The Rangers now find themselves in the other position. This team needs to learn to put away weaker opponents without giving them much of a chance.
True. They are clearly playing up when the opponent is "good" and down when they are "bad". That's not a recipe for success. Have to beat the teams you should beat.

Nobody said the Penguins were superior until they were down 3-1, but ok I'll give you Carolina. First series shouldn't have needed a 3-1 comeback and he blew a 2-0 series lead against Tampa with his personnel decisions. 2 out of the 3 series - not impressive.
We were the underdog in each series. An injury to Pitt in goal lead to our increased chances, as well as an injury to Crosby. However, good and bad things go both ways and finding a way to win is all that matters. So the answer is 2 out of 3 series won, pretty impressive.

Home ice advantage in the first and third series, finished with more points than both of those teams - that's the underdog? Spin zone only works so much.

Haha. Not trying to spin anything. Tampa was not the underdog, and Pit was only the underdog on the betting line at the beginning of the series by -10. And still, underdog or not, getting the win is what matters. 2 out of 3 is good. Not what we want, but winning 4 out of 4 is tough.

Lots of talk about shooting percentage and hdc, crickets on sv%. Regardless of whether we deserve more goals for, Shesterkin playing to the level he's capable of (and not all-time best single season level necessarily) would also probably have us significantly higher in the standings.

They were the underdog; what is this revisionist history. Rangers were the favorite against Tampa? No one cared about the standings.

Ok, so NOW Pitt is the underdog. Rangers still finished the season as better team in reg season than Tampa, beat them 3-0. Had home ice advantage.

Winning four out of four is tough. It's incredibly hard NOT TO when you go up 2-0 though.

Only like 3 points higher though since he's 6-1-2 despite the slow start.

Having your backup go 0-3-1 with a sub .900 save percentage really chips a lot off the top.

Right but that just speaks to the outsized concern over 13 games. 3 points is 11% of possible points. It would have us tied for first in the division with a record over .500 and likely a goal differential in the green.

I would try this lineup asap:

Artemi Panarin -- Mika Zibanejad -- Vitali Kravtsov Kitchen sink line
Alexis Lafreniere -- Filip Chytil -- Kaapo Kakko Kid line
Chris Kreider -- Vincent Trocheck -- Sammy Blais/Jimmy Vesey line
Jimmy Vesey/Sammy Blais/ -- Barclay Goodrow -- Julien Gauthier or Ryan Reaves Goon it up line
Extra - Ryan Carpenter (hmmmm)

Ryan Lindgren -- Adam Fox
K'Andre Miller -- Jacob Trouba
Zac Jones -- Braden Schneider
Extra - Libor Hajek

Igor Shesterkin
Backup - Jaroslav Halak

Current cap space: $173,801

But here is what I would do relatively soon…

Waive:
Ryan Carpenter ($750.000)
Trade 1 - Julien Gauthier ($800.000) and Lauri Pajuniemi to the Desert Dogs for Nick Bjugstad ($900.000) and a conditional 2024 7th rounder - Arizona retains $200.000 on Bjugstad
Trade 2 - Libor Hajek ($800.000) to Canuck Country for Luke Schenn ($850.000)

Lineup until TDL

Artemi Panarin -- Mika Zibanejad -- Vitali Kravtsov (Barclay Goodrow - late in games)
Alexis Lafreniere -- Filip Chytil -- Kaapo Kakko Kid line
Chris Kreider -- Vincent Trocheck -- Sammy Blais/Nick Bjugstad Matchup line
Sammy Blais/Nick Bjugstad --
Barclay Goodrow -- Jimmy Vesey or Ryan Reaves

Ryan Lindgren -- Adam Fox
K'Andre Miller -- Jacob Trouba
Zac Jones or Luke Schenn -- Braden Schneider

Igor Shesterkin
Jaroslav Halak

Cap space: $973,801

Then we see...

Our pp hasnt been near as effective without Strome. Looks like Panarin is now playing with Zib? So far this move hasn't worked as well as we hoped faceoffs aside.

If we were to change our coach (not saying we should or we shouldn't) do you think a person like Torts would be good? Teach the team accountability, learn a real system etc.

I'm not sure this ''let the players run freely and work it all out'' is working.

Now that Shesty isn't playing like Hasek that is. And we can't expect him to be that good.
Good question. I think that this team, while generally pretty young, has a very firmly-set leadership group. i'm not sure any coach could really challenge that. (and i think that's kind of what would happen with a guy like Torts). I think the team will live and die with the Trouba/Panarin/Mika/Kreider leadership group.

Personally i think these guys will figure it out. So i wouldnt want to fight that war. But it's a fair question right now.

On ice goal differential 5on5

Of those -2 or worse, so far this season:

-5 Panarin, Carpenter, Reaves
-3 Goodrow, Miller
-2 Trouba, Hajek, Schneider

Same players ended Last season:

Panarin +22
Miller, Trouba +21
Goodrow +9
Schneider +4

Hajek -10
Reaves -13
Carpenter -10 (on the Hawks)

All meaningless in terms of favorite/underdog status. And even though they won the first two rounds, the play proved that. Pittsburgh AND Carolina blew it, big time. No fcking way in hell were they favorites in any series. This year too, they won't be favorites in any series they play. Doesn't mean they won't win a series or a game, but not favorites.

And yeah I am just a big baby needing to cOpE.

This keeps up, both 1sts better not be in play.

This team is trash right now.

i’d only trade one of the 1 st for a young power forward type. Rangers can use a power physical winger on this team. Someone to open space for the 85% of this team which is soft inconsistent perimeter players that don’t know how to crash the net on this team. If the Predators continue to struggle I wonder if they would move Tanner Jeanott.

I don't think they should be in play even if we improve. This isn't a cup caliber team. We're gone in the first round last year if crosby doesn't get hurt. I'm not getting the impression that this leadership core is going to lead us to the cup. I don't think we have enough win at all costs types. We need to keep the pipeline flowing.

I know last night sucked and this has been a tough streak but somehow I’m still optimistic. I think they are playing significantly better hockey than a year ago.

That said, they obviously can’t dig too deep of a hole. If Igor gets his game together this is still a top 3 team in the conference.

Just put Kakko and Panarin in different lines for f***s sake.

The team has been good at 5v5 so far, so that bodes well for the rest of the regular season and possibly the post-season.

Igor and Halak have been a below-average/totally pedestrian tandem, mostly because of Igor.

This keeps up, both 1sts better not be in play.

This team is trash right now.
This team won't have the cap space available for either pick to be in play, even for offloading.

Said it earlier this year and ill say it again. $1.525 in cap space accruing is far more valuable than sammy blais. I wouldve waived blais and kept hunt. Blais has 6 assists and 0 goals in 25 games with us
