I will concede that he is still producing.
My concern is if that will continue this year. Possible, absolutely. Probable? Yes. Guaranteed. Nope.
But the bolded section above is not going to be the winning bid in any potential trade for Kane and that's a non-starter for me.
Sadly, I agree with the last statement. If the Rangers are top of the east, Drury will be forced to pull a dumb move like this.....unfortunately
This whole Patrick Kane stuff is so annoying. At the moment, our big needs for another playoff run is not more scoring. It's possible we could be hit by the injury bug this season and all that could change. But this regular season is about letting the kids improve the scoring depth on the team. If Kakko, Laf, Chytil or Kravtsov collectively or individually become impact offensive players -- this team will have more than enough scoring depth come playoff time. The thing that's currently out of whack is our bottom 6 and our bottom pair D is ok at best for the regular season but severely lacking come playoff time. We lack enough forwards who can be relied upon late in games. One thing, even more than scoring, we need from 2 of the 4 young forwards is for them to be reliable in their own zone, protecting late game leads, defensive draws, PK. It's going to be hard to justify the forward group as is if more than half of the top 9 can't PK in addition to a 4th line that may not have the best PK options.
Same issue with bottom pair D. One reason Gallant didn't love playing NL with Fox in the lineup and why he will likely have an aversion to Zach Jones is the PK. That bottom pair should really be eating more minutes on the PK to reduce our dependence on the top 4.
Like this past deadline, there's a good chance we'll be looking to add multiple role players for the playoffs. Again, all of this goes out the window if we sustain a long term injury to any of the core pieces. But at the moment, adding Patrick Kane for the playoff run doesn't make a ton of sense. Adding him just pushes kids who need the experience to the bench. And still leaves us with the other role player needs which we won't be able to address if Kane came here.
Finally, this isn't 2012. What this team lacks isn't a Rick Nash or a Marian Gaborik. We already have Panarin Fox and Zibby. We have Kreider and Laffy and Trocheck. Not to mention possibly more scoring depth with VK, KK FC and Zach Jones.
But if you look at our 4th line options right now -- what are we starting the year with? Some combo of Goodrow, Blais, Carpenter, Gauthier, Reaves, Rydahl? Let's say Goody is up on the 3rd line. If the 4th line is Blais, Carpenter and Reaves that means only Carpenter is your only PK option from the 4th line. On the 3rd line, only Goody (unless Kakko starts to PK again). Then it's Kreider, Zibby and Trocheck taking the bulk of the PK minutes. Point is, right now, bottom half of our lineup is fine for the regular season but it's really lacking come playoffs. Instead of Kane, we're going to need Tyler Motte, Justin Braun types again.
