Player Discussion: Jet Greaves

You know what would be far more interesting than a bunch of worthless tweets about a coaching search? A nice article on how the Jackets found Jet Greaves and signed him to a free agent contract. But the people who cover the Jackets are awful.

Anyway, congrats Jet! You have done very well for a six foot tall undrafted goalie who lost an entire season to COVID. Keep working hard.

If such an article is to arrive it'll be from Portzline later in the offseason. And when he does them they're pretty damn good.

Feels like it is time to re-open this thread. Was just reading AP's Sunday Gathering article. Jet was Item #1...for good reason. He just sounds like such a good kid...so easy to root for. I think the lack of drama with him (which it should be since it's still the honeymoon period) is so refreshing after four years of Elvis. Elvis is exhausting.

Anyway, the whole section on Jet was worth the read but I thought this one quote from a goalie commentator was worth sharing: “The game has become so much about East-West puck movement,” Woodley said. “Yes, you have to fill nets on open looks, but guys who track well and have patience on their (skate) edges are effective, and those are two of the things that Jet does really well."

I think that's insightful and I had not given it much thought.

Seems to me Jet has played nine games and has as many Donkeys as Elvis and Tarry combined.

I'm glad he's playing well right now since it seems to have provided some sort of spark utility honestly the rest of the team shouldn't have need this kick in the a** of desperation t make this run.

In any event, I hope he works out but I also remember Steve Mason, Korpisalo, and Elvis all had solid starts to their NHL career only to struggle once the rest of the league got a bigger opportunity to scout out weaknesses.

This is true and I completely agree it is something to watch for. But that also could have been said of every goalie that became really good...just wait until the league has enough tape on them and figure them out. You never know...until you know.

So true for so many thing in life.

But this will come to finding out what his ceiling is. As the league adapts to him, can he adapt to the league at the similar rate because he'll need to keep evolving too.

I also feel like the team is subconsciously playing harder defense for him because of his relative inexperience. As they get more comfortable they may get looser. Everyone likes shiny new toys.

Eh, they can also be playing harder because they don't have fear that every dangerous shot against will go in. That and this obviously wasn't Caps at their best but Ovi did have some prime chances tonight.

I'd also say Jet has had more time to marinate in the minors and is a more level headed individual which is an obvious benefit. His size will always be worrisome but the other traits he has to make up for that have served him well. I don't think anyone is anticipating a 60 game starter, especially right off the hop but with what we've seen, expecting a goalie that can be part of a solid tandem is not an unfair expectation

They've been giving up chance after chance to our opponents in each of the three wins. Big turnovers leaving guys alone with Jet. Like we got solidly outchanced in this game.

Greaves is following a very standard pattern for non drafted goalies who ultimately enjoy success in the NHL.

Played in juniors until he was 20. Started in the ECHL and did well enough to become an AHL goaltender.

He became a better goaltender over time in the AHL and acquitted himself satisfactorily in limited NHL duty.

He got his opening to get a real shot in the NHL after an injury (Elvis) and substandard performance of the back up (Tarasov). And he has taken full advantage of his possible career-changing opportunity.

He's earned a spot on next year's team. He's also given the team the latitude to not re up Tarasov and trade with retention or buy out Elvis. He doesn't have enough NHL experience to count on him as a #1 next season-though he's earned having a legit chance at it-but he makes the UFA acquisition process/price much better for the CBJ. While (of course) they will try to get the best available goalie, they aren't in a position of desperation. Had Greaves fallen on his face during his opportunity to be the team's go to goalie, the CBJ would have had to trade some too many valuable assets or overpay a UFA. Now they can got about business in a standard way and try to get another goalie without having an anvil hanging over their heads.

GMDW is probably sleeping much easier over next year's goalie situation than he was 2 weeks ago.

Jet is undoubtedly a cooler name than Elvis, which I’m assuming has accounted for the majority of the fanfare directed towards Merzlikins.

It couldn’t have been his actual goaltender skills, could it??
Well, the fact he’s named for Jet Li makes it even cooler!

Jet has absolutely earned the opportunity to be at least the 1B goalie next year. That said, I'm pretty confident he can grow into a full time starter at this point. Obviously he won't be as good as he has been, but he is a major improvement on the goalies we have had for the past half decade. He's consistent, he tracks the puck well, and he's a quiet competitor. His height is still a very slight concern- the over the shoulder goal scored on him in the Buffalo game happens to shorter goalies- but big goalies aren't necessarily the meta anymore.

Grab one of Allen, Andersen, Vanecek or Comrie in UFA. Maybe even Vladar. Also will need a lower level guy to replace Jet in Cleveland or be the number 3. Could even reach into the KHL for that guy. My dream for awhile now has been getting Vejmelka out of Arizona/Utah, but that ship seems to have sailed.
