Panarin's 1st three games this season have been more impressive than 95 percent of last seasons performance. He's looked great so far, and if he plays at this level all year it should translate to the playoffs. The problem was he wasn't himself most of last season, not just in the playoffs.

That is a direct result of how they chose to approach their operating/financial response to the pandemic. They could have agreed to a different solution that was more protective of future league operating conditions, but it would have required additional sacrifice or creativity on the part of the owners.
Laying out an 80 million dollar payroll with next to zero revenue seems pretty sacrificial and creative to me.

That's easy, you don't trade a 1st for Braun because he's not worth it and you can get him for way less than that. You trade firsts for players who are worth that high amount.

Go back and look at the teams that has won recently. Avs traded away their first. Tampa traded away multiple firsts. Chicago has done it. Pittsburgh did it. St. Louis. Some of these are for players with term. Some of them were rentals. Rangers don't have a recent history of trading 1sts for guys without term, but when you have 2 that makes it way more palatable and likely.

If you have a chance to win, picks should not be off limits for the right player. If you are a middling or mediocre team, then you keep them. Pretty simple.

You are omitting what makes him worth it or not: the player you are getting in return when you use the selection to draft.

8 weeks of Kane isn’t worth it either.

It is if they win. Not a guarantee by any means but if this team is good, then it would absolutely be worth it to make them even better.

Legit question here - let's say a team trade for Andew Ladd's contract, who is on IR. Do they need the space to accept the trade or could he go straight to IR?

Nobody forgets that at all, but the way the league is managing the cap increases is absurd. What Larry is proposing should've been discussed when the CBA was hammered out in 2020. Nobody had the foresight to see this was going to be a giant problem in just 2 years? Seems unlikely, when we have to watch these glitchy ads on the boards that the NHL claims have been in development for 7 years before rolling them out.

The NHL had a problem with paying 3rd liners like Bobby Holik 9M a year, 20 years ago. I understood it then, but it's been the owners mission to suppress wages since the grand lockout of 04-05. Once the players caved & agreed to the hard cap, the owners have kept them over that barrel.
Yep. everybody appreciates there is a cba. A portion of us think it’s proving to be a one-sided deal.

Wouldn’t it be grand if general manager Chris Drury could enter the deadline in a position of strength without being obligated to move either or both of his 2023 first-rounders or any of the young blue-chippers within the organization?

There are nearly five months to go until the March 3 trade deadline. Twists and turns lay ahead. But if Lafreniere and Kakko can ride the baseline they have established this week and maintain their status as productive top-six right wings, the Rangers may have no need to raise Kane.

Brooks didn’t mention the Rangers first unit PP. Why would the Rangers trade for Kane with 40 days remaining in the regular season and play him on the 2nd PP unit?

Why would Drury be obligated to make a bad trade? These guys act like Kane is the guy from 10 years ago. Multiple young assets for a 35 year old rental.

The Rangers have cap issues. It will take two trades just to get Kane if the Rangers have enough accrued space on March 3. The Rangers need a defenseman. Maybe another bottom six forward. There are still 40 days left in the season after the trade deadline.

The Rangers are still carrying 14 forwards. Nearly $29,000 came off the books this week with Hunt being on the roster in the first week of the season. Gallant said Kravtsov wouldn’t automatically go back into the lineup when he is ready to play this week. Someone else will be playing. The cap space decreases everyday. Gallant loves Hunt. Carpenter? Without Carpenter, Goodrow needs to play center on the 4th line. $3.6M on the fourth line. Drury isn't waiving Kravtsov. His trade value is non-existent.

Why wouldn’t Kakko and Lafreniere continue their play? i was watching Keyshawn Johnson discussing Jalen Hurts on ESPN a few weeks ago. Keyshawn played for Bill Pwrcells. The Tuna told him he expects the rookies to drive to practice and the games on time. He expects them to start figuring things out in the second year. Parcells expects the players to become a big part of the team in the third season. Hurts was so so his rookie. He had one huge game against Arizona. Hurts was better in his 2nd season. He still had trouble passing the ball. He was a better runner. The Eagles made the playoffs last season. In his 3rd season, Hurts has become a better all around player and a major reason why the Eagles are 6-0.

Injuries derailed Kakko last season. This is Lafreniere's 3rd season.

I just don't believe that Blackhawks management could sell their fanbase on such a poor return for a future iconic Hall-of-Famer and multiple Cup winner. Even in a rebuild they'd expect way more for Kane.
I’m pretty sure that if you can stick around after your club aids and abets a sexual predator then a poor Kane return is a walk in the park.

Suddenly no longer worried about 1RW. I think the wild card is the third line and 7D.
Exactly. We're still an injury away from Hajek starting in the playoffs, and/or Reaves playing most nights. That's not a good formula come Spring.

But it would certainly be nice to go after cheap depth at the deadline while giving up basically nothing - ala last year - versus losing legitimate assets for Patrick Kane.

Best case scenario is playing out with the Rangers thus far in terms of their forwards. Continue like this, ignore the Kane chatter, and look to acquire a defenseman to replace Hajek as the season progresses.

Health is the most important thing for the Rangers this season, crisis averted that Trouba wasnt hurt on that shot to the head.

Lafreniere is tied for 2nd on the team for even strength points amongst forwards.

5th on the team in hits.

54% CF.

Kakko's possession numbers are insane. He's currently over 61% CF.

These two are not getting enough ice time.
PK or PP? Hard to argue to put them on the PP right now as good as it is looking. I wouldn't hate Laf and Kakko being a PK team. Mika and Kreider as the other.

Kreider, Zibanejad and Panarin's CF% are all higher than LaF's.

Also, hard to argue with a one forward having 10 points, the other 8, and being 1st and 2nd in the league in scoring, respectively, and saying they should spend more time on the bench.

Laf and Kakko are 5th and 6th among Rangers forwards in ice time. That's pretty damned good.

We will one day look back on this team and be amazed at the amount of talent on it. The next 2-3 years are their best chance to win it all because they absolutely can.

How would you or others compare this squad to the 1991-92 Rangers?

That seriously was the most talented group of forwards in my lifetime. And their D was top heavy (Leetch, Patrick Beuk).

Assuming Kravstov is RW3, potential 3rd line combos: Choose

Goodrow Chytil Kravstov
Blais Chytil Kravstov
Vesey Chytil Kravstov

I feel like if you have Kravtsov on the third line, you have to put Goodrow there to balance it out. Kravtsov and Blais are probably are two worst forwards in the defensive zone. Chytil is improving but still has a lot of work to do before he can be considered solid defensively. So Blais-Chytil-Kravtsov sounds like it would bleed goals against, particularly if they are often on the ice with Jones and Schneider.

Goodrow-Chytil-Kravstov
Vesey-Carpenter-Blais

I'd love to see a Vatrano type complete that 3rd line, and have an enviable 4th line of Blais - Goody - Vesey.

If Carp or Rydahl or a depth C acquisition play well enough to push BG to the 3rd line, I'm cool with that, too.
