Correct. They could have wanted to create cap space, as well as wanted to move on from Stepan for the reasons I listed. Por que no los dos!

Without Stepan being traded, we'd only have ~$2M right now to sign ZBad (currently have ~$8.4M), which is not happening in the slightest and would require some other move.

Something had to give.

If all you were looking for is cap space, there were other players to trade than Stepan is all I'm saying.. I think the NTC kicking in, the fear in his game declining, etc were all more bigger reasons than cap space for Shattenkirk.

You do if you trade Holden.

But Gorton and Rangers definitely didnt think they would get Shatty for what they did

Not really.

Assuming our cap situation stays the same as it is right now (the Fast/Smith/DD/Pavs signings and Klein retiring), only minus Holden and plus Stepan, we'd be be sitting at ~$3.55M in cap space, which is not enough to re-sign Zibanejad.

Something had to give.

They also don't need DD either had they kept Stepan.

IF the Rangers REALLY wanted to keep Stepan and still get Shattenkirk they could have found a way. They didnt want to keep Stepan for whatever reason.

They needed a replacement at 4C. The difference between DD's $1M caphit and someone like Nieves/Andersson/etc is negligible. $1M compared to $755k doesn't really move the needle when you're sitting at $3.55M and ZBad is looking at ~$5M.

Problem remains.

I dont think Shattys salary cap hit is a dramatic discount. I felt the 4 years was what made the deal.

I don't believe the Step trade was all about cap room but I do think it was one of the factors they considered.

Beargloves will get a very good shot due to his out clause. If he's good to great in camp he's a lock for the roster I think. Yes he plays right, but he's a lefty and I'm guessing they can have him learn the left side. He's not a rookie, but he's a rookie to the NHL. So as much as I'd dream of having both him AND DeAngelo look great at camp and be on the roster, I don't see how AV puts them together. They'll have to split up the pairs we've all established in our minds:

McDonagh - Shattenkirk
Skjei - Smith

I think Bereglazov, assuming he does well, can slot up with either Skjei or Smith. Maybe run Smith with DeAngelo for a while. Move things around. Lots of versatility and a very mobile D corps.

We keep Staal or Holden (very likely Staal) and if he's being outplayed by kids, he's the 7th. But I think we'll see a lot of movement, both of guys in and out of the roster and with their precise location on the roster when playing, other than McD who will always be top left and Shattenkirk who will always be top PP.

I think it's a good problem to have. If Pionk impresses too, then it's even better. But he at least (and DeAngelo I think?) can be moved to the WP as needed. Camp will really help sort this out. I just think we need to move one of Staal or Holden. I can't see many (any) teams jumping for Staal but Holden has value at his price if used correctly. Hell, he has value for US if used correctly on the bottom pair with the right partner. He wouldn't be terrible to have next to a Bereglazov or DeAngelo coming in, either.

I'm far more concerned about obtaining another C. I think Bozak would be perfect given what's out there and possible. Might be tight to make it work financially but it's something I'd like to see. A top two of Zib and Bozak is something I'm comfortable with. Hayes as #3. Desharnais at 4. Plenty of wingers to move around, up and down, to find chemistry. Scoring depth. Still lacking a true top C but hey. Would be a fun year I think, and if we lose a C to injury at least we've got some insurance. Right now if Zib goes down, we're just in -really- bad shape.

ok, no worries, thanks. :)

How good is Anderson our 1 #7 pick - is he NHL ready? :)

Im cautiously optimistic about what I see from #7 but I can't say for sure till I see him play in NA. Im also looking forward to seeing D Angelo skate.

yeah I can`t wait - an exciting season ahead with training camp, Sam Rosen, the whole package! ;)

I don't hate the idea of trading for Bozak but what would it cost?
Buch-Zib-Kreider
Vesey-Bozak-Zucc
Miller-Hayes-Nash
Fast-Desharnais-Grabner

I'm sure I'm missing someone.

Nope you got all the forwards if they didn't have to give one up in the trade for Bozak.

Depending on the cost in all for it. There likely isn't a long term solution available via trade. Let the two kids just drafted develop more. I want to see Andersson work on his offensive side of the puck more. Take more chances.

Not the lines I had, but you've got 'em all =)

That's the beauty of it too, lots of depth and guys who can slot in many different places. Roll all 4 lines. Hank being normal Hank, or playoff Hank, and Pavelec being a decent backup, with a more mobile and efficient D... it's a good group. I wouldn't say top contending, but I wouldn't say bubble either. Without a center addition, we're 1-2 injuries away from bubble. Or missing the dance entirely.

Not a big deal, as I think next year is more important and will be better, but I'd prefer not to.

I think we can basically assume that Gorton would not go into matching any kind of top offers for Shatty. Hence Gorton was probably pretty pessimistic about getting him -- like Brooks was reporting.

It depends on the situation you're in. It's a good strategy, it just doesn't guarantee success.

Yeah, I couldn't agree more. Like nobody have even remotely ever before come close to tearing apart a team in a way that would require 10-15 trades and what not to even come close to getting a top lottery pick.

You need to be patient -- even in NY -- and follow the cycles of a team. We are in a strong cycle now, run it out and go all for it. Then eventually you will crash, it's in that situation you cannot hang on and try with patching things up etc and rebuilding properly definitely is the best option. Like Philly has missed the POs twice in a row, they should tank.

OT, but forgot to thank everyone that gave me tips etc in my now closed thread "Swedes traveling to NY".

Thanks ya'll! Really looking forward to my first trip to New York!

Yes, it`s important to keep the momentum - you can`t do a complete rebuild with the current Rangers team. I was worried before this summer, but so many good decisions by the org. and Gorton with who they decided to buy out or move and with the new players they acquired.

I'm holding out hope Staal moves

But Holden can't be worth a lot they got him for a 5th

Ideally the d is
McD, Shatty
Skjei, Smith
Holden , Deangelo/berezegalov
Call up graves , pionk, kampfer

Ideally move both Holden & Staal in my opinion - I hope Graves is ready for this year training camp.
