Now that the draft is over. We need to focus on the NHL roster. We have big holes to fill and Drury can't be overly cautious. He needs to be balanced in how he approaches this. If he's over conservative we won't improve and will take a step backwards. He needs to be proactive.

2C
backup G
RW
LD (Jones?)

So far, I like what I am hearing

No Strome
Avoiding Copp solely because his demands are too high
Holding firm on PLD and Miller stuff, not jumping the gun
Good value trade for Georgiev
Working towards a deal with Motte (identifying the right players to keep around)
Kakko bridge going smoothly
Othmann brought to the table for the draft, showing our commitment to him
Cuylle gonna compete for a spot out of camp

We haven't made a lot of moves, but it all sounds like the right stuff to me

If I am Drury, this is my game plan:

(a) Dangle Braden Schneider for a young C with speed. I love Schneider as much as anyone and think that he has a ton of potential. Facts are, in my world, that we need a young C with speed much more than we need a RD to play behind Fox and Trouba who aren't going anywhere.

Alex Newhook from Colorado?

(b) Move Filip Chytil. I really like a lot of things about Chytil, seems like a great kid. I think he will peak later in his 20s like Mika and he could become a good top 6 C.

But is he what we need? Speed at C has been the deciding factor in the POs for a long time, its what teams haven't been able to counter. We are big on the wing, we have so much skill on the wing. its always a balance act.

I would target someone like Robertson in Toronto. Relentless, strong on the puck, fits the bill to the T from my POV.

(c) Get a clutch speedy center to play with Panarin and build a match-up line of 'Panarin's line' (Jordan Staal centered a 'checking line', most match-up lines are puck hog lines, not checking lines).

Who would this be? Carl Järnkrok is available. He isn't the worst option.

(d) Lineup:
Kreider-Ziba-Kravy
Laf-Newhook-Kakko
Panarin-Järnkrok-Robertson
Reeves-Goodrow-Blais
Hunt
Lindgren-Fox
Miller-Trouba
Jones-Braun

(e) I like the above team. I feel comfortable that we are in better shape in 23/24 than this year or even last, with that team. It has potential if things come together, and players are put in position to do thrive. I Kravy is the one who fits with Kreider and Ziba. Newhook's speed and creativity at center ice is huge for Laf and Kakko, they need that playmaker at center that will draw attention, put Ds on their heels.

Some will feel that Panarin must be higher up the lineup. That is nonsense from my POV. He plays 2 min on the PP and the match-up line plays a lot 5 on 5. Kreider and Ziba will never be able to come out on top when they face the toughest match-ups. At best they will be "0-0".
Newhook played LW in the playoffs. They brought in Sturm as C since Newhook wasn't ready.

Chytil is no 2C, if that C spot is for Panarin. Panarin doesn't fit with Zib and Chytil is similar. Play the kids as a line and make another line around Panarin. Don't move Laf or Kreider to RW, that's square peg silliness. Chytil is limited perhaps, but he is at a good age to progress decisively (22-24) and good enough with the other kids.

If they do move Schneider, it's in a trade for a PLD type. Young proven C that is on his game right now and whose game should fit better with Panarin. JT Miller is too awkward to fit easily (age, contract) unless Vancouver accepts a deal cheap enough for a 1 year rental. Schneider is too valuable to move for that. Dach had terrible underlying numbers in Chicago. He probably landed in a good spot with MTL, with MSL there to get him back on track without win now pressure in the post-season.

If Motte isn’t back, go get me Michael Raffl
Get me both. Motte and Blais are both effective bottom 6 players, but both have their history of bumps and bruises. When fully healthy all 3 are capable of playing on a 3rd line role and being okay there.

"Things can change as the final hours approach, but Ryan Strome on the other hand appears headed elsewhere, even if Copp leaves as well. A league source said the Rangers and Strome have had no real contract talks since the regular season ended."

Sorry guys, sounds like Strome is gone.
Praise Allah.

Trade Schneider for “a young C with speed”.

Then trade the young C with speed we already have.

I think there’s an easier way.

I’m still holding out hope at signing Copp
I’m ok w moving Chyti for a cheaper C. Turcotte ?
Need someone to take Nemeth
They are also going to sign new cheap guys like Hunt

I hate to be the bearer of bad news... but Andrew Copp is about as good as it gets for our middle6C role. Letting him walk is not the play.

This is all negotiation. Both parties are trying to get the best prices.
Was thinking this too. Unless they can get Malkin on a shorter term for the same money. If Malkin wants to join the Rangers they can make it work. But Copp would be fine as well.

I’d just assume pass on both and go with the kids - re-signed for as long as reasonable - and save whatever cap they can for the trade deadline.

You want to pay him over 5 million? He isn’t really a center, isn’t really a top 6 forward and not a good skater? Not the answer for me.

Why commit long term salary that we need to somebody that is not going to be good enough in the playoffs for that role?

The bridge in this situation is 100% on Gorton.

Barely a year into the rebuild, he went out and spent huge on Panarin, which is going to end up going down as his biggest mistake. A little bit less than 2 years after the letter, they tied up more than a quarter of their cap in 3 players (Panarin, Trouba, Kreider.)

It's one thing if you're spending big on keeping guys while your competing, but they weren't even competitive and he's handing out massive contracts before this team even has a chance to mold into anything. It was dumb then and it's still dumb. It's the instant gratification that some here (and him, he did the same thing in Boston) that just can't be resisted for what ever reason. Now it didn't crush Boston in the long run as they won eventually and have stayed pretty competitive for over a decade so we can only hope for the same here, but all it really does it make your work harder for you, or in JG's case, for his successors at both spots.

The flat cap also doesn't help matters.
Those contracts look a lot better without Covid though. Especially Kreider and Trouba. I agree it was maybe a year too soon to spend but also GMs get their guys when their guys are available. I certainly agree the moves are questionable but I wouldn’t be too critical.

Strome is good at finding soft spots on the ice. But Chytil is faster, has shown he can actually play more physical game, and he can play more of a N/S game. Chytil is also significantly younger and might just take time to figure things out.
Strome definitely is a valuable player on some teams. Any team can afford to have a couple perimeter guys in the Top Six. But the rangers already have Panarin and Mika. This, Strome must be replaced with a guy who’ll occupy the slot area.

Everything else in the world has drastically increased except for the salary cap :(
