Almost have to go with Copp, no? It just seems to make the most sense if you can bring him back around $5 million for 4 or 5 years. As the cap goes up, that contract would be movable and acceptable as a 3C. Still leaves the asset gun loaded for a trade of someone like Nils to a rebuilder for a vet around the deadline.
The other FA centers that are most likely to be signed for term are Strome, Trocheck, and Kadri. I do think Trocheck would play a better 2C role than Strome, as their production was similar this year but Trocheck adds a little more grit and was better on face-offs.
Kadri would cost too much, almost assuredly.
I don't know what Strome was looking for in terms of salary, but I saw one report back around the deadline that said he would take $5.75, but that would be "if the term was right." With his history, I can't see committing to him for 7 or 8 years. That's a big mistake, never mind if his salary demands have increased.
Could also sign someone to a shorter term with the aim of going after a big fish next year, but that's betting on that player not signing.
