If Bennett is indeed in play, then you have to ask yourself why that is the case.

CGY raved about him when getting him, but last year showed that they may not be worth the pick.

Bennet could very well be another kid that played a rough and tumble style in juniors that lead to his success at the Major Junior level, but he could be a guy that doesn't mature physically and that hinders him when playing in the men's league.

I wouldn't trade for him if a lack of athleticism is the case... he won't be more than a middle six winger if those are the challenges that he faces. He doesn't have the speed or skill of Johnny Hockey... he's nowhere near that type of player.

The notion that AV will not play younger guys is false. Like most coaches he will play both young and old guys largely based on their actual play on the ice not based only by their age. He has benched players that are old and players that are young. He benched Brad Richards. He benched Dan Boyle. Part of coaching inexperienced guys in the NHL is sitting them when they make defensive mistakes. Its not about hurting them. Its about making them become better players. CK and JT were benched or demoted during games when they were screwing up defensively. So was Hayes. So was Brady. So was Oscar. If AV will not play younger players than CK, JT, and Hayes never would have scored 50 points last season. They would have been traded years ago.

Good post.

And I think it's very fair to point out that we have an amazing track record of developing kids while AV has been here. I think many forget how often young talent just don't even remotely get to where they should. But besides Grachev and McIlrath every single kid we had in the system almost has really done well for us.

Then it can of course be discussed how much of his is attributable to AV. And how much is attributable to having a good organization as a whole, great lockerrom, peer pressure, good kids to start with and so forth and so forth. BUT the starting point in discussions that it should be expected that AV is horrible and will ruin kids "as usual" is certainly kind of odd.

I agree on Bennet. To some extent, I also think this is a matter of the stars just not aligning for the best development of kids in the Hockey Canada system. All systems have ups and downs, historically so have Canada regularly. Sometimes many of the better young kids are like Jason Bosignore, Dan Tkachuck and Jamie Lundmark caliber, at other times mid prospects become like Getzlafs and Perrys at worst it seems like. When seing the Reinhart and Strome brothers, Lazard and Virtanens, Bennet and co match up against European competition they have just not even remotely been as downright dominant as Canadian U20 teams are, this entire group has honestly been among the worst I've ever seen for Canada over a few years. I am a bit colored from living through the 21-0 stretch and a ton of gold before and after that when Sweden like where lucky to only lose 5-1, but many of these guys just haven't been up there. If you look at bigger sample sizes, there should be a handful of players -- per age group -- that becomes like top line forwards in the league. Another handful who become second lineers. It just don't take that much for a high pick to fall out of that group of the system he was coming from just didn't give him very good conditions to succeed at the moment.

I don't have a good grasp of Bennet, I like his playmaking ability but also am not blown away by his overal game. Easily become very bleak in games. Kind of like the Strome NYI moved. Think he would be too expensive for what he is worth.

No clear #1 center in 2014. Were some bad bounces and misfortunes away from having a commanding lead in the SCF. They were in every game.

But i mean sure theres just simply no way they can win...

Kings won because they had better center depth as well. They had 3 centers better than our #2C. And the Rangers haven't had centers as good as Kopitar/Carter in decades.

Is not deAngelo quite solid defensively especially for a guy who is supposed to be big offensive weapon?

Let me go over this one more time. deAngelo is 21. He needs a lot of development. Some of that development may come in the AHL. He is nowhere near polished defensively and his offensive game, while much more advanced, is still a work in progress. He got third pair minutes on a real bad team last year and that team was willing to trade him. (and BTW, the Coyotes have little in the way of defensive prospects.)

He's a defenseman. They don't all come at the same rate and some don't develop until their mid 20's.

I think he has a chance to be a pretty good player but he is not top four ready and playing on the third pair with Staal may not be the best route for his development.

I think HFNYR isn't excited enough about seeing Ryan McDonagh unshackled from Dan Girardi. There is no model capable of predicting the possible outcomes. The net + of having two complete, un****ed, and capable top 4 pairings is something we haven't seen in years.

Random tidbit.

Kinkaid reached out to the Rangers - the Rangers said no thanks. Sad face.

Pavelec is a better option though.

Agreed. Being able to watch McDonagh Unchained will be fun, especially if paired with Shattenkirk most of the time.

So happy NYR chose Pavelec over Kinkaid, Pavelec has atleast had good seasons and has shown upside, Kinkaid never has.

I'm aware. I just like Kinkaid as a person. Would have been fun to see him do well here. That said, no lost sleep haha we will win more games with Pav.

I'd be more excited if Staal wasn't still......a thing.

Not trading 23 second rounders plus, but...some crazy thoughts

Last night I had the Strangest dream...

Trades
Number One - Marc Staal, Ryan Graves (or eventually Sean Day) and NYR 3rd round pick (2019) for Evander Kane and Buffalos 7th round pick (2020). You could add one of Wall or Huska here as well (if necessary). Ok, I am desperate, include the NHL rights to Niklas Jensen and the NHL rights to Carl Klingberg too if you want to. Staal must go!

Number Two - Nick Holden, Adam Chapie and NYR 2nd round pick (2019) sent to Toronto for Tyler Bozak (50% retained), Joffrey Lupul and the TML 7th round pick (2018)

Signings
Sign M Zinbad Five years @ $4,9M. Tough luck halfBro...
Lias Andersson gets to show what he has in camp
He can then also play 9 NHL games and thereafter (likely) get sent back to Frölunda this season - thereby not burning a year on his ELC
Contract of Malte Strömwall is mutually cancelled and nullified
2 guys will likely also have their contracts slide. One of them is Chytil
Other remaining signings as per below:
Younger, faster, better
Rebuilding on the fly
Lots of options
Have at it...

The NHL Network did a re-draft of the 2012 for D. So many quality D. EJ Hradek and Kevin Weekes. Both of them picked Slavin #1. EJ had Skjei at #5. Weekes had Skjei at #3 or #4. Trouba was his 5th. Parayko,Trouba and Lindholm were in the top 5 mix. They didn't post the link to the segment.

I think they're both very wrong :P

Lindholm easily #1, Parayko just as easily #2...
Then Trouba and Slavin... After that it's interesting, i'd have Ghost #5 then it's like super close between Skjei, Rielly, Dumba and probably a couple more.
