I started thinking that as soon as the Avs won the cup. But then, do you really let Shesterkin walk? That would be like if you let Lundqvist walk halfway into his prime.
last thing i want to see is a repeat of the mistake of locking all that $$ in the Goalie position. With his Vienza trophy it, looks like they are headed that way. Everything needs to "click" going forward, youth, vets, etc. and that rarely happens...

Maybe the best thing is to try to win now and avoid the big money contract for a Goalie in the future.

But can you have that contract on your roster and still ice a team capable of skating for a Stanley Cup?

I just don't see it in today's NHL. Unless, of course, you take part in outrageous salary cap hijinks.
Igor is a player you figure it out for. Don't care who you have to trade. Only untouchables will probably be him, fox, Laf and maybe KK depending how he has developed by then.

They absolutely shouldn't invest $10M+ in a goalie but I can 100%, beyond a shadow of a doubt tell you that they will
most likely, because its profitable. if they can manage to ice a better team in front of him, they may have a better shot at going all the way in the next few years.

ridiculous looking at garand right now and even considering the thought that means we wont resign the best goalie in the league three years from now. this fanbase has been so spoiled going from henke to igor that they dont even realize how fortunate they are. how many teams have been looking for stable goaltending for almost a decade, we've had elite goaltending for almost two decades. it's not the fault of the goaltending that the org invested other money into the wrong players at the wrong amounts. figure the rest of it out around the goaltending and stop overpaying other players who have enhanced stats from playing in front of elite goaltending or bringing in the wrong players. so far drury has done great and i think he deserves the benefit here.

If Igor isn't our goalie then Drury should be fired on the spot,.

When his contract is up he should still have a good 4 years in his prime or at least as a top goalie still,.
What if he has an injury riddled next three years, stays healthy in his contract year and is nominated for another Vezina, and asks for 7 years, $70 million after that?

I'm not sure that's the move either.

We have unfortunately seen that elite goaltending doesn’t win Cups. Goalies only affect one part of the game. They can’t score goals. And shitty goalies get hot and can close the gap between them and the best to the point that the difference in negligible over the course of a series or even a playoffs.

It’s very hard to ice a great team with the cap. Even harder to do so if you have a lot invested in a keeper.

Hockey is a business, but I'm pretty confident that Shesterkin will not leave unless he really gets underpaid. His idol is Hank. He now plays the same position, in the same city, for the same team, with a contention window that is wide open and has the ability to be wide open for around 5-7 years.

Unless you think he wants to chase the largest paycheck a goalie has ever seen, he's going to be a Ranger for the remainder of his prime.

The salary cap will only go up from here. National exposure is through the roof. Two big network deal currently unaccounted for in the cap. Viewership for this year's postseason was immense. Just look at these numbers:

Look at the 18-49 demographic. You're looking at a growing game for a change. This isn't only being inflated by sponsorships and other things to make the cap go up. So many people are being exposed to the sport for the first time since 2004. You've got new fans coming in the building. By the time Shesterkin is set to get his new deal, the salary cap should be north of $100M.

I'm going with the assumption he is relatively healthy. Yea if he has a career-changing injury or is completely injury prone most of the time then things can change.

lol yeah he's only a year older than Shesty
Also has had a much, MUCH bigger workload since he was 20. Wouldn't be surprised if injuries start catching up with him and his play starts to drop much quicker than Igor's down the road.

i respect this as well. we need players like this at the START of their careers, not at the end.
his lack of speed will only hurt the rangers when playoffs start. If he can only sustain a high level of play for a handful of games, what's the point?
The coaches and management will decide this. For most the regular season I felt Reeves was very effective. I also felt he was solid vs Pitt. He declined vs Carolina a bit. I think Tampa put him in a bad place because Tampa was a tough veteran team with a gigantic Maroon of their own.

Wow only 10 points in his last 12 playoff games. As if him scoring 14 goals in 17 games right before that gets completely nullified because he was 2 points under PPG. Also remember when JTM had 1 goal in like 30+ playoff games

He’s not a phenomenal playoff player. You’re wrong. That’s the end of the story.

He had a confirmed concussion and missed the next three games.

Yeah but he also had ongoing concussion issues, which were quiet common at the time, where sometimes it took nothing for a guy to get problems. Hagelin getting 3 PO games for that really stood out, when others got 1-2 games for murder.

Now we’re comparing Panarin to Loui Eriksson lmfao we’re in for a long summer, most underappreciated player in franchise history.

I have commented on this a few times, but in March when everyone have super confident views on all players, it’s fun to point out that 3 weeks later a 180’ turn cannot be ruled out on anyone. “Fox is the best D we ever had”, a bad week, “trade him!!!”

How'd he do in the playoffs when he got himself suspended for four games and destroyed his teams chances in the next round?

He's also not an incredible playoff performer. He just had one run where he shot 31%.

100% agree. Also, there is a difference between scoring a ton in especially the first round against an awful opponents and later on in the POs.

Schleife hasn’t been any kind of difference maker later in the POs or against better opponents.

In addition, (a) inflation is raging now and the salaries are following rapidly, 5% inflation is something the cap haven’t seen besides perhaps 1-2 years after 05’. (b) Oil-prices are roaring. Canada and the loonie will always be highly impacted by oil and natural resources. Canada stands for what, 25% of the NHLs revenues, while the incomes are counted in USD. If the loonie gains 10% on the USD, it’s 2.5% higher HRR for the NHL. (c) The Cap haven’t been calculated under normal circumstances since Seattle entered the league. Seattle will earn more than league average which increase HRR.

Against this we have a down turn in the economy which could impact the cap.

The economy will always be trendy, but facts are that the growth potential is almost endless. If it weren’t for Covid we could very well see a cap close to 100m already.

Ultimately, this screwed Toronto pretty bad. A young upcoming team also needs an expanding cap. It’s hard when you can’t make any additions.

The Rangers put themselves in a tough spot with Igor, hopefully by the time he needs a new deal the cap will be going back up but this has Hank 2.0 written all over it.

Don’t worry his behemoth pads will protect him
