6x9 for Tavares is not a reasonable contract. You really think he's going to get less years than Kuznetsov/RyJo and only 1M more? I would be absolutely shocked if hes not between 10.5 and 12.5 (Kopitar/Toews contract and McDavid) provided it's not a hometown Islander discount deal.

If he is still an elite player next season I would try for 6 years at 10 mill by selling him on the notion that at 33 he will be young enough to get another significant contract. See if he takes that bait :D

The Islanders have shown how desperate they are to sign Tavares. They're doing their best to impress him by making roster upgrades, arena possibilities, and prospective future success etc. They're going to show him the money as well. He can get UFA bidding war money from the Islanders if he wants it. I'm sure he can get $11M/8yrs if he wants it.

Sometimes money is not everything. Would you want to waste your career as a Islander? Some in the media insisted Shatty would get at least a 49 mill deal. He ended up signing with us for a fraction of that.

I think we're a little biased in thinking careers are "wasted" with the Islanders though NYI management are trying to make moves to convince Tavares of just that so perhaps there is some truth in that. I think it's an interesting spot they're in. They sucked for the first few years of Tavares's career, then they were the hockey sweet heart and up and comers. Then they fell back into a borderline team with all the terrible coaching they had. If the year doesn't go well under Doug Weight, I think it'll severely damage NYI's chances of retaining Tavares. The dream of being an up and coming team has already been... used. Try convincing Avalanche fans that their future is bright after they HAD the dream team of top picks.

You may have a point. Everyone's view is their own. What I see as wasted JT may see as the place he wants to be above all others. I look at JT like any big name player. We do our homework. We make a reasonable to us pitch. If that pitch is not enough we move on. We should not chase the bid to throw in a stock market phrase. :)

Do we have any connections to JT? Like hayes and vesey? Shatty wants to play here and took a discount....if that could start a movement of players wanting to sacrifice:rangers:m-dance::m-dance::laugh: cash to make a dream team in the garden.

If JT looks near an elite level and will sign a reasonable contract (not 10 years) you do it and then work down. We can find the room if need be next summer.

The Isles, Nets, and to a degree the Mets have always been the redheaded stepchild in NY. If he could move to a better situation why not do it? Pat Lafontaine played for all 3 NY hockey clubs. Cone, Gooden and Strawberry won world series with both the Mets and the Yankees.

If he is slowing down that is a different story. We do not want a guy that will decline fast. We will have to monitor that situation.

I would pass. Would prefer to only have players with some kind of loyalty. It's like if we finally got a No 1 pick that we couldn't keep for cap reasons, why on earth should that player choose to go to New Jersey with great offers from 20 other teams? We are one of many top destinations, not the only one... Tavares will get great offers from other franchises, if he chooses to go here it does prove IMO that he is a bit of a *** hole. JMO.

I'm huge on loyalty in sports and in general but how can we speak about loyalty from players when we have 1000 posts a week on players we should trade including some that took discounted deals to be here?

Just have to hope some team out there is offering Gorton an overpriced but good center for a value Holden+prospect+2nd pick package that would force Gorton to buyout Staal in the 11th hour.

I don't know why any of you think Tavares is coming here. Even remotely.

If he doesn't stick with the Isles no one would blame him. It's not to go to a direct division rival right next door. If he hits UFA many teams will be after him offering the same amount of money we could. Why come here? Other than loving NYC so much he's unwilling to be further than 1.5 hours away there's no chance he's a Ranger, Flyer, or Devil if he decides to go elsewhere. None. So many reasons for this. Just think about it a little.

edit: Also, don't know where to put this but between Brooks and Borges, I'm so down and done with NYR media. I can't stand it. Terrible. Cerny was weird and corny at times but genuine and passionate. Borges is just... I can't even describe it. Nothing to do with being a woman. I'm zero sexist. She's just fake. Or appears fake. I cannot watch interviews with her. I'd cringe with Cerny occasionally but I'd watch. Now I just skip it all.

Hire one of us. Too bad I no longer live in NYC.

Staal isn't really the problem. Every team has some useless **** on their third pair.

The problem is AV using Staal.

The problem is AV is the answer like 90% of the time.

Were Brian Leetch and Mark Messier boyhood heroes of Jonn Tavares too?

Even if he wanted to stay in N.Y. and took a bit less to do so, say $9MM AAV, Rangers would have to move someone out likely. They have $51.6MM committed to 11 players and have to resign Skjei, Miller, Hayes and Vesey.

If the cap went up to say $78MM next season, they would have to sign 11 players with about $25MM in cap space. If you buyout Staal I believe if I remember right that saves about $3MM, so $28MM in cap space, need to sign 12 players and operate the team.

I think they go 4 years on Skjei because I believe if he signs 5 it will take him right to UFA. I may be off a year. Would 4x4 be fair? Down to 24MM.

Miller will cost around Zbad, say 5x5 to keep the numbers round. 19MM.

Sign Tavares to 6x9. 10MM with 9 more players to sign.

Unless Vesey has a break out year 2x3 will be a good number for him. 7MM left.

Hayes should get less the Miller, say 5x4. 3MM left for 7 players.

Not going to work out. Unless they sell high on Miller or Hayes of they feel Andersson will be ready for a top 9 center role in 2018-19. Or move out a Zucc before the last year of his deal. Even then the numbers likely wouldn't work out.

Skjei? He is 3 years away from group III. Slavin? Parayko? $4M is not even close. Vesey is two years away from group III. The Rangers aren't signing him to a contract which takes him directly to group III.

I wasn't saying that is what they are going to go for, just showing there is no way the Rangers could afford to sign Tavares without moving out current roster players.

I think there is a pretty decent chance that Tavares doesn't re-sign with the Islanders. The main reason being he doesn't see his team capable of winning a cup would be more to do with the direction that the Islanders management is taking with the team. Personally I don't see enough there--the goaltending is kind of mediocre in an average way--the defense is unspectacular and IMO will be worse with the loss of Hamonic--there are a bunch of good forwards but apart from himself there is no legit first line players. So I think he 'might' (operative word) decide to take his career to another city.

That said I'm not sure the Rangers would be his first choice as far as destination. I'm kind of thinking more like his home town--Toronto. I think the Leafs could find the cap space--though they would have to move some pieces when some of their ELC's turned into second contracts. A young up and coming team with elite quality forwards.

The Rangers have enough room to re-sign their own players and fill out the roster. All of their group II next summer are close to group III. A long term contract will include group III years. Gorton is not Sather. He is not interested in long term contracts. Stamkos was supposed to be a Ranger last summer.
