He has bad shooting luck because he's shooting from further out, AND also taking less shots.
He was also turning the puck over more often.

Did he score and put up points? Absolutely. But those two stats on their own aren't always indicitive of a great season. When you score the 5th goal in a 5-1 game, you're not really contributing that much but you''ve still scored a goal.

He had a higher shot rate at 5v5 last year than the year before.

Panarin's issues last year at 5v5 stemmed from him doing more stupid shit than normal. Whether or not that was just because of a combo gone bad or age related regression I'm not sure (perhaps both), but it was there for most of the year.

If you're looking for a glimmer of hope, he looked like he was back to his normal self the last month of the season before reverting to the dumb Panarin that we saw most of the year, it was just more magnified because of the stakes/better competition cashing in on his errors. But you need to take into account that their level of competition the last month of the season wasn't exactly stellar.

I know there was a rumor on here from a poster that he wasn't able to train like he normally did in the offseason, but I'm calling bullshit on that. I don't doubt what the poster heard, but shit like that doesn't stay silent.

if he pushes Hunt and Gauthier out of the lineup and in the AHL where they belong, I am for it.

Today’s Media Availability. Brennan Othmann and Will Cuylle.

If these two pan out, and they certainly seem to be on the right track, it will give this Rangers team another dimension that need but don't currently have right now with consistency. Guys who can actually play a skilled game, willing to battle and play with an edge. I know people hate this take but I really believe Kakko & Kravtsov's days are numbered if they don't show tangible improvements this year. Lafreniere has already shown more than both and we are still very deep with the wing prospects who are getting close to the NHL level.

Wish the team would be more economically savy and showcase players more, to grow their value for an eventual trade. I think it would be the difference between a 3rd and a 2nd rnd pick, maybe even a first.

I guess, these kids weren't ready so far, but this year I want to see some rookie show-casing and rotating. Jones and Robertson, the defense specially.

Sad to see Motter go so cheap. Will speed be an issue next season?
I'd rather win games with the best team we can put out there.

Don't touch that dial kids and stay tuned to Nickelodeon's Saturday Morning Marathon because Vitali Kravtsov's Redemption Arc starts right now!

How exactly should a team showcase a player, while also trying to win games and develop chemistry among new lines?
We're not in tank mode anymore.

Maybe I watched too much soccer and expect the team to be stacked to point of easily shifting the 6th D and still have chemistry and all. Consider Schneider an easy partner for that, with him being the shit and all.

There will be injuries, assuming that's 40 games worth, you could give Lundkvist, Jones and Robertson each 40 games, or 60-30-30. That would be something at least.

Also, this sounds like you didn't watch the 534D chess the Rangers we're playing with their line juggling. Once in decade they dice out a KZB or kid line, even if some weren't even convinced of that chemistry. I believe chemistry comes with time, but Rangers coaches eventually juggle it up.

If we are as good as we may think we are, this team needs to stomp out a top 3 finish in the regular season and the depth will really show if we can. I just hope the kids are good enough, to get something propper in return.

Last season was a career high for points for panarin. But it was also his worst as a ranger.
The two things can be mutually exclusive.
He played far softer on the puck, he wasnt as aggressive and shot far less. His shooting percentage dropped significantly too. from around 15% to 12%.
His career shooting percentage is 14.3. Last season was 12.4. That is well within a normal range.

He led the team in EVEN-STRENGTH scoring despite playing with linemates far inferior to Kreider and Zib.

If he wasn't under a big contract, he'd be universally beloved by the fanbase. Some fans turn on players as their contracts rise.

People here bitched about Kreider's contract, Zib's contract, Goodrow's contract, Trouba's contract etc,.

Some fans seem to believe that you should be able to put out a Stanley Cup contender every season without getting close to the Cap. Good luck with that strategy.

Metrics matter, but not more than results.

By the way, Schneider was a disaster by the metrics as the season wore on, including in the playoffs, yet some here think he's already a stud.

I for one cannot wait for the “its not sustainable” crowd to be back in full force in late November with a relentless push of that narrative all the way up until playoff time.

I hope this team performs much better than they did last year so that the unsustainable argument doesn't even have the opportunity to assemble.

What makes Lundkvist “soft” and “overrated”…. This answer should be interesting to say the least.

I agree with the overrated portion of it considering that there were a few people here who had him penciled in as a long term fixture and even a few who wanted to move Fox off of the PP for him but I wouldn't categorize him as soft. Lets not get it twisted, MOST of this board thought he was going to be a NHL ready shoe in from day 1 (they were half right.)

Though I wouldn't call him soft. If anything, his most redeeming quality at the NHL level was how willing he was to play through contact. It was a problem because it happened way to often because he couldn't skate around/away from anyone and at his size he just isn't going to win those battles very often, but it wasn't for a lack of effort or being afraid to get hit/tied up.

Elliotte Friedman discussed the salary cap in the latest 32T podcast. The NHLPA are hopeful the cap will go up next summer while the NHL sees a $1M increase next summer and the cap increases the following summer. The NHL and the NHLPA need to have a discussion.
