The Kucherov deal was signed in 2016 I believe and the DeBrincat in 2019. All pre-covid and potentially 7 and 4 years respectively from when Laff would be signing his new deal. I dont think they would be used as any comparable.
The best comparables are Necas, Yamamoto, Kakko and Mittelstadt, though Mittelstadt signed his contract in 2021. All the others signed this past summer.

* Numbers for Lafreniere are as of today. The rest are as of when they signed.

Necas has the best numbers of the bunch. He even had a year in which he scored 41 points in 53 games. But he only had 40 points in 78 games last year. That "regression" probably factored into his AAV.

Yamamoto's numbers were close. Less goals and points, and a lower PPG average, but his career highs are similar. He probably should have gotten a little less than Necas, but he was coming off his best year, in which he scored 41 points in 81 games.

Laf is trending to have better numbers than either Kakko or Mittelstadt, but without significant PP time, he'll be hard-pressed to surpass Necas and Yamamoto. Maybe he gets a bump due to being a former #1 overall pick, but being a #2 overall pick didn't help Kakko.

If Laf ends up with 41 points this year, he'll have 93 for his career, same as Yamamoto had, though I'd expect his total goals would be higher. It's certainly possible that Laf ends up with 50+ points this year as long as he's playing with Panarin and Trocheck and stays healthy. That would probably mean he gets more than any of these players, but how much more is the question. I have a hard time seeing him get more than 4 mil per on a 2 year deal, but if he manages to hit 60+ points or 30+ goals, then who knows.

So a small bridge benefits Laf. While we want to sign him to a longer bridge, but if the cap is going to start going up, we’ll have the ability to lock guys up earlier. If we assume 4m jumps then we can lock fil and key. Get Laf a short bridge. Lock Kakko after that.
Then Laf will get his right when Ck comes off the books.

The cap potentially going up $4m this off-season instead of the previous expected $1m really gives a ton more flexibility for potential Laf and/or Miller breakout years.

I bet Hunt gets claimed. With teams dealing with injuries I can see a team claiming him. I wonder what team that will be

Barabanov is a player I'd love to get, 28 years old but not much time in the NHL, 39 points last year, plays both LW and RW.

Signed for both this year and next year at 2.5

Sharks aren't competing, makes sense as a sell.

Would the Rangers take something out of the Lightning playbook?

Barabanov 50% retained for Rangers 1st 2023; Barabanov at 1.25 for this year and next.
If Krav does not break out for us, I could see the Rangers using Krav and a pick, likely not first round, for Barabanov instead. Rangers have a lot of young players around the same age looking for the same things. Can't keep them all.

IDK about Blais. The talent there is undeniable, but if it doesn't manifest itself in consistent production (for whatever reason), where's the value? Gauthier is also obviously talented but can't figure out how to make his offensive talents work in the NHL, so he's of little value to us at this point. Blais does more than Gauthier to contribute, but it's the same concept. Eventually you either prove you're a valuable contributor or you're gone.

I don't understand the hate for Hunt. He's a good fourth line player. He's not anything special, but I think he's pretty solidly an NHL player on a lot of teams, and could be here, too, if not for our roster/cap crunch. I hope we're able to retain him because he could still prove useful down the road.

This is one of those situations where people feel the need to belittle Blais in order to prop up Hunt. If everyone was able to just take a step back and look at it objectively, your take is sound. Blais does things well. So does Hunt. In an ideal world, they are both part of the organization.

The issue with both is that neither PK. Having Reaves already, which we have all discussed, leads to too many bottom-6 guys who aren't part of special teams.

I hope Hunt clears. He's a very useful depth forward.

In saying that, if he is claimed, I would look for Brodzinski, Rydahl, Gauthier and Gettinger being the top-4 candidates as call-ups. Not bad options at all in the grand scheme of things.

Well the very simple solution to the “neither PK” option is to try them on the PK and see what happens. Nash, Kreider, and Buch didn’t pk either until they did. It’s game 4 of the regular season. Plenty of time to try stuff.

I see we’ve wasted about eight pages arguing that *checks notes* having an elite powerplay and developing Kakko/Laf in top-6 roles in a winning environment is actually a bad thing
8 pages? That's nothing. People have wasted literally years arguing about a salary cap crunch when the NHL all of a sudden comes out with a "surprise, the cap might go up!" announcement.

Hunt wouldn’t had to go through waivers if the Rangers didn’t sign Vesey (everything else being equal). I hope Hunt clears but if not - this is a fair “trade” and doesn’t impact the team’s depth otherwise.

You don’t think the salary cap crunch isn’t happening right now.

Of course but it is happening not in any way that anyone predicted 4 years ago and is happening to half the league. It's got nothing to do with the rangers signing irresponsible contracts.

Just saying that the non-stop discussion about buying out Kreider, Panarin, hand wringing about Mika's contract, will Kakko get an offer sheet!?!?, was all a complete and utter waste of time.

Oh we are just at the tip of the iceberg with the “trade Kreider while his value is still high” discussion.

On hockey futures, we discuss the future of hockey. And since none of us are Nostradamus, at least some of the things we discuss don't come to pass. Color me shocked.

Who is a young D-man the Rangers could/should target? I'm talking like 2nd contract type of D.

I'd be really happy with 3 year deal... Hopefully at $4M

it would coincide with Panarin and Trouba's contracts coming off the books. Doesn't mean they can't be re-signed but their AAV wont be close to what it is today IMO... on second thought... who knows if the Cap is over $100M

I'm sure there was at least a few guys who did this.

But I have to look at another sport like baseball. How many players can switch hit? Just because the equipment makes it possible doesn't mean it's a good idea.
I'm sure a lot of players can shoot with either hand. I know a lot of goalies that have great shots with both hands. My son can shoot just as good with either. When he started skating, he shot right handed. When he moved to goalie, his glove is on his left hand, so he shoots left handed technically as a goalie. Because of this, he can grab whatever stick and has a good shot with both.

its a sunk cost at this point but realistically how much better is sammy blais than hunt? Blais would open like $6mm in space for the deadline. But people would cry at the fact we lost buch for nothing. Again, sunk cost
When healthy, Blais is the better player at every facet of the game I can think of.

While I would love Hunt to clear waivers, the Rangers are not actually in a bad depth position at forward if we need to recall a player. I am comfortable if any of Gauthier, Rydahl, Brodz, or Gettinger needing to play some games. I'm sure CJ Smith wouldn't be a total train wreck either.

I am less confident who would be the next defensemen to come up if we need one. I really like Robertson, but want him to get as much time in the AHL as he can because I think he needs just a bit more. My guess is it would be Welinski, but I am not a very big fan there.
