I see two paths to this team winning the Cup over the next couple of years:

1. The kids (Laf-Chytil-Kakko) really take off, to the point where they are as productive, or even more productive, than Zib+Kreider.

2. The kids continue to improve, Zib+Kreider maintain their current level, and Panarin regains his first year form.

A new 2C isn’t part of either of these scenarios. We lost to TBL because Kucherov was better than Panarin. I really think it boils down to that.

I’m not interested in gutting organizational depth and/or destroying the team’s cap structure in search of a center to lift up our $11M winger. Panarin needs to lift up whoever we put next to him.

Play the kids. Find a cheap, speedy, responsible C to play in the middle six. Enjoy the continued improvement on defense as the kids there gain experience. Hope that Shesty keeps it up.

Keep it simple please.

They are either trading picks and prospects now or at the deadline . Likely inevitable

Literally from your post: “The Rangers lost the ability to comfortably sign a 4th liner like Tyler Motte for ~$2M the second they signed a premier bottom 6 player in Barclay Goodrow for $3.6”

adverb: comfortably
  1. 1.
in a physically relaxed way that is free from constraint.
"he lounges comfortably in an armchair"
    • in a way that is free from stress or tension.
"a group of old friends getting together and chatting comfortably"
    • in a way that is free from financial worry.
      "she seems comfortably well-off"

I was preaching patience for last year, there was no need or going all in, i think the toothpaste is out of the tube now and they will continue to push the chips to the middle unfortunately

Was much more than 1 player imo. TB kept us pinned in our zone on many lines.

They don't need to gut the current roster but they also shouldn't stand pat.

Moving a body or two off of last year's team+nils/Robertson/whomever isn't what I'd consider gutting the roster, but they need to be smart about it.

Panarin also needs to be MUCH better. I don't need 2019-20 Panarin (I think that player is gone anyway) but I do need him to be way better than he was for much of last season and in the playoffs.

There’s another path and it’s called “The Kravtsov Effect”

LTIR, 1-year $5M, announce the surgery day one, add Miller for Chytil+Lundkvist+1st.

Kreider-Zibanejad-Lafreniere
Panarin-Miller-Kakko
Blais-Strome-Kravtsov
Motte-Goodrow-Rydahl/Cuylle

Lindgren-Fox
Miller-Trouba
Jones-Schneider
Hajek/7D

Shesterkin
backup

Goodrow 3C until Strome comes back, Rydahl as 4C, Hunt, and Reaves can rotate at 4RW if Cuylle isn't ready.

Except the issue here...Is that no matter what... IF strome is on this team.. He is stapled to panarin.

It would be nice for the Rangers to find bottom six players who don't make $2M or more per year. Tyler Motte was in the Panarin trade to Columbus. He had just completed his first season on the 3 year ELC. Nick Paul was making $1.35M last season. His 2nd contract was $650,000. His 3rd contract was $750,000. He signs a 2 year contract for $2.7M which took him up to 7 years and $3.15M AAV. Motte's 2nd contract was $975,000. His 3rd contract was 2 years for $2.45M taking him up to this summer. Motte was traded by Chicago to Columbus to Vancouver. Paul was traded by the Stars to Ottawa in the Spezza trade.

Years of bitching about letting Fast go

Now it is don't sign Motte for 2 mil or it will alter the entire course of the franchise
Fast is a much better player than Motte, who has the ability to play up in the lineup. Motte is ideally a 4th line forward who might be able to fill in on the 3rd line. There's no similarities between the two circumstances.

The primary difference between Fast and Motte was that Fast was capable of providing enough offense to play in the top 9 when needed, Motte is not. He’s a pure fourth liner.
The Rangers MO is overpaying 4th liners the last 12 months so if anything this is expected lol

Ok but then don’t weigh in on moves that should or shouldn’t be made and then retreat to “that’s not my job to worry about.” The discussion, if you want to participate in it, has to take the cap into account.
I can discuss adding a 4th liner to the mix without writing an essay about what the cap may look like in 2 years. Too many variables and complexities to worry about every single dollar and the cap may actually go up after 23-24 season. I want my team to ice the best team they can within reason even if it means spending a few extra dollars. I trust the professionals to understand the nuances and details of the cap. I mean we aren't talking about signing McDavid here.
