Almost have to go with Copp, no? It just seems to make the most sense if you can bring him back around $5 million for 4 or 5 years. As the cap goes up, that contract would be movable and acceptable as a 3C. Still leaves the asset gun loaded for a trade of someone like Nils to a rebuilder for a vet around the deadline.

The other FA centers that are most likely to be signed for term are Strome, Trocheck, and Kadri. I do think Trocheck would play a better 2C role than Strome, as their production was similar this year but Trocheck adds a little more grit and was better on face-offs.

Kadri would cost too much, almost assuredly.

I don't know what Strome was looking for in terms of salary, but I saw one report back around the deadline that said he would take $5.75, but that would be "if the term was right." With his history, I can't see committing to him for 7 or 8 years. That's a big mistake, never mind if his salary demands have increased.

Could also sign someone to a shorter term with the aim of going after a big fish next year, but that's betting on that player not signing.

stop, people on this board ran the guy out of here bc they didnt like his info even though it was true, and now people are going to be clamoring for him to come back again. why would he do that?

maybe if some on this board stopped acting like whiney children on bath salts he wouldnt have left, again...
The majority of the Hfers here, including myself treated with @Edge with the reverence he deserved and were grateful for his contributions both on his opinions and inside knowledge.
I don’t wish to believe that Edge left because of the trolls who were posing as Ranger fans began giving him a hard time by challenging his posts but more likely by Drury’s clamp down on information making it to the press and public.
Once again I’m grateful for the time he spent here and hope he returns under a new name just to share his thoughts on this team and hockey in general, even though it turned out that he wasn’t Eddie Olczyk.

Sam Bennett. Florida needs to move money. Giroux is a free agent. He wants to stay there. Chiarot is a free agent. Malkin may want to go there if things don't work in Pittsburgh and it doesn't seem Pittsburgh will increase whatever offer they made him. Florida needs younger D in their system. They signed former Rangers draft pick Calle Sjalin a few weeks ago. They need cheap bodies.

Corey Pronman discussed each team's biggest need.

Florida Panthers: Defenseman

Florida’s system isn’t that deep and they don’t have many picks, but they do have several good, young forwards and Spencer Knight in net. They have very little coming on the blue line. I like Evan Nause but they need a lot more than just him.

Nils Lundkvist to Florida for Bennett. He is signed for three more seasons. $4.425M cap hit. Bennett just turned 26. He isn't a one year rental. The number is good. The term is good. The cap will be flat for the next two seasons. Maybe the next three seasons. Kadri had the same number and term left when Sakic acquired him from the Leafs. Bennett is the perfect guy behind Zibanejad.

Lundkvist becomes their best prospect. Ekblad is signed for three more seasons. Weegar has one more season and he is gone.

I’d be all over that deal.

This is why they pay you the big bucks @RangerBoy . This is my favorite suggestion yet

Why is Florida choosing Giroux over Bennett? Have to assume they'd move Hornquist witha pick rather than dump Bennett
They'll also get much better offers than Lundkvist if they do decide to shop him

The price for Bennett is more like Schneider, or maybe Lindgren. The Panthers are in win now, they don't want prospects more than we do.

I couldn't agree with this post more. I always had a high regard for @Edge; he is missed here. I, too, hope he decides to return here. The people challenging his posts need to get over themselves. Not all rumours become reality; actually, very few of them do. All GMs, for the most part, want to keep info getting into the media at a mininum.

2022 2nd + Lundkvist for Bennett
I'm still struggling to see what's really in it for Florida. Surely they think Bennett is part of the solution?
IMO at the minimum before looking to move Bennett they'd try one or more of:
- move Hornquist with a pick
- move Bob with retention (good luck)
- stand pat for 12 months until Yandle's buyout drops by $4m

Weird team. They will put up big regular season numbers but their lack of defense and goalie prone to softies are tough to overcome in the playoffs

I wouldn't be surprised to see the team just add a depth center or two and call it a day. That is, if they don't re-sign Strome which I kind of feel they are going to do.

We're going to have to skimp somewhere and with the way the team is currently constructed that's almost inevitably going to be the center position.

I have a feeling Drury is going to surprise and shock people this summer. I get the feeling we will see a Brassard - Mika trade this summer for our center down the middle. PLD fits the bill. Miller been there done that, who else is out there. Maybe a younger player no one expects is available. Anything is possible during the off season. No one expected Mika to be traded here when he was dealt especially for a playoff warrior like Brassard was. I feel PLD will; be a Ranger by training camp. Maybe Kakko stays or goes. Who knows.

id move Kakko, Lundkvist, Robertson, 1st in 2024 for PLD, Logan Stanley and Cole Perfetti

Hornqvist for Nemeth and Gauthier??

Florida might go for it. But at this point he's a 35-40 pt winger with a $6m cap hit for the season. Do we need him?

I can see the argument that subtracting Nemeth makes the cap ok, but we could probably still have someone like Vatrano for less, and try to move Nemeth elsewhere.
I'd love to get Bennett (or Verheaghe) but I think we don't have the right peices/cost is too high

I prefer Bennett but I doubt Panthers move him so quickly but stranger things have happen. Hornqvist would go to the net on the PP. plays a gritty physical game. Agitates. Good player to have something the top 6 does not have any bite. That is needed for the playoffs. Hornqvist is a pain in the ass. I always been a fan. Hated him when he was on the Penguins. He gets the dirty goals. skilled guy that plays a net game. We need more of that on this team

i hope Frankie V resigns here. He is a good fit on this team.

How many picks is Florida going to move? They have no first or second this year, one second next year, and no first and second the year after

1 for Hornqvist maybe?
I dont know, I just don't believe they'll be in a hurry to move a guy like Bennett. I also wouldn't do a heap of stuff GMs do, so what would I know? 😁

If you asked me two weeks ago I would have told you Florida wouldn’t move Bennett but then hiring Maurice suggests maybe anything is possible lol

I like Hornqvist’s game and agree we need more of it, but I’m not touching that cap hit. I’d be interested if Florida buys him out. Could be a one if those veteran depth guys who we sign for cheap like the other contenders.

Hornqvist is only an option if he comes on the cheap like Perry with Tampa. We cant deal with Hornqvist’s current cap hit even if they retained a little and we sent Nemeth that way. It would be piss poor cap management to add a winger at a $5-$6 million cap hit when we can have Motte and Vatrano back for that amount. And possibly still add another forward vet on a 1 year $1 million deal. Just cant do that.

The Rangers prospect depth is not what it was 2 years ago. If they start trading Lundkvist and Robertson or Cuylle, the depth is going to nose-dive quickly. Most of the young players will be in the NHL. This sounds like no big deal until we realize that the team needs those young players to be cheap ELC’s to fill roles.

Drury and his scouting staff paid a pretty good price for Copp. Copp played very well for the team in his short stint here. The team needs a quality, 2-way center which is what he can be, specifically when supported by very good wingers.

The question with Copp is contract. For me it’s less about term as it is about structure. If the Rangers can get him to move away from a NMC after year 2 or 3, going to 6 years can be provided to keep the cap hit down. The Rangers can structure it just like Kreider’s by getting the majority of the money paid in the early years.

Re-signing Copp probably makes the Rangers a top-4 team in the east next year, maybe top-3. That means, hopefully, another deep playoff run next year which as we saw this year, is utterly valuable to the young players. Losing him and trying to back-fill the 3C role with someone like Stastny or Larsson probably pushes the Rangers back into that 2nd grouping in the east.
