Carolina getting new ownership. Good for them because they have a great young core and the potential to be really damn good if they some financial backing.

Should be a playoff team this year.

Pens, Jackets, Caps, Canes and Rangers out of Metro.

Eh idk how much longer he'll hold up, but yeah he's a great driver in a secondary scoring role. He'll add a huge veteran boost to them too

Yup. Veteran leadership, wealth of experience and should/could pot 20.

It's possible Gorton doesn't have a plan in place already to move Staal but my thoughts are in line with RB. How do you sell guys like Bereglazov and Pionk, two of the higher end undrafted free agents on defense and not open up at past a spot for them? With the way DeAngelo is being talked about I think the 3rd pairing RD spot is his to lose. Gorton and AV have continually said the team will be younger next year.

Bereglazov would be a nice compliment to DeAngelo on the 3rd pairing. McDonagh is going to play a lot. Rotate him with DeAngelo from time to time. They can rotate Skjei with him too. Rotate Shattenkirk and Smith with Bereglazov from time to time as well. The team has 4 experienced blue liners.

Because I don't think they expected to sign Shattenkirk. He literally fell in their laps.

Gorton spoke about cap room when asked about why they made the Stepan trade. Who do you think he was targeting if Shatty wasn't in their original plans?

of course, but from all reports the Rangers didn't expect to land him, it was Shattenkirk himself who approached the Rangers to get a deal done and told them he would take less term to do it. who knows.

The Rangers still could have signed Shattenkirk to the same contract and kept Stepan if they wanted to.. I don't think trading Stepan opened up the space for Shattenkirk.

I do not think that was all reports. We had been rumored to be after him for a while and Gorton said as much in his interview. Most of the not interested at all in Shatty stuff came from one guy who even denied it after Weekes announced it. They probably kept their cards close to their vest to have Shatty come in on good terms. Kind of like not showing a lot of interest in a car you would like but at a low price. Gorton may have had hopes for other moves as well but I do think he also had an eye on what was happening with Shatty. I do not know if he would have traded Stepan with no plan at all for the cap room.

I think the Rangers just wanted to move on from Stepan because they thought he was going to decline soon and didn't want to have to deal with his NTC.

I don't think Gorton would say something like that to the media. So of course he's going to say something like "it gives us some cap space to make a move."

That's like...one of things that all GMs say whenever a big trade like this happens. They won't say their actual motives to the camera. Gorton won't tell the media "Yes, we traded Stepan because he's slow as hell and we don't want to deal with his NTC when it's likely that he declines even further."

No. GMs are going to say the obvious things in interviews. Much like AV is well-versed in "coach-speak," Gorton is well-versed in "GM-speak."

:dunno:

Pretty much any sale in the nhl gets the rubber stamped line of "remaining" in the market. Carolina will make a token effort of staying there and pack up a few season later.

Move to Quebec and fulfill the deal Bettman made during expansion. First dibs on relocation in the east.

I think you're right and he was worried about Stepan becoming another Callahan, and breaking down quicker than people thought. Like I said, they could have still signed Shattenkirk and kept Stepan if they really wanted to.

That is definitely possible but I would be surprised if they dont have a list of UFA and trade targets. Some of which would only be possible with cap space be it from a Stepan trade or another type of move.

Would've been tough or impossible to sign Z Bad without getting rid of other players.

Anything is possible but right now we wouldn't have room for Steps 6.5mill contract after re-signing Zibs. Maybe we could have if Nash or Staal were moved in some manner.

I think the NTC kicking in after July 1st didn't help Stepan's cause, and the main reason he got moved. Without that, I think Stepan is still potentially a Ranger.

I also don't see him breaking down so early like Cally did. With Cally, it was inevitable with the kind of game he played. Stepan doesn't really play like him. Much more finesse like a Brad Richards type.

You do if you trade Holden.

But Gorton and Rangers definitely didnt think they would get Shatty for what they did

Correct. They could have wanted to create cap space, as well as wanted to move on from Stepan for the reasons I listed. Por que no los dos!

Without Stepan being traded, we'd only have ~$2M right now to sign ZBad (currently have ~$8.4M), which is not happening in the slightest and would require some other move.

Something had to give.
