Paying the price to bring back Miller would be peak Rongos stupid, but the only thing funnier/sadder than the way this board twists themselves into knots trying to convince themselves he's not a damn good player is that an organisation who at one point could happily spend $82m per year to ice one of the worst teams in the league, who makes super profits every year, can't figure out how to help a young player 'mature' without giving him away.

Imagine a team and organization who actually understood how to develop draft picks? It's highly likely they would have either helped their 23 year old 50pt centre continue to develop and refine his game, or at least traded him for something worthwhile. Instead, after screwing his development they manage to select and then alienate another centre, help another highly touted forward quite the team, and then draft 2 high draft pick forwards who produced historically low points totals for their draft position.

Around the industry, team executives and agents that The Athletic polled agreed that it’s critical for the Canucks to find a team in the second camp in order to maximize their trade return.

“If Vancouver’s talking to a team about trading him, they (the Canucks) are going to say, ‘OK, you talk to his agent now and try to work out a deal,’ because how much in assets is a team going to give up for one year?” explained one veteran player agent who isn’t affiliated with Miller’s camp. “Vancouver’s not going to get what they need (in a trade) from a one-year rental. They need J.T. Miller to sign a long-term deal with somebody (as part of the trade to maximize their return).”

The value proposition of Miller as a one-year rental versus a long-term core piece could be quite different.

New York Rangers: The Rangers have been linked to Miller for months which isn’t a surprise given their uncertainty at the 2C position next season. Colleague Arthur Staple noted that New York’s reluctance to dangle right-shot defender Braden Schneider in a Miller trade complicated talks with the Canucks ahead of the trade deadline. What I wonder is whether the Rangers can fit Miller beyond next season.

Between Artemi Panarin, Mika Zibanejad, Adam Fox, Chris Kreider and Jacob Trouba, the Rangers have about $44.1 million in cap space committed to just five players. Could they really afford to pay Miller in the $8-million range on top of that? Especially since that doesn’t even consider Igor Shesterkin who’ll be due for a significant raise in 2025?

If the Rangers only see Miller as a one-year option, that could limit how much they’d be willing to pay the Canucks to acquire him.

Could?

$49,809,524 in those 5 players plus $5,666,667 for Shesterkin.

Lol, Maybe so.

But it's Kakko and Chytil I want to see broken in on the PK next season. Chytil would have to be paired with a faceoff guy, but that's one of the easiest ways to increase his minutes.
Exactly what they should be doing. Kakko is plenty good in his own zone. Chytil would maybe be a stretch, but worth finding out. Getting a PK 4th liner at the deadline is cheap, and you're probably adding one anyway.

Zibanejad/Kreider
Goodrow/Chytil
XXXX/Kakko

Whoever the 4C is slots in that last spot. If it's Goodrow, it's whoever the other center is.

If Drury knows he has an option to trade Trouba or Kreider next offseason Miller makes a bit more sense. You should be able to recoup assets in that deal assuming the player will work with the team to facilitate a move.

Motte took some draws

Tampa was able to neuter McDonagh’s no-trade clause and unload his cap hit, because he could be waived and end up on a bad team with cap space.

The Rangers gave Kreider and Trouba no-movement clauses. They can’t waive or threaten to waive Kreider at all, or Trouba for another two seasons.

Threaten Trouba with releasing the video/audio of the front office's discussions about his play.

The conversation could be had next offseason however that if they agreed to be traded, they would have more say in where they go at that point than the season following because of that NMC

Prefer JT as a rental but the idea of 2 80-90 point centers for the foreseeable future is enticing. It would expedite the removal of Trouba to Detroit though

I strongly question if you've actually watched him play much or if you're primarily going off of numbers. We've had this conversation many times or certain players have great analytics and then they get traded in reality sets in. Part of the reason is great analytics is some of the guys that he plays with are such puck possession players and play drivers.

Panarin doesn't want to play with certain players bc they kill his plays, LD and mcd don't want to play with jp bc he kills plays offensively, but bread is going to work well with him? 🤔😵

I have one objection here, McDavid plays a very different style than Panarin does. I am not saying that this per default makes your point invalid, but I also think Pulju would make sense with Panarin (albeit our wing logjam makes me more sceptical).

McDavid and Leo are like Seguin and Benn in Dallas and also closer to Ziba and Kreider in how they approach the game with the puck. It’s about speed, they love putting pucks in areas behind the Ds and are able to get to those areas faster than the defenders. Making “area passes” is a term used a lot with these guys. Ultimately, they just push the pace to an extreme.

Panarin is the complete opposite. He is the classic type that lives on his ability to slow the pace down and change the tempo. This style just fits Pulju better.

No he wasn't.

For all centers with 500 minutes:
5v5 P/60: 33rd
5v5 relxGF/60: 36th
5v5 relCF/60: 56th
Raw point totals: 11th
all situations oWAR/60: 22nd
all situations P/60: 17th

you can dispute the numbers if you want but he wasn't by any metric top 10.
I guess I missed the part about top 5v5 offensive centers?

I'm openly bias. I love zib and think he belongs there.

White appealed based his success in the past.
OTT fans dismiss it as due to playing with Stone, but complementing skill players is a skill unto itself
These are the UFA C's 28 or under who played 13+ GP in '21-22

repeating myself, sorry, but
I'd be willing to start out with a Chytil, a guy like White or these, and Stastny, along with the prospects, and let the staff sort it out, to start in the fall

I worry that signing a Strome/Copp/etc this July, at Free-Agent-Frenzy prices/term, will stress NYR's Cap situation, for upcoming season, at TDL and beyond

player availabilities arise throughout the early and mid-season, as rosters cut down, players complete rehab, surprising guys grab roster spots, transaction lead to transactions, etc
In season trades are nearly impossible with a flat cap and no one having cap space.

Colin white has done nothing to justify a top 9 role on this team with where we are hoping to go this year. He had one okay season how many years ago. He would be battling for a 3rd line spot and hopefully would end up on the 4th line as insurance for injuries. I trust white as much as I trust blais to stay healthy, and I much prefer blais. White literally gives nothing to this top 9 that is unique besides being a shiney new toy. He's not good on faceoffs, isn't terribly productive offensively, and isn't a defensive stud. He's just another middling player trying to find a role in the NHL.
