PP.
That's why I'm saying that Drury is NOT going to give up prime assets for perimiter players, who will not sniff the dirty areas of the ice during the playoffs. They will focus on guys like Jenner, Dowd, Gourde (small guy, big motor). On D, I wouldn't be surprised if they look to add someone like Gudbranson from CLB, if they retain 50%, or Edmunson from the Capitals.

If Drury wants to make a splash then trade for Hanifan and re-sign him. It's a move for now and the future and perhaps giving him that 8th year would allow for a lower cap hit overall. There are benefits there.

If he's just going to look at rentals then I'm going lower end guys and working around the edges of the roster.

If I were Drury I would be approaching Gustafsson about re-signing and if he doesn't want to, then Jones has to be kept. If he will re-sign at a reasonable number, Jones becomes a piece I dangle for another piece.

Was happy to see Rempe up, but you have to wonder what happened when Othmann was called up last time to not have given him this shot.
I think it was more about wanting to slot in a bigger, more physical player against the Islanders. There was no point in putting Othmann in a 4th line role. Belzile is up and they didn't play him either.
Ya, I'm the biggest proponent of keeping the kids in the ahl but i think he's earned a little stretch to see if we actually need to aquire a top 9 winger at the deadline. A nice little 5 game stretch would be nice to see.
He's already played a few games. I think they saw what they needed to see from that, which is pretty much what we see in the AHL. He isn't consistent enough yet and isn't impacting the game enough yet at 5 on 5. He has 13 goals on the year and 8 of them are on the PP.

If anyone deserves a look for that spot, it's Berard.

prob w/bold is it costs, too much in long term

Yeah Gus is fine but if he wants 4-5 like its been reported he can kick rocks and we can scoop him up when he is still unsigned in August if we want lol. I want to see more of Jones regardless. He is younger and has more upside. I understand if they move him for win now help but i think he is going to end up a good and useful player here or wherever he ends up.

I’m torn about Berard. He has earned a look but is it what is best for him. Yes, he drives play and is defensively responsible but he is also a tenacious player and it’s that tenacious part that worries me.
Is he physically ready to complete in the NHL?

Jenner would require a stupid overpay, Gourde and Dowd to a lesser extent. On D, unless our goal is to ensure we're out in the first round, we should be avoiding guys like Gudbrandson or Edmundson (specifically, players that suck)

Hanifin would immediately be the 2nd best dman on this team by a mile. He is the best player on the ice for the Flames almost every game and he logs a ton of minutes. Offensively he scores almost as much as Laf and only Trouba has more blocks than him from D on this team.

Guy just turned 27. Rangers are not getting another opportunity to land a dman of his caliber at this stage of his career. Make the trade and recoup some assets trading lindgren or include him in the deal to lower the cost.

Find a player on D who is the ideal version of Edmundson or Gud. A big guy who can keep the opposing team away from the front of the net. Our D is looking to go too much we need a stay at home guy who can make a first pass.

The wear has affected Lindgren this year. He is a step slow and isn’t hitting as hard as he used to. He’s fine on the 3rd park as a PK guy but Fox is drowning with him long term. Hanifin is the highest end guy out there. The Devils want him too and part of me would enjoy screwing them, but I’m not limited to him as an option. In the offseason if Pesce is capable of playing the left side I’d be all over it. It already worked once with Trocheck and he’s a New York that’s tight with Kreider.

A 2025 1st and Robertson or Jones makes a ton of sense for both sides. Hanifin is an east coast Boston guy so he’ll fit right in here.

How many assets will be left? This same plan again next March? A team can't keep making these moves year after year after year.

I think so. The AHL is pretty similar to the NHL as far as physicality. Berard spent 3 years in college and now most of a year in the AHL to prepare himself for that grind. And I imagine he has been on the smaller side most of his life, so he has learned how to protect himself against bigger players.

The tenacious part is what makes me think he can be an asset at the NHL level. A lower center of gravity, quickness and agility, and his willingness to battle could really help. He's kind of like Zucc. Not as dynamic, but Zucc won way more board battles than he lost simply because he understands how to beat bigger players. Berard has that, I think.

Bingo.

And this is why with the Wheeler injury, Tarasenko remains as relevant as ever. I think you end up with 3 balanced lines - 1A, 1B, and 1C if you pull the trigger on that move, but you have to break up the bromance.

In no particular order:
Panarin-Trocheck-Laf
Kreider-Pinto/Greig-Tarasenko
Cuylle-Zibanejad-Kakko
Edstrom-Brodzinski-Vesey

Berard, Goodrow, and a non-firstrounder to Ottawa for Tarasenko and Pinto or Greig.

The mistake with Tarasenko last year was in his utilization. 21 points in 31 games playing almost exclusively on PP2 (and he scored in one of the few games he played on PP1), <16 minutes a game. That's a 42 even strength point pace, and a lot of that was playing with Kreider and Zibanejad where he wasn't really a fit with the rush offense they try. With better usage/linemates, his numbers are far better.

And the mistake of that deal was not keeping Tarasenko OR Mikkola. Goodrow at 3.6 this year is an albatross, and moving him would have freed up a ton of room. I was crucified for suggesting that last year was a good time to move Lindgren, and now we're stuck with a declining defender who continues to be overutilized who is viewed as a "good in the room" guy who will probably become the next albatross contract. If you could trade Lindgren for Mikkola at 2.5M RIGHT NOW, I'm pretty sure you'd do it.

Moving on from those two (and keeping Mikkola at 2.5AAV) would have freed up 4.1 million in cap, assuming no retention. Tarasenko signed for 1/5, and by all accounts he enjoyed his time in NY so he could've been kept for a similar amount/they could have found some cap somewhere else (not signing Wheeler brings total savings up to 4.9 vs. 5M expense and you have Mikkola instead of Lindgren), and then possibly the team negotiates the Chytil and Miller contracts slightly differently to get the last 100K+.

That deal didn't have to be a rental.

I think Berard is a good prospect, but I think Othmann, Sykora, and Perreault are better.

We are heavy on wings coming up through the system, and I don't think there's going to be room for him here. Panarin is signed two more years. Kreider shouldn't be moved, because he gives you something unique. Laf is future top line, if you don't consider him basically there now. Kakko needs a place to play. The three prospects above need a place to play.

You have to move someone, and Berard isn't going to be very impactful buried on the fourth line.

He's young, and you can get more for him now than you can if you wait until he's 23 and has to clear waivers, and you panic and make a deal for a mid round pick at the end of camp because he didn't make the team and you don't want to lose him for nothing, or you let him languish on the 4th line.

Now, if you feel that Berard is a better prospect than Othmann, Sykora, or Perreault, then feel free to trade one of them (or Kakko) instead for the right piece and throw Berard into a future top 9.

But if the Rangers continue to hoard wingers while lacking for D and centers, they're going to end up regretting it in a few years.

I think you're selling Berard short. IMO, he's more NHL-ready right now than Othmann, though I think Othmann has the higher ceiling. Sykora and Perreault are further away from the NHL and, assuming both become NHL players, the team could look quite different by the time they are ready.

I'm not completely opposed to moving Berard, but we have to be getting a long-term piece back. You addressed this in your other post:

Berard, Goodrow, and a non-firstrounder to Ottawa for Tarasenko and Pinto or Greig.
Unfortunately, there's no chance of Ottawa agreeing to that. A cap dump with 3 years left, Berard, and non-1st round pick doesn't get us either Pinto or Greig, never mind adding Tarasenko.

Plus, Goodrow has a 15-team NTC and I'd imagine Ottawa is on it.
